Well, I have done the same thing and it definitely makes a difference on

I think you need a sighted person there who can see what you are doing wrong. 
For that to work, though, you would need to temporarily turn off the screen 
curtain and turn up the brightness.

I've been wondering about the screen brightness and screen curtain on when 
using the Camera and other scanning type applications. So as I suspected, that 
is not the reason my photos are all turning out to dark! The fact that I 
usually have screen brightness completely off and scan screen curtain on. I 
wonder how I can improve my photos.

Unless you had turned the phone around so the back was facing you, you were 
using the front facing camera. Apparently screen brightness does interfere with 
that one. I, like others, assumed you were using the back camera for something 
like short text, etc.

I too, have my screen brightness set low. I haven't had any problems when using 
the app, except when there isn't enough light in the room where Im trying to 
take a photo & have it recognized.

I tried it with the brightness set to 0, then 100 as well as then turning on 
the screen curtain.
I got pretty much the same results in all cases. I tried to keep my hand in the 
same position, but it is impossible to be absolutely exact which I think 
accounted for some slight variation.
The screen brightness should not effect any camera based app since you are not 
doing anything to cover the camera.
