Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
They felt like spam to me to, so deleted them all. All the flap cos someone gave us a clue what they were about, on list. That's the only one I found interesting. One message advertising the TT list would have been plenty. But like we also keep seeing, time to put this to bed for once and for all. Just delete everything else in this thread from here on. There are several companies I have learned about because of these types of posts. Why should we, as blind people, be left out of the advertising process? I have received enough information from the little bit of information the count down provided to decide if I wanted to read further or not. I think the "advertising" has given me additional information about the company and I appreciate it. Please keep sending these emails. Excellent post which reflects my feelings on this. I certainly don't intend to ridicule anyone's hard work and don't mind these messages being posted here but as you say, just a little more info would attract more people for the right reasons. Best Regards, Rick alfaro On 1/26/2014 6:32 PM, Alex Hall wrote: I don’t think anyone here is trying to put down the work you guys have done, and yes, website traffic is the goal of most blogs and similar services. This: Check out Sendero GPS, number 6 on our Top Ten Apps! With Sendero GPS, you can plan routes, explore distant locations, discover nearby points of interest, figure out where you are, and so much more! Check out our review: [url] makes me really want to know more, because that sounds like a great app and I want to know what else you have to say about it. To be very clear: I have no problem whatsoever with you guys posting these app picks here, and I even welcome it as it lets newer list members in on some possibly useful tools for them to go try. However, when is the last time you clicked a link because someone basically said “click this link”? I never do, and I’m sure most people don’t, because I have absolutely no idea what the link goes to and if it is worth it. Giving us just a one-sentence summary of the app, and the app’s name, provides that missing information and will, it seems to me, make people more likely to click through to the website. Maybe I’m off base here, but those are my opinions. Again, I’m more than fine with you guys posting content like this, and would suggest doing it more than once a year, but you may want to look at how you are trying to draw people in. If I am not mistaken this is what is done every day on the Internet, and because our list is talking about iOS apps I thought that there would be some people on this list that might enjoy reading our posts. Let me clue everyone into how this list has developed. Each one of our team members picked one of the apps in the list and then wrote up a post about that app. This way we were assured of having very different styles of writing which in my opinion would make for some interesting reading. I believe that we have accomplished this. When you make the statement that this list has a drum role feel to it you hit the nail right on the head. This is the whole point of any kind of a countdown. Finally, everyone on this list or any other list in which people post blog snip its in order to get people to go to their websites have the right not to click that link or to just delete the post, however, I do not think that it is fair for those of us who are working very hard on trying to create content that hopefully the community will like, should be ridiculed for just trying to get noticed. I have said my peace on this and I would hope that others on this list will not hold my words against me if I have said anything in this message to offend them. I'm sorry to say that I also find this practice very annoying. I get this in their email messages as well and I never follow the links and I'll probably be unsubscribing from that email list because of this. I understand the intent is to drive up the hit counters for the web site and that is their choice but I feel if one has info to offer, just do it without making people plow through a bunch of advertising. Hello. I'd like to echo what Cara has so elegantly stated below. Also, I have given the members of Fedora Outlier permission to post on list regarding the apps in question. To be blunt, if it's something you don't like or agree with, either delete it, or write them privately. Again, if it's something which you feel has crossed the list policy line, please please write me and/or Cara privately, forward the message, ETC. We will deal with it, or tell you it's approved, or tell you it's not. In either case, it helps keep list traffic down. Thanks much., -- Raul A. Gallegos Perfect has 7 letters and so does Sheldon. I never do, and I’m sure most people don’t, because I have absolutely no idea what the link goes to and if it is worth it. Hi Scott. Thanks for this. Alex said it better than ai. It will be nice to know a little bit about what one can expect when they go to a link. Come on people! They are trying only to get attention!!! This is called suspense! I agree that they should mention app name in message, but we could have said a little nicely... They are only trying to help us... After all, whats the delete key for? I really like these reviews and the only thing i ask is the app name be put so people know what they are clicking. Was i not nice? Well, apologies, not towards anyone! Let's all smile haha! Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
I think these articles are informative and provide reviews of apps people might find useful. I haven't checked, but I don't think all of the apps cost money. I don't see these posts as being advertisements for any product or service. I think they're just pointers to interesting articles and a web site worth checking out, and in that way, they're no different than any other on topic posts to this list. I don't have a problem with these posts, and I don't see them as off topic. If anyone does, you might want to contact the list owner or moderator to get them to weigh in on this. Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
As I said, I don't have a problem with these messages. It's clear that this app they're talking about is a GPS app, so if you're interested, click to read more and if not hit the delete key. I don't think either action is particularly onerous. I frequently click on a message, such as in updates from LinkedIn, to find out what is being discussed. I also frequently hit the delete key instead of following a link or looking something up on Google since I'm just not interested enough. I typically don't waste list traffic by complaining about having to hit my delete key half a dozen times though. As I said below, these links don't take you to complex hard to navigate sites. They're straight forward, and I've been clicking on each link and taking the second or two to see which app they're writing about. I haven't tabulated the numbers, but we're talking about five messages so far and a total of no more than ten. I'm sure I've deleted more messages complaining about this than there will be messages in total. It's interesting to see how people choose to invest their time. I agree Bill and Neal. It wouldn't have bothered me if this website had limited their announcement to the first one, stating, "Check our website over the 10 days for 10 great apps we like," and left it at that. I don't appreciate the daily repeat traffic. I think anyone who wanted would have noticed the first message, and taken the effort to go back daily. Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
I don’t think anyone here is trying to put down the work you guys have done, and yes, website traffic is the goal of most blogs and similar services. However, this: Check out this app, number 6 on our Top Ten Apps list: [url] says nothing except that you only had time to type up a sentence and then paste the link. Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
Hello Christopher, As the Senior Partner at Fedora Outlier I thought long and hard about having anybody from the firm posting about these daily blogs to this list just because I was worried about this type of negative reaction. Our team has been working very hard on this list and you are 100% correct when you say that we are trying to get some attention for our website. These posts and blog entries are coming from Fedora Outlier and How to be blind, both respected groups in this field and on this list. I'm sure they're trying to encourage traffic to their sites, and their articles have a "drum roll please" feel to them to try to build suspense. I don't have a problem with these messages coming to the list as is. I don't think hitting the delete key on five messages so far, and ten in total, is that big a deal if you aren't interested. I also don't think hitting enter to follow a link is that much hardship on anyone who is interested. The site is simply laid out and easy to navigate with a browser. RE: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!
Hi, If you are wanting to tell us about an app, please give us some information about it so we know if we even want to go to the web page to check it out. This sounds more like a high powered sales pitch that tries to force the user to go to the site with very little trouble on your part. I’ve gotten about three of these in the last few days and I have not, and will not, bother to go there unless I know it is of worth to me. I’m not suggesting that others should do the same by any means, but come on, why should I really care what makes your top 10 apps all that worthwhile unless you take the time to give me at least some basic information.
