HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri
HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors / Tim Hardwick Apple began taking pre-orders for its HomePod on Friday, but the company has remained unusually reticent regarding some of the Siri-based smart speaker's finer functions. Last week we learned that HomePod can play songs purchased through iTunes Music as well as stream podcasts and Beats 1 radio, but Apple didn't address questions about the device's handling of iTunes Match content stored in iCloud Music Libraries. For those unaware, iCloud Music Library lets users upload or "match" up to 100,000 songs from their personal music library with the DRM-free iTunes Store catalog, without eating into their standard iCloud storage allocation. The feature comes as part of Apple's iTunes Match service ($24.99 a year) and is also included with every Apple Music subscription ($9.99 monthly). As it turns out, both iTunes Match and Apple Music subscribers will be able to use HomePod's Siri voice-based activation to access tracks stored in iCloud Music Library. The detail was seemingly confirmed on Sunday by Apple, as relayed by iMore's Serenity Caldwell in a tweet. Also Sunday, Daring Fireball's John Gruber reported hearing similar iCloud Music Library support from "a friend seeded with HomePod", although how Siri works with cloud-stored tracks not matched with the official iTunes Store catalog remains unknown. Okay, got some HomePod clarification: iTunes Match *and* Apple Music users can access their iCloud Music Library via Siri. — Serenity Caldwell (@settern) January 28, 2018 To reiterate, the user whose iCloud account is linked to HomePod can access their Apple Music subscription, tracks stored in their Cloud Music Library, and iTunes Store purchases via Siri. However, Siri will not be able to control any content streamed over AirPlay from supporting devices. Meanwhile, HomePod owners without an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription can still play music they've purchased on iTunes, as well as stream podcasts and Beats 1 radio, but Siri requests for playing songs by name, genre, artist, and so on will not be available. Apple has still to clarify how HomePod handles Family Sharing subscriptions to Apple Music, and whether the speaker's Bluetooth 5.0 specification means it will accept pairing requests from devices over the Bluetooth protocol. Apple has positioned the HomePod as a speaker that can stream Apple Music, but with built-in Siri, users can also send messages, set timers and reminders, check the news, control HomeKit-enabled smart home accessories, and complete several other tasks without needing to take out their iPhone. The speaker is equipped with spatial awareness and Apple-engineered audio technology, including a seven‑tweeter array and high-excursion woofer. It stands almost seven inches tall and is powered by Apple's A8 chip. HomePod is available in the United States ($349), UK (£319), and Australia ($499). Apple is currently taking pre-orders for the HomePod, with the device set to ship on Friday, February 9. Re: iCloud music library
Hi, Mary! Well, this Apple Music lark is quite a tortuous and mysterious process! You have to enable iCloud Music Library to start the process going. I have never had iTunes Match so I had to enable Apple Music too and then Apple servers had to start from scratch scanning my iTunes library and uploading copies. If you have had iTunes Match, Apple will already have done this process to your library, so no need to do more, perhaps. I noticed little completion sounds and accidentally found an Activity symbol whirling away at the top right of the itunes window. When I clicked on that symbol, a pop up explained which track it was currently uploading. You can also go to the itunes menu on your mac, File, Library and select Update iCloud library if it is not dimmed just to see if any updating is needed. I have 10762 items (70GB) in iTunes and, although my fairly new Mac mini has been churning away uploading music for over 24 hours now on a fast broadband connection, it still has masses of tracks saying Waiting to upload. There seems to be no way of finding out what percentage of the library is still waiting but the Activity Pop up does show that it keeps moving on. So another few days should see it through! If you have not yet enabled iCloud Music Library, it could be worth waiting a while to let Apple sort out bugs and let Apple's servers recover from the onslaught of millions of our itunes libraries all wanting to be uploaded at once! I do have iTunes match subscription still. Perhaps that is why iCloud music is enabled? I can't find iTunes match anywhere anymore. But I still have the subscription according to my subscriptions in iTunes. I just can't find anything about updating iTunes match. And I don't think all of my music was uploaded to the cloud. At least, I never heard any sort of activity or had my machine slow down or anything like that. How did you know your music was uploading? I have not asked the new music feature to put anything into my library. So I truly do hope that nothing is screwed up. The only thing I have added to my library since this new Apple music feature came on where things I actually bought from the iTunes store. Re: iCloud music library
I must say that Mary's is the sort of experience I have. I too have got match subscription but I can't find anything relating to itunes match in the menus, and my icloud library is enabled although I had not enabled it knowingly. I'm totally confused. I've been reading constantly on the list and on the internet about apple music but I still have doubts about my itunes match. I won't be subscribing to apple music and I have no idea how this is going to affect my itunes match side of things. So far I have noticed a few albums missing from my icloud library which I had previously uploaded via itunes match. I've also since the introduction of apple music bought a few albums via itunes. I see a post on the list which gives steps to restore previous itunes library but I hesitate to mess about with it i in case I lose my purchases. Apple music and your iCloud music library
One of the things that Apple music touts is the ability to in addition to having the huge iTunes music catalog at your disposal, also, apparently being able to have your entire icloud music library too. I've found a loophole in this, and wanna know if it's me, or if I'm doing something wrong. I used to subscribe to itunes match, but let the subspription lapse last fibruary. Thouugh, when I logged into itunes today, I saw my old itunes match library. I thought, cool! However, when I go to download one of those old tracks, I get an error 8003 code on the mac, and nothing on the iOS devices. so, if you let your itunes match lapse, are those old tracks not available any more, in spite of, what, I think, apple states and the fact that I can still see them, which is a bit misleading I think. Apple said that itunes match wasn't required, that you'd essentally get it anyway when you subscribed to apple music. any ideas? thanks! -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
