Re: iPad as a Productivity Tool
I haven’t had an iPad in a long time. I think having one with a Bluetooth keyboard would be good if it has gotten better with Accessibility. For example, as far as I know, there is no good way to deal with anything but a very rudimentary PDF document on Apple products.. Got links. Nothing. Have to read a table? Can’t do it. I don’t know how word and XL would work, but I sure wouldn’t do it without a keyboard. I thought Apple had instituted some kind of find future equivalent to what we’ve been able to do in windows for years with screen readers. But I might be wrong. I thought they had done it for the Mac with voiceover but that would’ve carried over to the iPad. But since my only Apple products these days are an iPhone and watch, I’m not in a position to make definitive statements. Hi Joe, I do have an iPad and enjoy it, but there are still some things I find much easier to do on a PC. You can navigate by headings in a browser, but I know of no way to do this without using the rotor. I also am a heavy user of the Find feature with JAWS on web pages and am not aware of an equivalent in IOS. I would love to be proven wrong on this. I also need to use Excel and Word quite a lot, which I find much easier on the PC. So it really depends on what you want to use it for, in my opinion. Hi Joe; I’ve been using iOS products and Mac products since 2015. I’ve never went back to windows for any reason. Just pick up the iOS and Mac products and don’t look back. When I want to edit an app I bring it into notes. I do it by hand. And you certainly can jump from heading to heading with a Bluetooth keyboard. Hope this helps. I'd like to check this out. I'll be trying on my iPhone, but in Windows 7 with IE8 and JAWS 15, I get to the page, find the Play/Pause button, but nothing happens when I hit either Spacebar or Enter. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Robert Carter Sent: Saturday, December 21, 2013 8:20 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: utility of an iPad as a productivity tool Hi, I love Jazz and recently discovered that one of my favorite Jazz radio programs has a live stream through Stanford University. Having the new Radium App which allows access to XM content is wonderful. And I'm really impressed with the battery life. Last Sunday, I had charged our unit in the morning. My wife used it for a while before I took it over for the afternoon football games. I'm guessing when I started using it, the battery level may have been at around 98%. I had the unit running non-stop for 4 hours, I made no adjustments in settings to conserve battery life, VO was running. I checked the battery after 4 hours of continuous use, and it was at 88%. As it ran down about 2 to 3% per hour,I'd say this is really outstanding. The unit was in a locked state, so perhaps that helped. Re: utility of an iPad as a productivity tool
Hi Robert, When we purchased an iPad for my wife, I really didn't plan to use it that much. We got the new iPad Mini. Like you, I now love listening to audio, anything from music to radio streams, books and sporting events. I discovered that I really enjoyed working with email and safari on the larger screen. In mail, for example, all of the mailboxes are listed along the left side of the screen. You can simply run your finger down the mailbox column and double-tap on the mailbox that you want to open. Of course, I can work fine with email on my iPhone but this layout on the iPad is nice for both sighted and blind users. I also found that listening to audio on the ipad's built-in speakers was nicer than the iPhone's speaker. Again, I can hear audio just fine on the iPhone but given a choice of listening to a book or sports broadcast on either, I would choose the iPad. Also, it is really nice to have two iOS devices so that when the battery runs low on one, you can grab the other device and keep on working. I ended up liking the iPad enough that when the new much faster and thinner iPad Air came out, I gave the iPad 3 back to my department and purchased the iPad Air. I do agree that having both an iPhone and an iPad is a luxury. If I could only afford one, I would choose the iPhone. Having them both is certainly the best of all for me. Hi, I love Jazz and recently discovered that one of my favorite Jazz radio programs has a live stream through Stanford University. I do not use Adobe flash on my Mac and this stream would not play on the Mac. The stream plays great, however, on my iPad. For anyone who cares, the show is called River Walk Jazz. http://riverwalkjazz.stanford.edu Robert Carter Sent from my iPad On Dec 21, 2013, at 7:55 AM, Les Kriegler kriegle...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Robert, When we purchased an iPad for my wife, I really didn't plan to use it that much. Re: utility of an iPad as a productivity tool
I recently bought a refurbished ipad mini and really like it for the following reasons. The speakers in it sound so much better than the speaker in my ipod touch 5th generation. With it's larger battery, I get a lot of extra playtime over my ipod touch 5th generation. I mainly use it as my main reading device. -Original Message- From: Joe Sent: Friday, December 20, 2013 8:21 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: utility of an iPad as a productivity tool For a visually impaired person, perhaps.
