RE: accessible accessories to make a dumb exercise bike a smart exercise bike

2021-03-06 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Different folks for different folks I suppose. Where as you don’t see the need
for the extras on certain items, I on the other hand have no need or desire for
an Apple watch or even Alexa for example. I in turn don’t see the point to what
the Peloton offers with its workout programs and live coaches and all those
bells and whistles, but I’m sure others find that to be what’s attractive about
that equipment.

I just want to be able to somehow access the same info I’d be able to see if I
could visually look at my bike’s output display.

See my progress, chart my miles logged etc. No different than wanting the same
on a treadmill or even going for a walk for that matter. What’s the point to
going for a leisurely stroll other than trying to get the semblance of a
workout in? try to see if you can increase your distance, maybe pick up the
pace and cover more ground in a shorter period of time with the apps on your
phone?

I’m more inclined to buy the accessories separately to make my “dumb” bike a
bit smarter as opposed to buying a smart bike whereas the Bluetooth Instant Pot
episode shows, built in accessibility can be a fickle thing. All things being
equal, I’d opt for the more analog option or at least where there’s a backup or
workaround in case the technology or app or whatever breaks.

Either way, it’s good we have options to fit our particular use cases and needs.

Hi Cristobal,

We purchased a spin bike a while ago and it's also very simple and without any
smart features. My wife and I do have Apple Watches so we use them to set
whatever we want to do, mostly just by time, e.g. a 15-minute, 20-minute etc.
indoor bike workout. I find it is nice enough to see my heart rate, calories
burned and so on, but personally I don't get it why I would want all that other
stuff, e.g. distance, cadence and so on. I couldn't care less how far these
electronic gadgets thinks I biked, I mean, I'm just in one spot and as long as
I get a workout then that is what I want. To me a lot of these gadgets are ways
to liberate me from my hard-earned Dollars and I find there is just too many
ways for me to spend it so in recent years I have really scaled back the gadget
stuff and I ask myself if I really want let alone need something.

Hello Richard,

If only it were that simple. This CNet articles gives a quick breakdown on what
one would need to make a “dumb” bike smarter:
https://www.cnet.com/health/diy-peloton-bike-how-to-build-your-own-smart-cycle/

There are gadgets that measure power output and that can measure distance along
with heart rate, but as always the question for us is what’s accessible.

Simon’s response was helpful in letting me know that Wahoo’s platform and
products are more or less accessible for example.

One can go all out to try to replicate the Peloton experience, but I just
really want access to my workout stats.

I would think that the phone in your pocket would track your steps if you
enabled that in the health app, or a pedometer app.

And, doesn't the Fitbit track heart rate if you do not want the Apple Watch?

Just some thoughts.

I got my self a wahoo fitness HR monitor
I can’t remember the model but it works great with the Wahoo fitness app on my
phone or an iPod touch,

To ad to this I got a Wahoo cadiance and speed monitor which has three parts,

The main body with the sensors
Attaches to the main bike frame,
On the bottom bar of the back wheel support,
So it can pick up both the rear wheel spinning an the pedal going around,

There is a little rubber band thing with a sensor device in it that goes on the
pedal arm,

And another little sensor that attaches to the spokes of the back wheel that
then like the sensor on the pedal arm gets picked up by the main wahoo sensor
that is on the bottom wheel arm 9bracket),

This uses Bluetooth 4 in my devices case to connect to the wahoo fitness app on
my phone or ipod touch and picks up how fast the back when is spinning,
And also how fast you are pedalling.

These feed in to the app and together you can get a pretty good view of your
workout data,

The app does take some getting use to and I would advise playing around with it
to setup the appropriate workout for yourself,
And then once you have the hr monitor and caidance device,
You can pair those to your app.

Hope that helps.

Oh and the wahoo app is very accessible but full of a lot of stuff.

Cheers,

These feed in to the app and together you can get a pretty good view of your
workout data,

The app does take some getting use to and I would advise playing around with it
to setup the appropriate workout for yourself,
And then once you have the hr monitor and caidance device,
You can pair those to your app.

Hope that helps.

Oh and the wahoo app is very accessible but full of a lot of stuff.

Cheers,

Subject: accessible accessories to make a dumb exercise bike a smart exercise
bike

Hello list,
So as the subject line states, I’d like to make my “dumb” exercise bike
smarter. I’ve poked around online and there appear to be lots of resources on
this topic since I like a lot of other folks don’t’ feel like shelling out the
big bucks for a peloton along with the subscription.
I’ve got a 15 year old Schwinn recumbent bike that is still holding strong and
am not looking to upgrade as long as it’s still working. Even then, I think I’d
be more inclined to buying a more traditional bike for when I next upgrade
instead of something that’s Internet connected where with any sort of app or
firmware update, it can become inaccessible just like that.
Anyway, getting to my question, has anyone tackled this dumb bike/smart bike
project? Can they recommend any iOS accessible tools to get for measuring heart
rate, speed, distance etc.? I’m not an Apple watch owner and have no desire to
get one and would be perfectly fine with a stand-alone heart rate monitor. My
understanding is that Wahoo fitness stuff is the way to go to get connected,
but again and as always, what’s accessible for us? iOS app/service?
Thanks,
Cristobal

2021-03-03 Thread Richard Turner
I would think that the phone in your pocket would track your steps if you
enabled that in the health app, or a pedometer app.
And, doesn't the Fitbit track heart rate if you do not want the Apple Watch?
Just some thoughts.

"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen."
