RE: Microphone

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
The question has not been asked, and I did not see it in the original post,
what kind of recording is the microphone going to be used for?

The Zoom IQ microphones are stereo and fairly small and work best on a phone
without a case, or at least a case that leaves the charging port completely
open since the post on the mic for the lightning plug is very short, even after
removing the little plastic spacer they include.

The Line 6 looks like an over the top system focused completely on music and
more. Check their web site for a warning about the wireless system that needs
a firmware update.

I think the Shure Mv5 Digital condenser microphone is a unidirectional
microphone that would be great for recording either spoken word or a person
playing an instrument or singing.

If we are talking just spoken word, the built in microphone or microphones,
depending on the iPhone, do a fine job though an external mic does improve
things.

RE: Microphone

2021-04-30 Thread Richard Turner
Well, if the Zoom IQ 7 is still available, it is a very good microphone,
however, you have to plug an earphone into the microphone's 3.5 MM jack to hear
VoiceOver, and Bluetooth earphones do not work while using the microphone.

I'm curious about the Shure MD5 microphone that was mentioned, I wonder if the
same thing happens that you cannot hear voiceover when it is plugged in since
it is plugging into the Lightning port.
The app is accessible, but you have to switch from the record screen back to
the library screen to hear your recording.
Of course, you should be able to use the app of your choice.
Here is a link to their page about the Shure Mic:
https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones/mv5

RE: Microphone for stereo recording

2015-02-01 Thread Neal Ewers
No. Well, I don’t think so. You may be able to figure out a connecter and it’s
possible the computer will power it, but it is designed to plug into the USB
jack on the iDevice. There was a message or two about this last week on this
list. There is also the Zoom IQ5, designed to do the same thing. Perhaps
someone knows of a microphone that is stereo that will work on both the iDevice
and a computer.

2015-02-01 Thread Richard Turner
Be aware that the IQ microphones from Zoom do not work if you have a case on
your phone that doesn't leave the bottom open. It will not work, for example
with the Otterbox defender case. You would have to remove the case when you
wanted to record.
I got this directly from Zoom support.
However, if you either don't have a case, or are willing to remove your case,
it sounds like their microphones do an excellent job at about $100.

Do you know why this is so? Is it due to the plug not being able to insert
completely? If so, would an extender possibly help? Curious if there may be
another reason. Thanks. Keith

Richard, the IQ6 claims to come with a piece that makes it possible to be used
with a case. Here is the snip from the description.

“Removable Spacer Allows Use with Cases.”

I don’t know if this works on the IQ5, but I am thinking it would. I would

No. You will need to use a less hefty case. The ones where the bottoms are more

No. You will need to use a less hefty case. The ones where the bottoms are more

Hi, I’m checking with Sweetwater to see what they say about this. It is not
listed that way on their site, but it is on the B&H site. I’m also guessing the
case would have to be quite thin.

RE: Microphone to record stereo

2015-02-02 Thread Neal Ewers
Here is a snip from the Zoom site. It does talk about the spacer.

Begin Snip.

X/Y Stereo for Versatility and Realism

The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones in an
X/Y configuration—the same ones used in our world-famous H4n Handy Recorder.
X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while still capturing
sound sources in the center with clarity and definition. You can even change
the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused image to 120 degrees for
immersive wide-angle stereo. (US Patent 8184815)

Microphone In, Headphone Out

The iQ6's large analog-type MIC GAIN wheel and three-segment level LEDs ensure
that you'll always get great audio in every environment — from quiet meetings
to loud concerts— with crystal clarity and no signal overload. The iQ6's
dedicated headphone jack —which doubles as a line output— enables direct
monitoring during both recording and playback.

Extended Connector, Removable Spacer

The iQ6 comes with an extended Lightning connector and removable spacer that
allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad and iPod cases. Simply plug your
iQ6 in and start making great-sounding stereo recordings!

* Some cases might prevent connection even when the case adjuster is removed.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App Store,
provides a wealth of tools for your iQ6 and iOS device. In addition to offering
onscreen level metering, it enables you to set the iQ6 headphone volume, as
well as adding an automatic recording function—handy for capturing the sound of
meetings, speeches, and other situations where you don't want to miss a thing.
Choose linear PCM format for the highest quality sound or AAC format to
conserve storage space, then apply compression, EQ and reverb effects to your
recordings. Handy Recorder even allows you to email your files to friends and
to upload them to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

End snip.

I have also read that the microphone will work with other apps as well. I don’t
believe the HandiRec app will export to DropBox, but I may be wrong about this.
I have lately fallen in love with AudioMemos, but I also have a number of other
recording apps as well.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App Store,
provides a wealth of tools for your iQ6 and iOS device. In addition to
offering onscreen level metering, it enables you to set the iQ6
headphone volume, as well as adding an automatic recording
function—handy for capturing the sound of meetings, speeches, and other
situations where you don't want to miss a thing. Choose linear PCM
format for the highest quality sound or AAC format to conserve storage
space, then apply compression, EQ and reverb effects to your recordings.
Handy Recorder even allows you to email your files to friends and to
upload them to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

End snip.

I have also read that the microphone will work with other apps as well.
I don’t believe the HandiRec app will export to DropBox, but I may be
wrong about this. I have lately fallen in love with AudioMemos, but I
also have a number of other recording apps as well.

Fanus. There is an app made specificly for the microphone it is called
HandiRec. However, if the controls on the microphone allow you to do the
adjustment from the microphone, you can likely use any app you already
have. I won’t know this until mine comes. I’m checking on the spacer
that was talked about for making it work with cases. B&h are the only
people who talk about this, and Sweetwater seems not to know about it.
So, I don’t know if it is something B&H makes or if it comes with the
Microphone. I think I will call B&H and find out.

Neal,
If you get to talk to anyone at Zoom, I'd be very interested to know what they
say.
It is odd that they would post something on their web site that their support

Thanks,

Then why should we have this list for asking questions on products.

Then why then don't we just Google everything and that would save the

Begin Snip.

X/Y Stereo for Versatility and Realism

The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser microphones
in an X/Y configuration—the same ones used in our world-famous H4n Handy
Recorder. X/Y stereo recording is a great way to cover a wide area while
still capturing sound sources in the center with clarity and definition.
You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly focused
image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US Patent
8184815)

Microphone In, Headphone Out

The iQ6's large analog-type MIC GAIN wheel and three-segment level LEDs
ensure that you'll always get great audio in every environment — from
quiet meetings to loud concerts— with crystal clarity and no signal
overload. The iQ6's dedicated headphone jack —which doubles as a line
output— enables direct monitoring during both recording and playback.

Extended Connector, Removable Spacer

The iQ6 comes with an extended Lightning connector and removable spacer
that allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad and iPod cases. Simply
plug your iQ6 in and start making great-sounding stereo recordings!

* Some cases might prevent connection even when the case adjuster is
removed.

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App Store,

RE: Microphone to record stereo

2015-02-02 Thread Neal Ewers
Actually, I mentioned two different places that had it later in this very
thread. Yes, I could have given their web sites had I had them at my
fingertips, but I get around 300 messages a day and didn't have the time. Sorry
about that. I figured since I did mention the two sites that it would be just
as easy for someone to find the links as it would be for me to look them up for
you. So, considering that many on this list are very busy and yet willingly
offer such time as we have, the information we provide may need further
investigation by the person who is wanting the information.

Sweetwater and B&H photo are the places mentioned below. I'm happy if that
keeps you from having to read to the end of the thread to find them.

Re: Microphone to record stereo

2015-02-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I can understand where a message like try Googling for it or it's in the
manual can be kind of put offing, but sometimes that is the best answer.
People on lists are going to answer questions based on what they know.
For example, when people ask how much something costs, people are going
to know what they've paid for it, which may not be the same as what you
can get it for now. When people ask for where to go to get a list of
bluetooth keyboard commands for VoiceOver, I just Google it myself and
paste the link into my message. There's no reason the person asking the
question couldn't perform the same search I did, and they'd get the
answer a lot quicker. I'm not saing people shouldn't ask questions, and
people definitely shouldn't be dismissive, but I don't think pointing to
Google, AppleVis.com or other sources isn't a good answer.

Then why should we have this list for asking questions on products.
Or whatever is asked doubt on it.
Then why then don't we just Google everything and that would save the list mods
A hole lot of work.
You know if you are going to tell people to just Google it then why reply I
know I can do that but I guess we are not supposed to ask questions on the list
about anything.

Here is a snip from the Zoom site. It does talk about the spacer.

Begin Snip.

X/Y Stereo for Versatility and Realism

The iQ6 features two high quality unidirectional condenser
microphones in an X/Y configuration the same ones used in our
world-famous H4n Handy Recorder. X/Y stereo recording is a great way
to cover a wide area while still capturing sound sources in the center with
clarity and definition.
You can even change the mic angle from 90 degrees for a tightly
focused image to 120 degrees for immersive wide-angle stereo. (US
Patent
8184815)

Microphone In, Headphone Out

The iQ6's large analog-type MIC GAIN wheel and three-segment level
LEDs ensure that you'll always get great audio in every environment
from quiet meetings to loud concerts with crystal clarity and no
signal overload. The iQ6's dedicated headphone jack which doubles
as a line output enables direct monitoring during both recording and playback.

Extended Connector, Removable Spacer

The iQ6 comes with an extended Lightning connector and removable
spacer that allows it to be used with most iPhone, iPad and iPod
cases. Simply plug your iQ6 in and start making great-sounding stereo
recordings!

* Some cases might prevent connection even when the case adjuster is
removed.

The Zoom Handy Recorder App

Zoom's Handy Recorder app, available for free from the iTunes App
Store, provides a wealth of tools for your iQ6 and iOS device. In
addition to offering onscreen level metering, it enables you to set
the iQ6 headphone volume, as well as adding an automatic recording
function handy for capturing the sound of meetings, speeches, and
other situations where you don't want to miss a thing. Choose linear
PCM format for the highest quality sound or AAC format to conserve
storage space, then apply compression, EQ and reverb effects to your recordings.
Handy Recorder even allows you to email your files to friends and to
upload them to SoundCloud for sharing with the world.

End snip.

I have also read that the microphone will work with other apps as well.
I don t believe the HandiRec app will export to DropBox, but I may
be wrong about this. I have lately fallen in love with AudioMemos,
but I also have a number of other recording apps as well.

I found one called bluetooth loud
sspeaker.
It works with
VoiceOver.
After connecting to your bluetooth speaker, in the app, you will want to select
play on.
Then, the mic will go over the
speaker.
It has a $1.99 inapp purchase to what it says is unlock, which I think may be
to remove adst. It works at least in my quick test without that, but if it does
get rid of the ads, it will clean up the screen quite a
bit.

I found this, easy to use, free, accessible, app for recording mp3 and sharing
by email or you can backup to Dropbox.
I've pasted the name, link and description below. Your Apple Earbuds microphone
would work for chatting. Though for classrooms you may want a better
microphone. I'll test this app with the Zoom IQ 6 later.

You are welcome. And, for $1.99 you can get rid of the ads.
If the app proves to meet your needs, I'd recommend paying to get rid of the
ads as it will be even easier to use.
