Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-28 Thread RobH.
They felt like spam to me to, so deleted them all. All the flap cos
someone gave us a clue what they were about, on list. That's the only one I
found interesting. One message advertising the TT list would have been
plenty.

But like we also keep seeing, time to put this to bed for once and for all.
Just delete everything else in this thread from here on. I'm getting good
at it now.

I hope people aren't upset with me.

For me, I made a mistake, I said I thought it was spam, so I was deleting
them myself.

I apologize to one and all if I came across myself as upset. I don't mind
hitting delete keys. I do that with over 50+ emails aday that I get because
I just don't need to read those emails that don't pertain to me.

Hello. I'd like to echo what Cara has so elegantly stated below. Also, I
have given the members of Fedora Outlier permission to post on list
regarding the apps in question. To be blunt, if it's something you don't
like or agree with, either delete it, or write them privately.

Again, if it's something which you feel has crossed the list policy
line, please please write me and/or Cara privately, forward the message,
ETC. We will deal with it, or tell you it's approved, or tell you it's
not. In either case, it helps keep list traffic down.

Thanks much.,

Hi all,

Apologies for the delay in this posting.

OMG! I cannot believe the bandwidth generated from this completely
innocent, well-meaning and helpful original topic.

Before I get started here, let me just establish that not only should
this thread be closed now but if you feel you really need to snipe back
at me for this post, either do it off-list or you will not be allowed to
post here again, no questions asked.

I welcome your comments off the list (agree or disagree) but not on the
list. So remember, when you click send, if you simply want to spout off
against me, the list or its policies, make sure it is a private note to
me or Raul.

Okay, now that that is out of the way, for those who are comparing this
to some kind of 'high-powered' sales pitch? Respectfully, you seem not
to have experienced a true high-powered pitch.

This thread was nothing of the sort and the incredible amount of
unnecessary and negative traffic this has generated is simply over the
top and not welcome here.

I love this community but for God's sake, it never ceases to amaze me
the kinds of things people will look for to complain about and the
vehemence with which the complaints are put forth.

I'm simply saying 'enough!' Move on and leave this.

the original poster and blog were trying to offer something constructive
and useful and instead of responses in that spirit, much of what has
made up this thread is just negative noise.

My personal apologies go out to everyone behind the blog where this
article is hosted as well as to the people who have supported the
poster's right to post here.

This type of thing is perfectly legit on this list.

If anyone has any questions or issues in future, where they find
themselves concerned whether or not a message may or may not be spam;

1 Consider writing us, the list moderators. (myself and Raul)

2 Consider writing the poster themselves if you know that they are a
legitimate list participant. Otherwise see number 1 above.

3 Ignore the message and move on. Simple as that.

None of the above options includes taking it upon yourself to
righteously call the poster(s) out and essentially publicly chastise them.

I hope this makes this crystal clear so we do not run into this on-list
again. If you have concerns with list policies, they should be taken up
with me or Raul.

Now, know that we both do have lives so do not expect your concerns to
get answers or responses right away. -And, for the record, if you just
want to yell through your keyboard or try to call me out, then guess
what, while I absolutely will read what you have to say, don't expect a
response. I will spend my time positively working with people here who
want to carry on intelligent and constructive conversations, who have
points they'd like to make which are honestly important to them and
which impact their lives as they use this list on a day-to-day basis.
Those are the folks I have time for.

If you feel that I've not gotten back with you when I should have then
please please please understand that I do get a lot of email and notes
do get lost from time to time. So by all means write me more than once
if need be.

I simply want what is best for this list and every person on it. So
please have patience and know that I will do my very best to make this
experience a good one for you all. :)

Thanks for reading and remember, please respond to this to me privately
if you feel you would like to. :)

Thanks and have a great night and wonderful week!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Hello Christopher,

As the Senior Partner at Fedora Outlier I thought long and hard about having
anybody from the firm posting about these daily blogs to this list just
because I was worried about this type of negative reaction. Our team has
been working very hard on this list and you are 100% correct when you say
that we are trying to get some attention for our website. If I am not
mistaken this is what is done every day on the Internet, and because our
list is talking about iOS apps I thought that there would be some people on
this list that might enjoy reading our posts.

Let me clue everyone into how this list has developed. Each one of our team
members picked one of the apps in the list and then wrote up a post about
that app. This way we were assured of having very different styles of
writing which in my opinion would make for some interesting reading. I
believe that we have accomplished this.

When you make the statement that this list has a drum role feel to it you
hit the nail right on the head. This is the whole point of any kind of a
countdown.

Finally, everyone on this list or any other list in which people post blog
snip its in order to get people to go to their websites have the right not
to click that link or to just delete the post, however, I do not think that
it is fair for those of us who are working very hard on trying to create
content that hopefully the community will like, should be ridiculed for just
trying to get noticed.

I have said my peace on this and I would hope that others on this list will
not hold my words against me if I have said anything in this message to
offend them. Believe me, if I did then I apologize because it was not my
intent.

I'm sorry to say that I also find this practice very annoying. I get
this in their email messages as well and I never follow the links and

To be very clear: I have no problem whatsoever with you guys posting these app

possibly useful tools for them to go try. However, when is the last time you
clicked a link because someone basically said “click this link”? I never do,
and I’m sure most people don’t, because I have absolutely no idea what the link
goes to and if it is worth it. Giving us just a one-sentence summary of the
app, and the app’s name, provides that missing information and will, it seems
to me, make people more likely to click through to the website. Maybe I’m off
base here, but those are my opinions. Again, I’m more than fine with you guys

not open these links. As it stands, these emails sound more like

2014-01-27 Thread Marianne Denning
There are several companies I have learned about because of these
types of posts. Why should we, as blind people, be left out of the
advertising process? I have received enough information from the
little bit of information the count down provided to decide if I
wanted to read further or not. I think the advertising has given me
additional information about the company and I appreciate it. Please
keep sending these emails.

Well said, and I completely agree. Just the apps name, and a few sentences

links. As it stands, these emails sound more like questionable promotions than
helpful messages.

Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
These posts and blog entries are coming from Fedora Outlier and How to
be blind, both respected groups in this field and on this list. I'm sure
they're trying to encourage traffic to their sites, and their articles
have a drum roll please feel to them to try to build suspense. I don't
have a problem with these messages coming to the list as is. I don't
think hitting the delete key on five messages so far, and ten in total,
is that big a deal if you aren't interested. I also don't think hitting
enter to follow a link is that much hardship on anyone who is
interested. The site is simply laid out and easy to navigate with a browser.

I, for one, will not go to the website without some sort of reason as to why I

so, with this subject line, is this a walking companion like music? GPS app?
why would I go anywhere to find out?

I have to agree with Neal on this. Also, please put your message above
email signatures and not below them. This makes your messages quicker to
read. I'm not trying to do the Mod's job here, just asking for a common

Then why can't they be a bit more up front about their promos? Putting
their messages at the top of the email instead of the bottom, and simply
telling us what they want us to know would be the polite thing to do. Don't

Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-26 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello Christopher,

As the Senior Partner at Fedora Outlier I thought long and hard about having
anybody from the firm posting about these daily blogs to this list just because
I was worried about this type of negative reaction. Our team has been working
very hard on this list and you are 100% correct when you say that we are trying
to get some attention for our website. If I am not mistaken this is what is
done every day on the Internet, and because our list is talking about iOS apps
I thought that there would be some people on this list that might enjoy reading
our posts.

Let me clue everyone into how this list has developed. Each one of our team
members picked one of the apps in the list and then wrote up a post about that
app. This way we were assured of having very different styles of writing which
in my opinion would make for some interesting reading. I believe that we have
accomplished this.

When you make the statement that this list has a drum role feel to it you hit
the nail right on the head. This is the whole point of any kind of a countdown.

Finally, everyone on this list or any other list in which people post blog snip
its in order to get people to go to their websites have the right not to click
that link or to just delete the post, however, I do not think that it is fair
for those of us who are working very hard on trying to create content that
hopefully the community will like, should be ridiculed for just trying to get
noticed.

I have said my peace on this and I would hope that others on this list will not
hold my words against me if I have said anything in this message to offend
them. Believe me, if I did then I apologize because it was not my intent.

Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-26 Thread Alex Hall
I don’t think anyone here is trying to put down the work you guys have done,
and yes, website traffic is the goal of most blogs and similar services.
However, this:

Check out this app, number 6 on our Top Ten Apps list: [url]

says nothing except that you only had time to type up a sentence and then paste
the link. This:

Check out Sendero GPS, number 6 on our Top Ten Apps! With Sendero GPS, you can
plan routes, explore distant locations, discover nearby points of interest,
figure out where you are, and so much more! Check out our review: [url]

makes me really want to know more, because that sounds like a great app and I
want to know what else you have to say about it.

To be very clear: I have no problem whatsoever with you guys posting these app
picks here, and I even welcome it as it lets newer list members in on some
possibly useful tools for them to go try.
Again, I’m more than fine with you guys
posting content like this, and would suggest doing it more than once a year,
but you may want to look at how you are trying to draw people in.

2014-01-26 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
I agree Bill and Neal.

It wouldn't have bothered me if this website had limited their announcement to
the first one, stating, Check our website over the 10 days for 10 great apps
we like, and left it at that. I don't appreciate the daily repeat traffic. I
think anyone who wanted would have noticed the first message, and taken the

Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
As I said, I don't have a problem with these messages. It's clear that
this app they're talking about is a GPS app, so if you're interested,
click to read more and if not hit the delete key. I don't think either
action is particularly onerous. I frequently click on a message, such as
in updates from LinkedIn, to find out what is being discussed. I also
frequently hit the delete key instead of following a link or looking
something up on Google since I'm just not interested enough. I typically
don't waste list traffic by complaining about having to hit my delete
key half a dozen times though. As I said below, these links don't take
you to complex hard to navigate sites. They're straight forward, and
I've been clicking on each link and taking the second or two to see
which app they're writing about.

I haven't tabulated the numbers, but we're talking about five messages
so far and a total of no more than ten. I'm sure I've deleted more
messages complaining about this than there will be messages in total.
It's interesting to see how people choose to invest their time.

Well said, and I completely agree. Just the apps name, and a few
sentences about what it does, would be wonderful. As it is, I, too, will
not open these links. As it stands, these emails sound more like
questionable promotions than helpful messages.

although I have enjoyed reading about the selections thus far, I thought
this list was supposed to be an informative list, not a vehicle for
advertising other people's products before being informative. It seems to me
that you could ask for folks to subscribe to your news-letter so they can
get this information. After all, this list does have more than 1,300 members
so if everyone puts in their two cents worth on a topic that's alot of crap
to go through.

Believe me, if I did then I apologize because it was not my
intent.

I think these articles are informative and provide reviews of apps
people might find useful. I haven't checked, but I don't think all of
the apps cost money. I don't see these posts as being advertisements for
any product or service. I think they're just pointers to interesting
articles and a web site worth checking out, and in that way, they're no
different than any other on topic posts to this list. I don't have a
problem with these posts, and I don't see them as off topic. If anyone
does, you might want to contact the list owner or moderator to get them
to weigh in on this.

just because I was worried about this type of negative reaction. Our team
has been working very hard on this list and you are 100% correct when you
say that we are trying to get some attention for our website. If I am not
mistaken this is what is done every day on the Internet, and because our
list is talking about iOS apps I thought that there would be some people on
this list that might enjoy reading our posts.

Let me clue everyone into how this list has developed. Each one of our
team members picked one of the apps in the list and then wrote up a post
about that app. This way we were assured of having very different styles of
writing which in my opinion would make for some interesting reading. I
believe that we have accomplished this.

When you make the statement that this list has a drum role feel to it you
hit the nail right on the head. This is the whole point of any kind of a
countdown.

Finally, everyone on this list or any other list in which people post
blog snip its in order to get people to go to their websites have the right
not to click that link or to just delete the post, however, I do not think
that it is fair for those of us who are working very hard on trying to
create content that hopefully the community will like, should be ridiculed
for just trying to get noticed.

I have said my peace on this and I would hope that others on this list
will not hold my words against me if I have said anything in this message to
offend them. Believe me, if I did then I apologize because it was not my
intent.

I, on the other hand, have been accurately guessing which app they chose from

These posts and blog entries are coming from Fedora Outlier and How to
be blind, both respected groups in this field and on this list. I'm sure
they're trying to encourage traffic to their sites, and their articles
have a drum roll please feel to them to try to build suspense. I don't
have a problem with these messages coming to the list as is. I don't
think hitting the delete key on five messages so far, and ten in total,
is that big a deal if you aren't interested. I also don't think hitting
enter to follow a link is that much hardship on anyone who is
interested. The site is simply laid out and easy to navigate with a browser.

Well said, and I completely agree. Just the apps name, and a few
sentences about what it does, would be wonderful. As it is, I, too, will
not open these links. As it stands, these emails sound more like
 questionable promotions than helpful messages.

Come on people! They are trying only to get attention!!! This is called
suspense! I agree that they should mention app name in message, but we
could have said a little nicely... They are only trying to help us... After
all, whats the delete key for? I really like these reviews and the only
thing i ask is the app name be put so people know what they are clicking.
Was i not nice? Well, apologies, not towards anyone! Let's all smile haha!

says nothing except that you only had time to type up a sentence and then
paste the link. This:

Check out Sendero GPS, number 6 on our Top Ten Apps! With Sendero GPS,

and I want to know what else you have to say about it.

To be very clear: I have no problem whatsoever with you guys posting
these app picks here, and I even welcome it as it lets newer list members
in on some possibly useful tools for them to go try. However, when is the
last time you clicked a link because someone basically said “click this
link†? I never do, and I’m sure most people don’t, because I have
absolutely no idea what the link goes to and if it is worth it. Giving us
just a one-sentence summary of the app, and the app’s name, provides
that missing information and will, it seems to me, make people more
likely to click through to the website. Maybe I’m off base here, but
those are my opinions. Again, I’m more than fine with you guys posting
content like this, and would suggest doing it more than once a year, but
you may want to look at how you are trying to draw people in.

Moderator Note -was- Re: Taking a walk? Don't leave home without this!

2014-01-26 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi all,

Apologies for the delay in this posting.

OMG! I cannot believe the bandwidth generated from this completely innocent,
well-meaning and helpful original topic.

Before I get started here, let me just establish that not only should this
thread be closed now but if you feel you really need to snipe back at me for
this post, either do it off-list or you will not be allowed to post here again,
no questions asked.

I welcome your comments off the list (agree or disagree) but not on the list.
So remember, when you click send, if you simply want to spout off against me,
the list or its policies, make sure it is a private note to me or Raul.

Okay, now that that is out of the way, for those who are comparing this to some
kind of 'high-powered' sales pitch? Respectfully, you seem not to have
experienced a true high-powered pitch.

This thread was nothing of the sort and the incredible amount of unnecessary
and negative traffic this has generated is simply over the top and not welcome
here.

I love this community but for God's sake, it never ceases to amaze me the kinds
of things people will look for to complain about and the vehemence with which
the complaints are put forth.

I'm simply saying 'enough!' Move on and leave this.

the original poster and blog were trying to offer something constructive and
useful and instead of responses in that spirit, much of what has made up this
thread is just negative noise.

My personal apologies go out to everyone behind the blog where this article is
hosted as well as to the people who have supported the poster's right to post
here.

This type of thing is perfectly legit on this list.

If anyone has any questions or issues in future, where they find themselves
concerned whether or not a message may or may not be spam;

1 Consider writing us, the list moderators. (myself and Raul)

2 Consider writing the poster themselves if you know that they are a legitimate
list participant. Otherwise see number 1 above.

3 Ignore the message and move on. Simple as that.

None of the above options includes taking it upon yourself to righteously call
the poster(s) out and essentially publicly chastise them.

I hope this makes this crystal clear so we do not run into this on-list again.
If you have concerns with list policies, they should be taken up with me or
Raul.

Now, know that we both do have lives so do not expect your concerns to get
answers or responses right away. -And, for the record, if you just want to yell
through your keyboard or try to call me out, then guess what, while I
absolutely will read what you have to say, don't expect a response. I will
spend my time positively working with people here who want to carry on
intelligent and constructive conversations, who have points they'd like to make
which are honestly important to them and which impact their lives as they use
this list on a day-to-day basis. Those are the folks I have time for.

If you feel that I've not gotten back with you when I should have then please
please please understand that I do get a lot of email and notes do get lost
from time to time. So by all means write me more than once if need be.

I simply want what is best for this list and every person on it. So please have
patience and know that I will do my very best to make this experience a good
one for you all. :)

Thanks for reading and remember, please respond to this to me privately if you
feel you would like to. :)

Thanks and have a great night and wonderful week!

Smiles,

Cara :)
