Hi.

I experience that it has improved a lot to use digit-eyes with the new IPhone
6s Plus, I am not sure why.

Best regards Annie.

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-26 Thread Jeff Samco
QR codes are very good for labelling things of your own. I print
them onto labels and affix them to devices in an inventory I maintain
at my work. I also put them on things like the envelope containing my
year's worth of tax materials. Although I use the Digit-Eyes website
to generate the QR codes to print onto labels, I use another iPhone
app called QuarKode QR Reader because it is much easier to use.

I like Digit-Eyes the best.
The key is to place the camera against the object, start the
scanning, and slowly pull the phone
away about 4 to 8 inches. If you aren't on the bar code, you can
slowly turn the item about a

quarter of a turn and wait, or, start over.
There are lots of good tips on their web site for scanning tips.

The screen curtain has no effect on the camera unless you are trying to use the

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-26 Thread Jewel
QR, as in code, stands for quick response.
I had another go with Digit-Eyes yesterday, and still had no success.
I held the phone near the item and did get the initial single buzz telling me
that it was ready to
start work, but that was the only sound it made, so, obviously, I must be doing
something wrong.
I did realise that I had the screen curtain on [I was getting bugged by moths
of prodigious
proportions when I turned the phone on at night and drawing the curtain removed
that problem].
If it is that, it is strange that Tap Tap See is not affected, but it is still
taking photos and
having them described with no problem.

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-25 Thread Richard Turner

Hi Jewel,
I will take your word for only needing QR codes, but most commercial products
do not have QR codes but UPC codes unless I am completely misinformed.

I am not completely surprised at the number of messages I've replied to, but I
think if you look at some others, they would make that seem pretty
insignificant.

I like Digit-Eyes the best.
The key is to place the camera against the object, start the scanning, and
slowly pull the phone
away about 4 to 8 inches. If you aren't on the bar code, you can slowly turn
the item about a
quarter of a turn and wait, or, start over.
There are lots of good tips on their web site for scanning tips.

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-25 Thread Richard Turner

If you are not using the full version of Digit-Eyes, it will never gnize a UPC
code.
The lite version is only for QR codes.
If you have the full version, it works best to start the scan with the camera
against the object, and then slowly move the phone back so the auto-focus can
lock in on the object.
Hence, why it is a good idea to read the scanning tips on the digit-eyes web
site.

Dacia! You have no idea how your post, quite unintentionally I am sure on your

That reminds me, I did try to call up someone on Be MY Eyes, which I have done,

All this, really, great info leads me to the belief that the display stand that
I made and was, note
the past tense, so proud of is, * useless.
I place the item to be scanned about 10 inches, or thereabouts from the phone
which, in itself, is
standing, on its bottom edge, at the other end of the stand, thus placing the
camera lens about 6
inches [I have a 5S] above the stand.
Should I lower the camera to be able to get the label and barcode information?

I think that, if I was just to hold it in my hand, I would have the greatest
difficulty in focussing
the lens in just the right place.
If just lowering the camera while still retaining the display stand would be
enough, I think that I
could work out a method to do that. How far above the stand would the camera
need to be?

Digit-Eyes Lite allows you to read Digit-Eyes QR (Quick-Response) text bar
code labels. It can be upgraded to read UPC / EAN labels as well. You can
make and read your own labels, too! Using the Digit-Eyes website, you'll be
able to create a PDF file of Digit-Eyes QR bar codes that each contain up to
250 characters of text. These codes are useful for labeling items where the
content is not expected to change. You can create labels to identify clothing,
CDs, canning, moving boxes, important documents, appliance settings and more.
Using the printer attached to your computer, you can print the PDF of these

When you scan the Digit-Eyes Quick-Response (QR) text labels using the

In addition to reading the Digit-Eyes text labels, you'll also be able to use
the Digit-Eyes Lite application on your iPhone or iPad to read standard
Quick-Response (QR) barcode labels.
Please note that Digit-Eyes Lite does not natively read UPC / EAN codes or
barcodes that are in the code 3-of-9 format; it also does not read the voice
labels that the full version of Digit-Eyes can create. It is only set up to
read and voice Quick-Response (QR) text bar codes. You can purchase separate
upgrades that allow you to add functionality to read UPC and EAN manufacturer's
barcodes, to read code 3-of-9 barcode labels or to read code128 barcode labels.
You can also add an option to record and play Digit-Eyes audio labels of your
own.
Digit-Eyes Lite is intended to be used by people who live or work with
someone who has the full version of Digit-Eyes, but who need don't need the

to be able to scan UPC / EAN codes, but who does need to be able to understand
the contents of the Digit-Eyes text labels created and used by a spouse or

Thus, Digit-Eyes Lite is a good choice if you just want to use your iPhone or

enhancement (at least in my opinion) when the “you’re close alert” was

included. This is the feature where an audible alert is given when you’ve

managed to focus on a part of the UPC. This allows the user to concentrate

on that immediate area of the package.

Like others posting to this thread, I needed to develop the “scanning skill”

before being able to effectively use the app. And have others have stated,

the UPC on cans is usually near the label seem and towards the bottom.

It is not a "you're close" alert perse; that is just what I referred to the
sound that is made when you've done a partial focus on the UPC code.

Hi, Everyone.
I got the Digit-Eyes full version on Wednesday and absolutely love it.
A few months ago I had my husband help me identify things for our
pantry and had made Braille labels, so used the BDE (before
Digit-Eyes) labeling to help with learning to scan. I also downloaded
the podcast from Applevis where Anonymouse gives hints and tips on the
use of the full version of the app.

I manage cans better than bottles or packaged items, but then I've
only been working with the app for a day or so. As an example, I had
the three cans of chicken stacked together and simply labeled
"chicken". What I didn't know, and found out through Digit-Eyes, is
that two were Hormel and one was Chicken of the Sea. So cool.

What's the "“you’re close alert”?
Would there be a way to read the sell-by or expiration info on the packaging?
Finally, is there a way to share the bar code info with another home
organization app on the same device?

Thanks,
Dani

RE: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-25 Thread NIMAS
Jewel,

I have been using DigitEyes for a number of years. It actually works great if …
(a big if!) you can find and successfully scan the bar code. That, as they say,
is the rub. Once you have accomplished that, you will get more information
about the product in question than you probably ever wanted. How far to hold
the phone away from the product and where to scan is difficult to determine.

A few hints: If you are scanning a can or bottle with a wrap-around label, look
for the seam and scan just to the right or left of it near the bottom of the
container for the bar code. If you are looking at a box, scan the sides, not
the back or front, again toward the bottom edge. Hold the phone about 6- to
8-inches away from the object.

It takes practice and a lot of patience, but it is doable.

I downloaded digit_eyes lite, but from what I can make out, i am supposed to be
going along the shelves in a grocery store, chemist etc, having the iphone
record the barcode information as it is seen: mind you, I haven't been able to
make it give the smallest squeak yet!
Once it has noted the barcode information of all the products I have shown it,
I can attach audio labels to those products and make a list of what I am
interested in.
I set up a bottle of gingerale on my display stand for it to identify, but no
such luck! All it said was "scanning ... scanning ... scanning. The 3 dots
represent the loud click the phone gave between each announcement that it was
scanning.
It seemed to be, completely, blind to the fact that it had a bottle of
gingerale standing in front of it.
Well digit-eyes lite or heavy seemed to me to be out, so replacing my bottle of
gingerale with a can of paint, I let my trusty Tap Tap See loose on it, and was
told that it was apurple and red can. Well the purple and red was additional
information but that of it being a can was nothing new because a can I knew it
to be.
Moving on to Camfind.
In the beginning, as TTS had done, I was told that it was a can, but the
colours were a lot more fancy: cherry, strawberry and maybe something else
fruit-related. No, there wasn't a bowl of cherries anywhere, in case you are
asking.
Then, without my appearing to do anything, I seemed to be hurled, into the
world of vehicle and personal accident insurance. Where in the wide world that
came from, I haven't the foggiest.
I was told that I could get Tap Tap See to read a label, but I haven't found
the trick of getting it to do that.
Speaking of Tap Tap See, by far my favourite photo recognition app, so far, I
took a photo in my kitchen cum sitting-room last night and got back a
description containing 6 separate details: Detail #1: "medium-sized dog" #2:
black short-haired coat" #3: "Lying on brown *fur carpet" #4: "in front of
cupboard" #5: beside black steel wood burner" #6: "in the house!" Not bad:
 huh!
I put an asterix beside fur as my home help has passed remarks on the amount of
hair that Guideon deposits on the carpet and the evidence of the contents of
the vacuum cleaner bag prove that she is not telling porkies, but have TTS
describe it as a *fur carpet was, I thought, just a bit rich.

• Read standard inventory tags in code 39 or code 128 format. This is
how Michael knows which printer is which at work and how Ben does the shelf
stocking in his store.
• Print labels directly from your iPhone on your Bluetooth-connected
printer;
• Create and read QR vCard format business card information and add the
content to your contacts. This is how Digital Miracles gets information from
customers at conferences and how we share our own contact information;
• Create lists of code that you've scanned; edit them, type additional
information and share them with others. This is how Robbie notes what items
are getting used up and tells Gary what to buy at the store;
• Use Digit-Eyes with any blue-tooth connected laser scanner, integrated
as a single unit. This is how John is able to work at a grocery store reading
the shelf tags to find where to stock the product.
Use of the free Digit-Eyes website comes with the product. The website

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-25 Thread Andrew J. LaPointe
Hi, it takes some practice to get Digit eyes to work the way you want. I
had the app for almost 2 years before I felt good about using it. When you
scan a can, try to scan where the code is located, usually on the bottom and
runs along close to the seam of the label. When Digit eyes detects the code,
you will hear a fast triple beep, at that point, you want to scan around that
area. Also, make sure you have internet connection. It really is a very good
app.
Also, if you have sighted help, you may want to put a piece of clear tape over
the code, this makes it easy to find and concentrate there with the scanning
process. Andy and Shubert

As far as I know yes.
When I bought the app, it was $19.99, so they have dropped the price.
Enjoy,

Hi Richard,
So I went to the site and read about the app. I take it then all you need to do
is pay the $9.95 and you can then scan items from the grocery store and the app
will tell you what they are. Also for that price can you go to the web site and
make your own labels?

Re: Bar Code Reader App??

2016-03-22 Thread Richard Turner

i replied before I really read through your message.
Digit-Eyes has millions of commercial bar codes in its database.
Having said that, some smaller brands are not there.
But yes, you can create your own, but it is very useful with many products. On
their web site with the scanning tips they explain how to find bar codes more
efficiently.
But, the iPhone camera is not really designed for bar code scanning, so it is
slower than a dedicated bar code scanner.
Since the Envision America ID Mate costs about $1300, taking a little longer to
identify a bar code is just fine with me.

Richard

It will always be hard because the iPhone camera can only see straight
ahead. The advantage of the dedicated blindness oriented product is that it
has an omnidirectional camera that actively scans around for the bar code.

I like Digit-Eyes the best.
The key is to place the camera against the object, start the scanning, and
slowly pull the phone away about 4 to 8 inches. If you aren't on the bar code,
you can slowly turn the item about a quarter of a turn and wait, or, start over.
There are lots of good tips on their web site for scanning tips.
