RE: Data types and cabling two iphones together?

2020-10-17 Thread Richard Turner
I found Alan's excellent explanation. See if this meets your needs.
Read through it completely before deciding.
>From Alan:
Hi List,

I decided to make detailed notes of the steps involved in setting up a new
iPhone mainly for my own benefit since I forget what is involved as I only do
this every couple of years. In my case, I bought this SE 2020 directly from the
Apple Store app with no SIM card included since I have a prepaid Verizon plan
and could not specify my carrier successfully when ordering. The below numbered
list will be very detailed since I'd rather have too much information than not
enough. Any settings provided came from my iPhone 8 running iOS 13.4.1.

1. Opened iTunes on my Windows 7 computer, verified I was running its
latest version of 12.10.6, connected my iPhone 8 using the lightning cable, and
did an encrypted backup.
2. Did an iCloud backup by going to Settings - Alan Lemly - Apple ID -
iCloud - iTunes and App Store, iCloud, iCloud backup, and executing Backup now.
3. I read a lot of books using the BARD Mobile app and since any books
downloaded to an iPhone are not transferred to a new restored iPhone, I made a
list in an Excel file of the downloaded books I wanted to re-download to my new
iPhone and the location of any current reading position in those books.
4. I plugged my lightning cable connected to my computer to the new phone
and the Apple logo appeared on the screen. The white screen appeared a few
seconds later with the cycling languages appearing and I pressed the home
button 3 times quickly to turn on Voiceover. Although I was hearing clicks as I
swiped, Voiceover did not start talking until a number of seconds later. In
fact, I pressed the home button 3 times again because I wasn't sure I had
turned Voiceover on. This turned Voiceover off and I had to press the home
button 3 times again to turn it back on and I heard Voiceover say hello and
when I swiped once, Voiceover said press home to open.
5. I pressed home and Voiceover said Setup and put me in a list of
language buttons with English at the top. I double tapped on English.
6. The screen which opened said Select your country or region heading. I
double tapped on the United States button which was the first in the list.
7. The screen which opened said Quick start heading Bring your current
iPhone or iPad near this iPhone to sign in and set up. The older iPhone must be
using iOS 11 or later with Bluetooth turned on. There was a button at the end
to Set up manually.
8. A screen opened on my old iPhone to set up a new iPhone using my apple
ID with a button to continue. A screen appeared to position some pattern in a
circle but I double tapped the Authenticate manually button instead.
9. I was prompted to input the 6 digit authentication code displayed on my
new iPhone using the number pad screen on my old iPhone. My new iPhone then
prompted me to enter my passcode of my old iPhone. I had to double tap each
number on the on screen number pad on my new iPhone since touch typing was not
turned on.
10. I was prompted to set up touch ID on the new iPhone which I did.
11. Several screens were presented asking me to place my finger and lift my
finger which I did. I was then taken to a screen which said Adjust your grip
and it said keep going to capture the edges of your grip. I double tapped a
Continue button at the bottom of this screen.
12. I was then prompted to again place and lift my finger until I got the
Complete message. Touch ID is ready was spoken and I then executed the Continue
button at the bottom of that screen.
13. The next screen said Transfer your data heading. The explanation said
you can directly transfer your data during setup or finish downloading it
later. Buttons on this screen were Transfer from iPhone, Download from iCloud,
or other options. The Transfer from iPhone said the time to transfer was about
1 hour. The download from iCloud said I could start using my iPhone in about 15
minutes and my data would download later over wifi. I executed the Transfer
from iPhone button.
14. I was taken to a Terms and conditions screen on the new iPhone where I
double tapped an Agree button in the bottom right corner.
15. I was taken to a Settings from other iPhone heading screen where it
listed some settings about allowing Siri to use voice input, contacts, etc. and
allowing maps to use my location. I executed the Continue button at the bottom
of this screen without customizing any settings.
16. I was taken to a Keep your iPhone up to date heading screen which was
basically a commercial for updating iOS automatically. At the bottom of this
screen was a Continue button followed by an Install updates manually button. I
chose the Install updates manually button.
17. I was then taken to a screen to Add cards to Apple Pay. Instead of
executing the Continue button, I chose to Set up later in Wal

I have never heard of connecting two phones via a cable.
There is an option to set up a new phone over WiFi from your previous phone.
Alan Lemley has posted instructions in the past.
If I find them, I will repost them unless alan replies sooner.

Hello, I have the usb3 camera adapter which my workplace bought for my use with
a usb microphone. I understand that two iphones can be cabled together for data
transfer. My question is will it only deal with icloud data, or will it
actually transfer downloaded music, Audible books, and that type of content to
the new phone? Can this be done at any time, or must it be done when first
setting up the new phone?

Maybe you don't have iCloud turned on for Notes on one of the devices.
For me there would be way too many drawbacks for using the same Apple Id with
my wife. Maybe if you don't use Facetime or iMessage it would be OK, but I
certainly wouldn't want to get my wife's iMessages or Facetime calls or vice
versa.
I guess you could use a separate Apple Id just for those services and it is of
course everybody's choice, but it wouldn't work for us. As far as sharing Notes
is concerned that could be also achieved by using the Reminders app if you set
up both Apple Id's as a family account, if there is an appointment, for
example, which we both should be notified about one of us will put it under the
family category in Reminders and we both get the reminder, for shopping list we
use AnyList which if setup properly let's one person add an item and it's
instantly visible to the other person using the account.
Most apps have family sharing enabled so that solves that problem and with two
Apple Id's and our Apple Music family subscription we both have our own
recommendations, preferences and so on.

Whats App on two iPhones

2015-11-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello List,

I am curious if anybody knows more about why it seems not possible to use
Whats App on two iPhones. I have my new iPhone 6S, but I also still have my
5S which is unlocked and which I will most likely keep until March so I can
use it for my trip to the Philippines. Anyhow, I had of course installed
Whats App on my new 6S and set it up. Everything works fine, but just this
morning I was streaming some music via Airplay to my Sonos system and I
wanted to use Whats App to send a voice message to a friend. Anyhow, I
reached for my 5S and when I opened Whats App it told me that this phone
wasn't verified. So I put in my phone number and it ended up sending a text
with a verification code to my 6S, I entered the code and everything worked
fine on the 5S and I was able to send my message.

A bit later I went back to my 6S and now Whats App here said it wasn't
verified and I had to go through the process all over, send a new
verification message and so on. This time, however, I was told I couldn't
verify it right now and I had to wait another 23 minutes before trying it
again so it seems that you half to wait about 30 minutes in between
verifying a second time.

Anyhow, my question is why I can't simplyuse Whats App on two devices. I
should mention that my 5S is only connected to WiFi right now and has no SIM
so maybe that is the reason?

Regards,

Sieghard

I am currently with Verizon and have two separate lines. Is it possible to
assign a different ringtone to a contact which is present on both phones. ? In
other words Contact will have a special ringtone on phone 1 and a different
ringtone on phone2.

Hello,

the answer to everything is yes. To keep apps and other information synced,
turn on iCloud on both phones. Since your the owner of both devices, you will
only need an iCloud backup of 1 device.

RE: Two iPhones: files and folders

2012-09-21 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Cheryl, if you backed up using iTunes, yes, there's a way to restore your
folder structure. Connect the new phone, locate it in the iTunes source
list, and bring up the context menu with shift+f10. Choose restore from
backup, and choose the backup you took from the old phone. Using this
methods restores the folder structure every time.

Thanks so much. I used "restore from backup" but chose it to restore from the

Hello Cheryl there's a good chance that you can transfer all your files and
folders as they are from your old phone to your new phone I had in AT&T 64 GB
phone transferred to a Sprint 16 GB phone all my files and folders came out
fine what you need to do is sync to iCloud with your old phone first then say
that you want to restore from a backup on iCloud with your new phone
