Re: 6.1.1 update

2013-02-13 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi,
Jailbreaking would usually mean allowing iOS users to have "fuller"
control of your device and sort of "unlocking" additional
functionality that Apple restricts. For instance, changing number of
icons in the dock, installing apps from third-party repos and so on.
In any iOS device running recent iOS versions, you're loggin onto the
device as the user "mobile," which is restricted in what you can do
with your device. To jailbreak, a developer would try to find bugs or
exploits which allows one to run code as admin of the system (this
would be termed "privilege escalation). Once the exploit has been
found, the jailbreak writer would come up with the modified firmware
and associated installation tool for devices running specific version
of iOS.
Cheers,
Joseph

I understand that if you jailbreak you have to be careful about updates, but
for those who are not jailbroken and don't plan to do so I think it's more
or less a no-brainer to decide to update. I doubt Apple would suddenly
release a minor update which breaks Voiceover and ultimately a new more
major update comes out and just about everybody on this list who has an
iPhone especially if it's a 4S or 5 will update anyways. Even if an update
fixes a specific issue which maybe I didn't even notice or if it's just a
security fix I would still go ahead and do it just as I do all my Windows
updates. In many ways iPhone owners are very lucky this way because being
able to update to the latest version of Android or Windows Phone is not even
an option for the vast majority of people who have such devices because they
are either not given the option to update or the update only works for a
small number of the latest phones.

I find it rather amusing that a new update comes out just 1 week after
6.1 is released and jailbroken. This smells of Apple trying to stay
ahead of the jailbreakers despite saying that the main reason for this
is to fix some Japan map issues. .. The same thing happened when
iOS 4.3.3 was released and jailbroken. Suddenly 4.3.4 and 4.3.5 came
out very soon after and yet they didn't really add anything other than
plugging up the unofficial jailbreak hole.

So, to answer your question, best thing to do, especially if you are not
jailbroken, is update and stay with the latest. Or, you can wait for
others to update first and report on their findings. As for me, I think
I'll be sticking with 6.1.

2013-02-12 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Raul, the Japan map enhancements aren't in this build. A build was sent to
developers last week with map enhancements, but it is being renamed. 6.11 was
rushed out for the 4S only, because of problems with 3G services which caused
some European carriers to issue warnings to customers, and suggesting they
don't update to 6.1.

Re: 6.1.1 update

2013-02-12 Thread Rob

I updated to the 6.1.1 update,
about 15 minutes later I found out that if you plan to JailBreak, you
should not upgrade.
but if jailbreaking isn't for you, then go ahead and update. it said it
fixes cellular issues with the 4S.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: 6.1.1 update

2013-02-12 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
