You would go into sounds under settings and there are groupings like ring tones 
you want to apply for a person or a certain one you like when texts come in. I 
go through the sounds and double tap on the sound and it highlights the sound 
and plays and find the "done button then back out of sounds and settings.

Once before, I lost the sounds I had chosen for text and email on my iPhone. I 
have two questions which will be quite elementary for all of you. How do I 
choose sounds for individual notifications like email or texts? If I lose them

Those should work just under the Sound settings.
Make sure the sounds are working.

Now, if you happen to have an Apple Watch, I noticed that if I had 
notifications on the watch, the phone did not play the notification sound.
So, I turned those notifications off on the watch and all is well.

If you are talking about specific sounds for people, you do that within their 
contact in the contacts app.
If you have more than one email account and wants different sounds for each 
account, go into the Notification settings and select mail.  In there, you will 
have each mail account where you can set its notification separately.

You would go into sounds under settings and there are groupings like ring tones 
you want to apply for a person or a certain one you like when texts come in. I 
go through the sounds and double tap on the sound and it highlights the sound 
and plays and find the "done button then back out of sounds and settings.

  Once before, I lost the sounds I had chosen for text and email on my iPhone.

choose sounds for individual notifications like email or texts? If I lose them 
as I have, how do I get them back? Include all steps. I am not a genius with 
technology and especially not with this phone so won't be hurt if you make the 
answer very simple. I am going to be working with a friend to improve my 
knowledge of this phone and get rid of my feeling it's something others  can
