Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-01 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I think sometimes people don't understand that if you reply to somebody's
message, what you write is part of that thread. I know that years ago when I
started emailing I didn't understand this at all. If you want to start a new
topic and not hijack somebody's thread, it isn't enough to just change the
subject line. You need to start a new email with your new subject rather than
doing it as a reply to some other message to that list. I remember early on in
my Internet experience having somebody really bawl me out for this and it was
pure ignorance on my part. You can argue whether I should have known better,
should have understood about threads on email lists, but I truly didn't. I did
finally figure it out one day on my own, but I don't remember ever having it
explained to me because it was assumed it should be obvious.

I hope this helps anybody who doesn't understand about threads. The other thing
that often happens is that the focus of a thread does indeed change but people
don't bother to change the subject line.

RE: Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-01 Thread Alan Lemly
My own confusion with understanding thread hijacking came from using Outlook
on my computer for years for email. When you review emails individually in
POP format using Outlook, it is not clear when you reply to a message and
change the subject that you've run afoul of list etiquette. The new message
you created will be treated as such on your computer with Outlook when it's
downloaded via POP. However, as many more of us are now checking our email
using our iDevices in an IMAP environment, the hidden metadata in the
message continues to link it to its source thread and when the subject is
changed, the thread is hijacked causing the resulting irritation for those
checking mail with their iDevices' mail app.

2015-01-01 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think this has anything to do with POP or Outlook. You can read
threaded messages in POP just like you can in IMAP. Also, clients have
been supporting conversations or threads for quite a while, such as
Thunderbird, Lotus Notes or Outlook. It is true that if you don't use a
threaded client, you don't realize how your message could go unnoticed
when you hijack a thread but that's why you shouldn't assume everyone
else reads email the same way you do and you should listen to the
moderators and others on the list when they point out things like
hijacking threads and not changing subject lines.

Yes, the best thing to do when starting your own subject is to ignore the reply
button and hit Compose or New Message. The reply button is for continuing a
conversation; the new or compose button is for starting one.

I'm sorry for snapping. It's just really frustrating when you're reading a
thread on a certain subject, and then the thread change something else. This
can happen either because someone replies and changes the subject, or because
someone replies but keeps the same subject, and starts talking about something
else entirely. Both things are annoying. It's better to just start a new email
entirely, rather than replying to an email if you know that the thing that you
want to talk about is different than what's being discussed already.

Re: Threads: this is in response to the thread hijacking discussion of Bookshare to bria softphone

2015-01-02 Thread Dave Sheridan
Hi

It did appear that the thread was hijacked as Ari said as the emails were
grouped together. I also accept what you say Hank but trust me, it did appear
on first glance that the Bookshare thread was hijacked. It's impossible to show
this as several emails are grouped together. I checked back on your original
email and this doesn't appear to be in response to to a bookshare email.
