It works primarily by receiving GPS satellite data. It uses cellular tower 
triangulation as supplemental to enhance location information. The iPhone 
performs these calculations and then presents the GPS coordinates to the GPS 
location app which is being utilised. It must be noted that cellular tower 
triangulation is not very accurate. Neither, for that matter, is GPS satellite 
triangulation unless several satellite signals are received.
