The iPhone has a built in GPS receiver. Your iPhone 5 with 32 GB storage is what I have, and should be just fine. It works primarily by receiving GPS satellite data. It uses cellular tower triangulation as supplemental to enhance location information. The iPhone performs these calculations and then presents the GPS coordinates to the GPS location app which is being utilised. It must be noted that cellular tower triangulation is not very accurate. Neither, for that matter, is GPS satellite triangulation unless several satellite signals are received. I also think it uses a bit of wifi triangulation as well. When you turn off wifi, you'll see that you get a message about location data may not be as accurate.
