Re: Siri freezing when using voiceover

2012-08-20 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

Officially, Apple gives two ways for rebooting the iOS device.

1) Fully shut down and then restart the device. When the device is responsive,
this is the recommended procedure.

2) When the device is unresponsive, or option 1 does not fully clear out the
problem, press and hold the power button and the home button together for 10
seconds. This creates a safe forced reboot.

The problem with crashing the springboard by pressing the power button 5 times
in rapid succession is that there is a slight chance of corrupting something
which is actively being accessed in memory during this procedure and one of the
reasons Apple does not recommend using this method. It is the closest method to
pulling the power chord from the wall whilst your desktop computer is
physically accessing the hard drive. Any sectors which are actively being
accessed may be corrupted or wiped.

I have purposely caused an app to be corrupted by crashing the springboard
using the 5 presses of the power button whilst loading the app. It was then
necessary to delete and then download the app to get it working again. Of
course, you can always perform a complete upgrade to correct such potential
problems. I prefer to remain safe and not spend the few hours rebuilding my
iPhone would require.

Hello. As far as I know, pressing the power button five times to
respring is quite safe. I have done it several times, and have
never had a problem. Also, its a lot quicker than rebooting the
 device.
Another tip: You can also restart your springboard using siri.
To do this, just start Siri and say restart. Obviously, this
won't work if siri is frozen, but I figured some people may find
 this interesting.

Hello Josh, Siri can only officially work on iPhone 4S. Aso,
 it's
questionable as to whether pressing the power/sleep button so
 many times
 is a safe respring.

Hello. This is quite interesting. I guess this bug doesn't
 just apply
to jailbroken iPhone 4 users. I recently installed Siri on my
 iPhone 4,
and I have also noticed this bug. Unfortunately, I don't
 believe there
is a permanent fix for this. When this happens, the way I
 usually fix
it is by restarting the springboard. You can do this by quickly
pressing the power button five times in a row.

I am writing to find it if any other members have had issues
 with Siri
Voiceover working together using the Iphone 4s? I use voiceover
 constantly
however I have noticed that when using Siri with Voiceover
 continuously
  that
Voiceover will say listening and that Siri will freeze, no
 tone will be
emitted to indicate that Siri is thinking. I do have hints
 turned off on
Voiceover, and I guess if I needed to I could use Siri like a
 sighted
individual but I would prefer to use the two accessibility
 features
together. I am curious if this problems cause is specifically
 do to
  Siri or
  Voiceover.

I have read that you can flick around the screen using Voiceover
 while
pressing the volume up button and that sometimes will fix the
 issue,
unfortunately I am not so lucky... A temporary fix I have come
 across
  is if
you turn on Airplane mode on/off it will reset the network and
 that will
bring Siri back online. I did report this issue to Apple
 Accessibility and
  they will investigate the issue.

In the meantime if anyone has found a more permanent solution to
 this
problem please do not hesitate to share.

Re: Siri freezing when using voiceover

2012-08-20 Thread David Chittenden
My understanding (I do not have Siri as I have an iPhone 4) is that Siri can
set the VO volume down whilst Siri is active. If you give the VO speak all
command (two-finger flick up) whilst Siri is active, you then press the volume
up button to raise the VO volume. Siri automatically stops listening whilst VO
is talking. This is how Apple is able to allow both technologies to work
simultaneously.

Note: There are other apps which can cause VO volume to reset to a lower
setting. At least with Apple apps, when you adjust the volume back to where you
prefer it whilst running the app, the new VO volume setting is then remembered.
I have a couple 3rd party apps which require me to turn VO volume up every time
I use them because they refuse to remember my VO volume setting.
