My Mini got into a tizz over this;  got to 4 weeks,  got an Ok button, and 
wouldn't go away for anything; so couldn't get into the device to do 
anything.  If mine is trying to backup all app data, it won't;  there's tens 
of gigs of music in something other than iTunes.  So it would never fit, so 
it would always fail, but waste all the limited wifi bandwidthin trying.  So 
in the end,  I held the two real button - home and power - until it 
rebooted;   and I got to the unlock button before the backup message got 
there.  So I got in, got into settings, and switched the bogger off!  Can do 
it in iTunes if I really must,  but got a sweat on when I tried to turn off 
backing up app data, as it wanted to then delete anything I hadoff the 
device.  Maybe it should make it clearer what it wants to delete, but 
deleting it just cos  I've got it on iCloud hardly seems fair.

looks like my routher needs to be reset.

in here you can add up the things that are likely to be included, photos as 
well as app data is include… but, not the apps themselves.

I doubt your backup is large enough to be near that, but it can be.

My iPad backup is 4.2Gb and my iPHone fluctuates between 1.3Gb and 11.9Gb, 
depending on how many photos I've taken without dumping to my Mac.

More fundamentally, are you on the free iCloud plan, as that only comes with I 
believe around 5Gb of iCloud storage.

Noting that this is for everything you use for iCloud, contacts, e-mail etc, it 
could be that your iPhone backup is larger than the space available, and as 
such, there is not enough room… which the error message may just be misleading 
you over…

check the size of data on your phone, photos etc. and compare.

Went into settings, can turn off backup which I did and turned it back on; do 
you mean that or something else?
That did not help unfortunately. I asked it to manually back up and it got to 
6% and stopped working.
This is a 3GS and I’m not sure it even can hold 5 gigs of stuff.

in here you can add up the things that are likely to be included, photos as 
well as app data is include… but, not the apps themselves.

I doubt your backup is large enough to be near that, but it can be.

My iPad backup is 4.2Gb and my iPHone fluctuates between 1.3Gb and 11.9Gb, 
depending on how many photos I've taken without dumping to my Mac.

Neil. we have discovered my upload speed is dreadfully slow so it is probably 
causing a timeout during backup.

I need to find out if my wife’s phone is backing up when she gets home later. 
I’m backing up 35.3 megs and it’s saying it takes an hour. I don’t think 
dial-up was that slow.

with I believe around 5Gb of iCloud storage.

Noting that this is for everything you use for iCloud, contacts, e-mail 
etc, it could be that your iPhone backup is larger than the space available, 
and as such, there is not enough room… which the error message may just be
