Re: Wireless connection issues.
I had the same issues with my iPhone. I reset my settings, and that resolved the problem. I have a router from the cable company and had no trouble with other things staying connected. You are certainly not the only one who has had a problem, and I do not think it is necessarily the router. Good luck. Re: Wireless connection issues.
Hi, if you use Windows I recommend Wireless Netview. It will display all wireless networks in your area and give you what kind of encryption they are using, the mac address of the router, but most importantly, the channel they are using. I found it rather interesting that most of the routers in my range are on channel 6 and / or 11. That's because many routers default to one of these 2 channels and no one bothers changing them. So, I set my router to channel 7. No one else in range was using it, and so the interference lessened a lot. The link for this neat utility is below. Note that I've only tested this with Window-Eyes, but it looks pretty standard and so should work with other readers. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html -- Raul A. Hi, you are right, and below are some other addresses which are possible. 10.0.0.1 172.16.0.1 172.16.1.1 192.168.1.1 192.168.0.1 I've even seen some phone voip routers use the following. 192.168.11.1 192.168.15.1 The best way is to attach an ethernet cable to the router so you are not using Wireless, then see what the ip address of your computer is with ipconfig from the command line prompt. It will also tell you on the last line what the gateway address is, and that's the router address. However for some this might be geting too technical. I would be willing to help more off list if needed since this is straying off the iOS area of discussion. -- Raul A. Gallegos A wise old man said to me once, You should question everything in life. Re: Wireless connection issues.
Hi Peter. Sadly, and this is not to attack you, but it's not an iOS 5.1.1 issue. I am not even updated to 5.1.1, and have the same problems with my wireless network. The issue seems less buggy with 6, though to be honest, I have not put it on my primary device yet, so it hasn't been fully put through its paces. Scott On 8/21/12, Jon Pierson joncpier...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Mari, You will need to read the router's documentation (probably online is best) to find out some of this. That particular router can be set up for strong password encryption that your iPhone can handle, let's hope the other devices in the house are relatively new so they will as well. What you want ideally is called WPA2, and your iPhone will accept that password strength. You can avoid typing in long strings of Password material by using a shared key. That will allow you for example to use a common phrase that your router will translate into a very strong password. All this sounds rather complicated but there is a lot of data out there on the Internet describing best practices and like I said, your router documentation may be more accessible on the Web, unless of course you have a tech-savvy reader handy. RE: Wireless connection issues.
Setting up a wireless router is not necessarily the easiest thing to do. It's definitely possible that the router is defective as was the one I recently purchased. However that is unlikely. For the key you just need to make up a number and keep track of it since you will need it for all your devices. You also may need to change the channel that is used due to interference. Good luck. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mari Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 1:38 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Wireless connection issues. Apple has always had the set-up that wifi drops except when specifically being used to maximise battery life. Whenever you load an app that requires wifi, connection to preferred network is established. Both companies deny the problem, yet the reports continue. One phone was replaced; on mine the problem seem to resolve. The tip off on my own phone was a 185 meg download charged to my data plan at a time when the phone was several feet from the WIFI router. You can bet I did not pay for the overage. I suspect there is an issue involving the current OS version and certain routers. -Len On 8/19/2012 10:36 PM, Jon Pierson wrote: Hi Mari, First, that unsecured router's not a good idea, the 54G's easy to configure. RE: Wireless connection issues.
Hi Mari, You must be connected via wire to your router for configuration to work reliably. You could in theory connect wirelessly but if you start changing parameters you would then lose your connection to the configuration page. Hello, Almost every router uses 192.168 as the first two number sequences. However, for the 3rd and 4th series, I have seen 0 or 1 or 2 used for each. It is always best to check documentation for the correct address for your router. My current router is 192.168.2.1 for example. Then take your favorite browser and go to http://192.168.1.1 And browse through the router screens like any other web page, you can't miss the wireless setup. Channel selection is your choice and the other devices you mention should handle the switch after you reboot them. The choice of frequency is up to you and it depends on what's in your area. Hello, It is almost always the router. Also, it is most frequently crowded wifi channels, followed by old router firmware, followed by old routers having components burn out. A network tech friend told me any router that lasts more than two years has gotten your money's worth. Re: Wireless connection issues.
Hello, Try updating the router's firmware. Most routers have firmware upgrades every six months or so because wifi stacks are constantly changing. This is both at work and at home. My iPhone, on the other hand, drops the connection regularly and is annoying when I'm trying to do Facetime, for example. So the frustrations you're experiencing are not happening to just you. I've tried resetting the router, resetting my network settings on the phone, all to no satisfactory solution. Hello, That depends on your area, use of chordless phones, microwaves, even radio and tv receivers, as well as other wireless systems in the area. test each of the available channels for about a week per channel until you find one which provides the best / most constant signal. Re: Wireless connection issues.
I will try changing the channels, i have upgraded the firware. Now if i am sitting two rooms away from the router i stay connected for the most part, however if i go the kitchen my wifi drops, other pc's we have connect just fine. Could it also be That Apple has implemented it security feature to wear when the phone is locked the Wi-Fi drops? Also, we have a TV in the room next the router and also a cordless phone plus the two desktop PCs on the same room could that be affecting the connectivity of the router. --
RE: Wireless connection issues.
How exactly do I secure the Wi-Fi connection I saw something about wireless security and then the different choices and I read something about WPA2 but then asked for some kind of security key? I'm surprised to see how many people are having similar issues I thought I was the only one I do appreciate everybody's help and I hope that things resolved soon I may just think about replacing the router does that sound that something that should be done? I will take the suggestion from somebody who replied and I will stick with one of the many wireless channels for a few weeks and see if that helps --
