Re: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kawal,

SayText doesn't work for me with the StandScan Pro, but Prizmo and Perfect OCR
both do. The StandScan keeps the phone at a fixed position which does not seem
to suit SayText.

In any case, I've never found SayText to be much good. Prizmo is definitely the
best and fastest for me. PerFect OCR is pretty good, too, but takes much longer
to do the OCR. I've never tried Text Detective which also has a good reputation.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-11 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,

I have only tried the StandScan with Prizmo and SayText. Prizmo is fine
with it, but SayText doesn't work with it at all, as far as I can tell. This is
because Prizmo is designed to take the shot at any height and work with the
image, whereas, SayText needs to take tyhe shot from a greater distance in
order to see the edges of the paper. The stand is not high enough for SayText
to see the edges of a piece of A4, I suppose it might work with something
smaller, but there would still be an issue re contrast because the StandScan is
white, so no contrast with a sheet of paper.

HTH Sandy.

Hi Fanus,

You are correct, North America has 2 flat prongs and from
how you describe
it your 2-round prong configuration sounds just like what I
am used to from
growing up in Germany. However, I just did a Google search
for What power
plugs are used in South Africa and I found the following
website:

http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity.htm

This website describes 14 different plug configurations
(from type A through
type N) which are used around the world. According to this,
Type M is most
widely used in South Africa and while it sounds similar to
Type E and Type F
which are the German standards, I believe it is different.
But I am sure you
can find an adapter or maybe the Standscan comes with some
adapters. I once
bought a Skype desktop telephone from a company called Ipevo
and it came
with about 6 different adapters. It is completely
incomprehensible to me why
there isn't more standardization. I guess it wouldn't be an
easy thing to
change something like that, but I'm sure it could be done
over time.
Of course we all know that the German Type F SchuKo plug
is the best
because, well... it's German *smile*

RE: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Annie,

It does specifically mention Compatible with iPhone 5 on their website.

Anyhow, this will work with any iPhone or mobile phone with a rear facing
camera since all it really is is a fold-out open box where you lay your
phone on the top so the camera lens is pointing straight down through a
hole. The hole is situated so that anything you put underneath is perfectly
lined up. I don't have my Standscan yet, but I believe Sandy mentioned that
she had her husband glue something on the box which gave her an edge to put
the phone up against just so she wouldn't have to make sure the lens was
really pointing through the hole every time.

RE: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-10 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Sieghard,

I've travelled quite a bit in countries that use 220-240 volts because of my
competitions and, even though my shaver told me it was safe on both, in two
occasions, after coming back from these countries, the battery in my shaver
was damaged to the point that it would only hold a charge for about 15
minutes. The first time, I thought it was just a coincidence so I didn't
pay attention but the second time, the battery was not even a year old. Now
that I have a shaver with a Lithium-Ion battery, I suspect everything would
be OK but, I still have trouble trusting the devices that switch over
automatically. I have a travelling iron that you switch over manually with
a switch and I have had no damage on that. Of course, it doesn't have a
battery. I will still continue to bring my converter. The last time, I
used it for my Victor Stream and everything was perfect.
With the StandScan, I would still check with the distributer to make sure
the converter does both. Its just a question of sending an e-mail.

Hi Fanus and Ron,

I think you should either inquire from the Standscan people or simply wait
until you get it, but if they are selling this thing worldwide I somehow
can't see that they don't at least make sure the adapter can handle both
110/120 and 220/240 Volts. As for your experience, Ron, I am not sure how
long ago this was and how old your devices are, but I have never had a
shaver in the last 10 years where I couldn't use the charger anywhere in the
world (with the appropriate adapter, of course), but no converter was
necessary. The same goes for the USB wall charger of the iPhone and pretty
much all laptop chargers, they nowadays all can handle both 110 at 60 Hertz
and 220 at 50 Hertz.

Hi Fanus,

I have been to South Africa but I can't remember which adaptor I used. Of
course, you will need a converter as well as the adaptor because, in North
America we use 110-120 volts at 60 cycles and South Africa is 220 volts at,
I believe, 50 cycles. Before leaving here, I purchased a 220 to 110 volt
converter and it came with 4 or 5 adaptors. One of them definitely fits. I
believe its 3 prong. I think 2 round and a flat but I'm not absolutely
sure. A set of adaptors is very inexpensive and available anywhere. My
adaptors were, from European 2 round prongs to everything else. If you need
a converter only for basic appliances, you don't need to purchase the
converter for electronics such as a computer. A simple converter for
something like a shaver will work and is not very expensive at all.

Hi Fanus,

You are correct, North America has 2 flat prongs and from how you describe
it your 2-round prong configuration sounds just like what I am used to from
growing up in Germany. However, I just did a Google search for What power
plugs are used in South Africa and I found the following website:

http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity.htm

This website describes 14 different plug configurations (from type A through
type N) which are used around the world. According to this, Type M is most
widely used in South Africa and while it sounds similar to Type E and Type F
which are the German standards, I believe it is different. But I am sure you
can find an adapter or maybe the Standscan comes with some adapters. I once
bought a Skype desktop telephone from a company called Ipevo and it came
with about 6 different adapters. It is completely incomprehensible to me why
there isn't more standardization. I guess it wouldn't be an easy thing to
change something like that, but I'm sure it could be done over time.
Of course we all know that the German Type F SchuKo plug is the best
because, well... it's German *smile*

Hi to all you would be scanners!

The stanndscann pro comes with a plug transformer and this works for both the
uk and the us, so I imagine it will be fine for most, if not all, countries.
The transformer plug has two round pins and so you may need to use an adaptor
to suit your country's setup.

Hello Chris,

This is a stand with a LED light in the pro version, and it can be used with
any smart phone, and software has nothing to do with it. You can even take a
picture of a hard copy picture if you want.

So can any software work with the Stan Scan be it Saytext or Prismo? I'm
going to look at one before I get it as I've never been able to scan using
my I phone and do not want to waste my money before I buy it.

Thanks again for all your help with this.

Re: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Sandy,

My StandScan Pro came with the battery holder as part of the StandScan. It
wasn't an add on. I agree that the lighting must be better with the 12 V mains
connected.

Cheers,

Anne

On 8 Mar 2013, at 12:04, Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote:

 Bonjour Anne,

I see you got the StandScan pro! I have it too and think it very good. I
would just like to add one comment to your findings: it would appear, from
your two nearly excellent scans, that there is little to choose between the 9
volt and 12 volt options, however, this is only true when there is reasonable
ambient lighting. Something I have been looking for, and think to have found
with the StandScan Pro, is a way of making sure that: 1. The phone is always
in the perfect position and 2. that the lighting within the box is perfect
regardless of other conditions. I have found that 12 volts of power is
necessary to obtain perfect/near perfect results even in complete darkness!
When the ambient light is good enough, one doesn't even need to use the LED
lights included in the StandScan box, but, especially, for those of us who
have no light perception, and are unable to avoid creating shadows etc, the
StandScan plus 12 volts of light, is capable of fulfilling these 2
 requirements.

By the way, did you buy the 12 volt battery holder, by any chance? I
thought I did, but it seems I didn't. If I can find it on their website, I
will try and order it, because I don't always want to rely upon a mains
 connection.

Also, for those who are interested in these more abstruse points, your
scans were double page scans taken from a book, something to be aimed for,
but in general, single page scans are, as in the case of a letter in the
post, the most important challenge re access and independence. So, just an
observation from here: the other day a friend came round, all het up, with a
letter from a solicitor. My friend read it to me and wanted my reaction to
it. He was distressed and kept reading me the text, all in a rush,
interjecting expletives in lieu of commas! In the end I said I'll just make
a copy of this and read it again when I can concentrate properly. I did this
using the StandScan Pro, I got a perfect scan and was able to find the word
or in a significant sentence which made all the difference! So, an example
of the need to have absolutely perfect scans sometimes.

I am certainly glad to have this scanning aid and would recommend it to
anyone, regardless of their free-hand scanning skills. I think it will work
both for those of us who have developed a facility with the various scanning
apps and those who have had absolutely no success at all! But I would
definitely recommend the use of 12 volts for relyable results in all
 situations!

Onwards and upwards! Sandy.

RE: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-09 Thread Ron Pelletier

Re: Prizmo with StandScan Pro

2013-03-08 Thread Sandratomkins
Bonjour Anne,

I see you got the StandScan pro! I have it too and think it very good. I
would just like to add one comment to your findings: it would appear, from your
two nearly excellent scans, that there is little to choose between the 9 volt
and 12 volt options, however, this is only true when there is reasonable
ambient lighting. Something I have been looking for, and think to have found
with the StandScan Pro, is a way of making sure that: 1. The phone is always in
the perfect position and 2. that the lighting within the box is perfect
regardless of other conditions. I have found that 12 volts of power is
necessary to obtain perfect/near perfect results even in complete darkness!
When the ambient light is good enough, one doesn't even need to use the LED
lights included in the StandScan box, but, especially, for those of us who have
no light perception, and are unable to avoid creating shadows etc, the
StandScan plus 12 volts of light, is capable of fulfilling these 2 requirements.

By the way, did you buy the 12 volt battery holder, by any chance? I
thought I did, but it seems I didn't. If I can find it on their website, I will
try and order it, because I don't always want to rely upon a mains connection.

Also, for those who are interested in these more abstruse points, your
scans were double page scans taken from a book, something to be aimed for, but
in general, single page scans are, as in the case of a letter in the post, the
most important challenge re access and independence. So, just an observation
from here: the other day a friend came round, all het up, with a letter from a
solicitor. My friend read it to me and wanted my reaction to it. He was
distressed and kept reading me the text, all in a rush, interjecting expletives
in lieu of commas! In the end I said I'll just make a copy of this and read it
again when I can concentrate properly. I did this using the StandScan Pro, I
got a perfect scan and was able to find the word or in a significant sentence
which made all the difference! So, an example of the need to have absolutely
perfect scans sometimes.

I am certainly glad to have this scanning aid and would recommend it to
anyone, regardless of their free-hand scanning skills. I think it will work
both for those of us who have developed a facility with the various scanning
apps and those who have had absolutely no success at all! But I would
definitely recommend the use of 12 volts for relyable results in all situations!

Onwards and upwards! Sandy.

testing 0~ a stationary bike using the same oxygen consumption after adapting
to the Inuit diet compared to their test on a high carb diet[23], leaving
little room for metabolic inefficiency in this group of subjects.
But this argument over the mechanism of weight loss is an acaderoic
straw.man, In study after study, over the first 3-6 months, people r~a
 ClinicaIUse°fCarb°hydrateRestricti°n: VeryL°wCal°rieandLowCarbohydrateDiets
donaized to a low carb diet eaten to satiety lose more Weight and more body
fat than those assigned to a low fat, calorie restricted diet. A credible
mechanism to explain this is not hard to find - carbohydrates in our diet may
offer a short-term sense of increased energy, but they offer little in the
 way of functional satiety.
~e best example of this effect was reported by Dr. Guenther Boden[45] in an
inpatient study of obese type-2 diabetics. After a week of eating a balanced
diet to satiety, the subjects were given a low carbohydrate diet consisting
of most of the same foods, with the exception that they were asked to limit
their total daily carbohydrate intake to 20 grams. Over the next two weeks,
their spontaneous nutrient intakes were carefully measured. Interestingly,
the subject's average daily energy intake dropped from 3100 to 2100 Calories,
and this was all due to the 'missing' carbs.
Despite having the choice to eat more, the protein and fat intakes of these
subjects remained relatively constant. And despite this 1000 Calorie per day
deficit, their reported hunger, satisfaction, and energy levels did not
change appreciably. What did change was their diabetes control - dramatically
for the better. For more on this topic, see Chapter 15.
But this study was just 2 weeks long. What happens in the longer term? Well,
the process of full metabolic adaptation to a low carbohydrate diet takes up
to 6 weeks, so for the first few months, we would expect wellbeing and
function to get better. But after many months and a major degree of weight
loss, it is a normal response of the human body to try to limit its losses.
This is typically achieved by eating more, but what? If dietary carbohydrate
intolerance led to the choice of a low carbohydrate diet at the outset, why
lift that restriction? In particular, why add back calories that promote fat
storage but do not provide functional satiety? Accepting that protein is good
for us only in moderation, the answer is fat (see Chapters 2 and 16). How
much fat should you add as you approach Weight
