2012-12-13 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello,

I have a wifi only model of the mini. I honestly wish I waited and bought the
cellular model. Just the flexibility it would have brought is notice by me
at times. I recently spent a week in south florida, and brought my iPad mini.
There were times when I definitely missed not having cellular data
connectivity. I actually ended up turning on the hotspot feature on my iPhone
5 to remedy this problem. I mean, if you never plan to take your mini out your
home, or anywhere where your not sure of the wifi access, sure, the wifi only
model will work a treat. But, if you really plan to travel with it, or, your
not really sure what your plans are for the device, I would spend the extra
money.

Folks have carried netbooks and laptops on trains for years; why not a
tablet. A smaller one would be more convenient I reckon, the Mini would be
a cheaper compromise, though still doesn't resolve network accessibility
unless he/one subscribes to one of the wifi services. BT over here (UK)
offer this for non-cellular devices.

her iPhone is not as fun as it is on the iPad because of the text size
and because of more scrolling which is done from the iPhone, but the iPad
is perfect for her socialization, email, and book reading needs.

So, I imagine that eventually the girls in my life will convince me to
get one or both of them an iPad. Until then, scroll scroll scroll from
the iPhone. I keep telling them to just use Nook and Voice Over and let
it do all the work. Or better yet, Audible books. But no one listens to
 me. smile.

Give me a little credit bro. I knew the obvious differences between
the iPad and iPhone, but having heard so much about iPad specific
apps, better processor, etc. I guess I was a little optimistic. I
think I would be better served by going for the iPhone 5, but I would
only feel good about that if the upgrade is significantly better than
my iPhone 4S. Then I start thinking I could just wait until next year
to get the 5S or whatever they're calling it. Decisions, decisions,
but that's what you get when you're trying to stay productive on the

Re: iPad Hater

2012-12-12 Thread Rick Alfaro

Hi Carol.

I have a WiFi only Mini and haven't missed anything because I also have
an iPhone 4s. If I didn't have my 4s, I would miss the cellular aspect
for sure. Personally, I use the Mini more as a consumption device
around the house, meaning books, pod casts, some email and some browsing
and I love it in that context. I would never give up my iPhone however
for maximum portability no matter where I go with it. Just my thoughts.

Kevin,

Give me a little credit bro. I knew the obvious differences between
the iPad and iPhone, but having heard so much about iPad specific
apps, better processor, etc. I guess I was a little optimistic. I
think I would be better served by going for the iPhone 5, but I would
only feel good about that if the upgrade is significantly better than
my iPhone 4S. Then I start thinking I could just wait until next year
to get the 5S or whatever they're calling it. Decisions, decisions,
but that's what you get when you're trying to stay productive on the
road. At the very least I was hoping Dropbox would be accessible
off-line since that's doable on notebooks.--Joe

2012-12-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

I think buying an iPad 2 now is a bad choice, it would be like buying an
iPhone 4 rather than a 5. The iPad Retina as they call the latest version
has a much much faster processor and, of course, it has the retina screen
which may not as important to you, but if you have sighted family or friends
who maybe want to look at pictures it's worth it. It does also have a
greatly improved camera and it has SIRI which the iPad 2 does not have.

I think those are enough compelling reasons not to buy an iPad 2.

Sieghard

Right now it just feels like one big ass screen that feels more

When I bought my i phad 2, I just got the wifi model since I already have an i
phone. If I really want to, I can use my phone as a hot spot. Usually,
though, even if I take my i phad with me, I'm someplace with wifi. I even have
an app on there called wifi finder for when I'm someplace where I don't know
where there's wifi so I can find open spots.
I figured it wasn't worth the extra cost to get an i pad with cellular.

Re: iPad Hater

2012-12-11 Thread Rick alfaro
Joe,

To do the things you are wanting, you will need a device with a cellular radio
which means either an iPhone, or iPad with cellular access. Personally, I
think the Mini is a great choice but from what you are saying, it sounds to me
like the iPhone 5 is the way to go for you. I have an iPhone 4s and an iPad
Mini with WiFi only so it’s kind of the best of both worlds for me without
having to spring for an additional data plan.

Best,

All sarcasm aside, I do believe that both iPad and iPhone have their
place and will be useful to some and not as much to others. I think it
highly depends on the needs of the user. It's already been discussed
much on the list the differences between iPad and iPhone and why one
chooses one over the other. Personally I'm fine without the iPad and
perfectly happy with the iPhone, but someone like my wife and daughter
would really enjoy the iPad for the kinds of things you can do on it VS
the iPhone. For example, my daughter is sighted and an avid reader.
Reading books on her iPhone is not as fun as it is on the iPad because
of the text size and because of more scrolling which is done from the

Kevin,

Give me a little credit bro. I knew the obvious differences between the iPad
and iPhone, but having heard so much about iPad specific apps, better
processor, etc. I guess I was a little optimistic. I think I would be better
served by going for the iPhone 5, but I would only feel good about that if the
upgrade is significantly better than my iPhone 4S. Then I start thinking I
could just wait until next year to get the 5S or whatever they're calling it.
Decisions, decisions, but that's what you get when you're trying to stay
productive on the road. At the very least I was hoping Dropbox would be

Favourite any Dropbox file in the app you are using to have a local version
available when you are offline.

 Joe,

To do the things you are wanting, you will need a device with a cellular
radio which means either an iPhone, or iPad with cellular access.
Personally, I think the Mini is a great choice but from what you are saying,
it sounds to me like the iPhone 5 is the way to go for you. I have an iPhone
4s and an iPad Mini with WiFi only so it’s kind of the best of both worlds
for me without having to spring for an additional data plan.

 Hello,

So I’m not really an iPad hater. Still, made you think, didn’t it?

Anyway, I got an iPad 4th gen as a surprise. Honestly, I don’t get it. It’s
the oversized iPhone I feared. The single best feature I can point to is the
four-finger swipe to switch between apps. Otherwise, without 3G access, I
can’t access Dropbox outside of wireless range. Only one of my text editors
will give me some access to the Dropbox file structure, but overall this
doesn’t work as the commuter tool I was hoping for.

Where am I going wrong? Are there apps that let you read Dropbox files
outside of wireless range, or is 3G really needed to make this a viable
commuter device? I’m thinking I’d be better off upgrading to the iPhone 5 for
the faster processor and 4G connections, but before selling off this unit, I
want to make sure I’m giving it a fair shake. Right now it just feels like
one big ass screen that feels more awkward than useful. Even the greater web
page range is not enough to make me admire the extra screen real estate.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

 Joe

RE: iPad Hater

2012-12-11 Thread Marco Migotti
I love my iPad. Apps like TuneIn and iBooks work so much better on it then
on my 4s. I admit that it isn't as portable as the phone, but it has its
place. Facebook works beautifully on it too.

Raul,
Haven't you figured out that we women never listen. YOu'll be buying iPads
before you know it.

All sarcasm aside, I do believe that both iPad and iPhone have their place
and will be useful to some and not as much to others. I think it highly
depends on the needs of the user. It's already been discussed much on the
list the differences between iPad and iPhone and why one chooses one over
the other. Personally I'm fine without the iPad and perfectly happy with the
iPhone, but someone like my wife and daughter would really enjoy the iPad
for the kinds of things you can do on it VS the iPhone. For example, my
daughter is sighted and an avid reader. Reading books on her iPhone is not
as fun as it is on the iPad because of the text size and because of more
scrolling which is done from the iPhone, but the iPad is perfect for her
socialization, email, and book reading needs.

So, I imagine that eventually the girls in my life will convince me to get
one or both of them an iPad. Until then, scroll scroll scroll from the
iPhone. I keep telling them to just use Nook and Voice Over and let it do
all the work. Or better yet, Audible books. But no one listens to me.

There is this new thing out; called an iPhone I beleive.
 Try that.
