Hello, I have a wifi only model of the mini. I honestly wish I waited and bought the cellular model. Just the flexibility it would have brought is notice by me at times. I recently spent a week in south florida, and brought my iPad mini. There were times when I definitely missed not having cellular data connectivity. I actually ended up turning on the hotspot feature on my iPhone 5 to remedy this problem. I mean, if you never plan to take your mini out your home, or anywhere where your not sure of the wifi access, sure, the wifi only model will work a treat. But, if you really plan to travel with it, or, your not really sure what your plans are for the device, I would spend the extra money. hth. The Mini would have suited you better; but they don't do the 3g or 4g version yet. iPhones are probably the quicker, easier, and probably the more expensive solution. Folks have carried netbooks and laptops on trains for years; why not a tablet. A smaller one would be more convenient I reckon, the Mini would be a cheaper compromise, though still doesn't resolve network accessibility unless he/one subscribes to one of the wifi services. BT over here (UK) offer this for non-cellular devices. Still, made you think, didn't it? Anyway, I got an iPad 4th gen as a surprise. Honestly, I don't get it. It's the oversized iPhone I feared. The single best feature I can point to is the four-finger swipe to switch between apps. Otherwise, without 3G access, I can't access Dropbox outside of wireless range. Only one of my text editors will give me some access to the Dropbox file structure, but overall this doesn't work as the commuter tool I was hoping for. Where am I going wrong? Are there apps that let you read Dropbox files outside of wireless range, or is 3G really needed to make this a viable commuter device? I'm thinking I'd be better off upgrading to the iPhone 5 for the faster processor and 4G connections, but before selling off this unit, I want to make sure I'm giving it a fair shake. Right now it just feels like one big ass screen that feels more awkward than useful. Even the greater web page range is not enough to make me admire the extra screen real estate. I'm sorry, what was that? What did you say? Yes, many women don't listen, but many men don't hear. smile. So it evens out. In all seriousness, I think you are right that I will eventually end up buying an iPad. It might be a family iPad for starters to see what use we get out of it to start with though and then we can go from there. I need to get my big promotion first though before that can happen. RE: iPad Hater
Hi Keith, I think buying an iPad 2 now is a bad choice, it would be like buying an iPhone 4 rather than a 5. The iPad Retina as they call the latest version has a much much faster processor and, of course, it has the retina screen which may not as important to you, but if you have sighted family or friends who maybe want to look at pictures it's worth it. It does also have a greatly improved camera and it has SIRI which the iPad 2 does not have. I think those are enough compelling reasons not to buy an iPad 2. When I bought my i phad 2, I just got the wifi model since I already have an i phone. If I really want to, I can use my phone as a hot spot. Usually, though, even if I take my i phad with me, I'm someplace with wifi. I even have an app on there called wifi finder for when I'm someplace where I don't know where there's wifi so I can find open spots. I figured it wasn't worth the extra cost to get an i pad with cellular. jmo, Caitlyn On 2012-12-12, at 4:23 AM, Carol Pearson carol.pearso...@googlemail.com wrote: Following on this thread, I'm about to receive my iPad mini for Christmas! Joe, To do the things you are wanting, you will need a device with a cellular radio which means either an iPhone, or iPad with cellular access. Personally, I think the Mini is a great choice but from what you are saying, it sounds to me like the iPhone 5 is the way to go for you. I have an iPhone 4s and an iPad Mini with WiFi only so it’s kind of the best of both worlds for me without having to spring for an additional data plan. Kevin, Give me a little credit bro. I knew the obvious differences between the iPad and iPhone, but having heard so much about iPad specific apps, better processor, etc. I guess I was a little optimistic. I think I would be better served by going for the iPhone 5, but I would only feel good about that if the upgrade is significantly better than my iPhone 4S. Then I start thinking I could just wait until next year to get the 5S or whatever they're calling it. Decisions, decisions, but that's what you get when you're trying to stay productive on the road. Joe, I don't have an IPad that has the cell connections, but maybe you could think of returning the IPad you received to upgrade it for one that can connect to your carrier. I love my iPad. Apps like TuneIn and iBooks work so much better on it then on my 4s. I admit that it isn't as portable as the phone, but it has its place. Facebook works beautifully on it too.
