Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Maria,

I don't know where you are, but here in France, Red Laser is next to useless. I
can find bar codes but they don't appear to be in any of its databases.
Digit-Eyes, on the other hand, is great.

The button to scan in Red Laser appears to be labelled Bolt.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-23 Thread Traci
Hi,

I'm in the US and for me, red laser works great. True, it is very helpful to
have a general idea where the barcode is on the product you are scanning.

On the red laser app, there are 5 buttons along the bottom. The button in the
middle, almost just above the home button is scan. When the app scans the
barcode, you'll hear a beep, then you can flick your finger like normal to read
your results.

Another app, I use sometimes is Consmr. Yes, that is how it is spelled, :).
It also has a scan button just above home.

Lately, I've been using fooducate, it has a barcode scanner as well. It tells
you the product and all the nutrition info.

HTH,
Traci

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-23 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hello Anne.

I have found another app, that works great especially if you use your standscan
pro. It works also quite good without standscan pro.

Best barcode scanner from simpleact inc. It searches for the barcodes on google.

Readlaser is also a great app, but you are right it is not having many barcodes
here in Denmark too, but it does have some barcodes.

Digit-eyes is in my opinion to difficult to use, you will have to know exactly
where the barcode is located, that is not the case with the two other apps.

Again both redlaser and best barcode scanner (qr code) works like a dream with
standscan pro, that is not the case with digit-eyes.

Cheers Annie.

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-23 Thread Esther
Hello Anne, Annie, Traci and Others,

In general, camera apps and scanner apps use a button just above the
Home button at the bottom of the screen. As Anne described, this
button on the RedLaser app is labeled "Bolt". Anne, the U.S.-centric
only product databases of the RedLaser app date primarily from when
eBay bought the RedLaser barcode scanning app from the original
developers, Occipital. Up until that time, you had more options to
search with barcode scan results, including using your local Google or
other search engine. For a while, two versions of the app were kept
available: RedLaser and RedLaser Classic. The RedLaser Classic version
was a continuation of the original app as Occipital implemented it. I
have this version, and stopped updating it, so I can still use the
orginal app version separately. However, as of January 2013, the last
update for RedLaser Classic puts up constant "nag" messages to
"update" to the RedLaser app that eBay owns. If you read the app
reviews, anyone who updated to that version lost all the general
barcode scanning capability that was not tied to the eBay databases.
There's no alternative current RedLaser version that is useful for
people outside the U.S. and Canada, but if you happen to have one of
the old versions of the RedLaser Classic app you can use that. Or you
can try Annie's suggestion of Best Barcode Scanner - Scan QR Code by
SimpleAct, Inc., which does seem to be very fast.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-23 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hello.

I forgot to mention an important detail.

If you use the qr code app I mentioned together with standscan pro, you will
sometimes need to lift the item you are scanning a little. I tried about 20
apps, next after redlaser it is the best app I found.

Sometimes I use redlaser and copy the code, it can not find, and search on
google.

We miss a good app that is just as good as redlaser, and has as many barcodes
as digit-eyes.

Cheers Annie.

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-24 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Annie,

I too got this app this morning after reading of your success. Here in
Ireland we are challenged re databases and barcodes. I find this "Best Barcode
Scanner" to be fast and much more flexible as to sourcing databases. Plus, with
one of my scans, I found one of the sources to be "DigitEyes" so, maybe, this
will also give us access to their database?

Being lazy, I haven't found my way to lists of ingredients etc, but imagine
if I were to tap on the proffered home page for the product such info would be
available. I have a friend, in Australia, who has specific dietary needs and,
for her, it is essential to know what, precisely, is in the product, so this
one might just do that.

Any hints as to how to get to such info quickly would be much apreciated.

Sandy.

We are adding barcode reading to Talking Goggles as well. But Talking

recognizing their image or by reading the description on the package with

Re: Barcode apps, please help.

2013-04-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Martijn,

First let me say what a fantastic app Talking Goggles is.

I e-mailed one of your colleagues about localising Talking Goggles into other
languages but I haven't had any response.

I have a discussion list for French-speaking visually-impaired users of Apple
products and many of them are rather put off by labels in English only. There
are also many on this list who are not native English speakers and who might
know of other visually-impaired friends who do not cope well with English but
who would appreciate being able to use Talking Goggles in their own language.

Cheers,

Anne
