iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-15 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I am currently on an iphone 6S and want to upgrade my phone, as I have noticed
performance issues since moving to IOS 13 and I want to be able to start using
the Way Around tags. With an $80 trade-in value, I'm debating between the
iphoen which I can get new for $369 from Apple or the iPhone XR for $519. Is
the iphone XR a good model? The main reason I was thinking of spending a bit
more is to stave off any planned obsolescence of the 8, but my budget would
prefer the iphone 8. I can also see that the screen size is a bit bigger on
the XR at 6.1 inches. I really rely mainly on VoiceOver, so the screen
clarity isn't that important, nor is the fancy camera, other than OCR
capability. Yeah, battery life is nice, but I've managed fine with my 6S and a
portable battery pack for the rare occasion I need extra power on the go. Yes,
I prefer finger print reader to the idea of face ID, but I'm sure I'd adjust.

With Apple stores closed, I cannot get my hands on samples and the sales guy at
Verizon was really pushy, trying to shame me out of anything but the newest
model. So, hoping a coupld of you smart people wouldn't mind telling me your
thoughts for budget conscious shoppers. My biggest fear is getting an iphone 8
and having similar performance issues to what I have now where, even with four
bars of cell service, my emails and web pages take super long to load.

RE: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Always better to go to a newer model if you can afford it and while the iPhone
8 is a good model, the XR also was a very successful and well-liked phone.
If you are somebody who uses their phone for as long as possible which I assume
is the case since you still have your 6S, I would say it’s probably worthwhile
to spend the extra $150 and get the Xr.

For long life coverage,
Go the XR
They are a very similar phone in most ways although the processor in the XR is
the year later I believe.

But either way both the 8 and the xr should be around / supported for another
couple of years yet,

And ask your Verizon sales person why you should get the latest when the 8 or
the XR would be very suitable for a person with a visual impairment

Hi Robin,

In my personal opinion, if you can wait then wait till the launch for
iphone SE 2. It was suppose to be launched in March but,
due to Corona virus the launch has been delayed but with in the next month
or so Apple will launch it.

I never had one problem with no Home Button. I put in my own facial ID, as,
somehow, the guy at Wal-Mart could not. I think if you get it down in your mind
that on opening your phone, place finger on bottom of the screen, move up to
the first bop, you're there, second is Ap Switcher. Then you can do the same
from the top, and first stop is Control Center and second is Notifications. My
husband just knew I'd have some kind of learning curve or something, as he does
seem to be rather lost looking at the thing. Sometimes, we talk ourselves into
that something is really hard, like some people are about math. I said math
now, didn't say anything about algebra, LOL.

RE: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would say they are hugely different since the XR has no home button and uses
Facetime for authentication and the iPhone 8 still uses the virtual home button
with Touch Id.
This means you have to learn and get used to the gestures which replace single
and double pressing the home button.

Subject: iphone 8 or XR?

Hi,
I am currently on an iphone 6S and want to upgrade my phone, as I have noticed
performance issues since moving to IOS 13 and I want to be able to start using
the Way Around tags. With an $80 trade-in value, I’m debating between the
iphoen which I can get new for $369 from Apple or the iPhone XR for $519. Is
the iphone XR a good model? The main reason I was thinking of spending a bit
more is to stave off any planned obsolescence of the 8, but my budget would
prefer the iphone 8. I can also see that the screen size is a bit bigger on
the XR at 6.1 inches. I really rely mainly on VoiceOver, so the screen
clarity isn’t that important, nor is the fancy camera, other than OCR
capability. Yeah, battery life is nice, but I’ve managed fine with my 6S and a
portable battery pack for the rare occasion I need extra power on the go. Yes,
I prefer finger print reader to the idea of face ID, but I’m sure I’d adjust.

With Apple stores closed, I cannot get my hands on samples and the sales guy at
Verizon was really pushy, trying to shame me out of anything but the newest
model. So, hoping a coupld of you smart people wouldn’t mind telling me your
thoughts for budget conscious shoppers. My biggest fear is getting an iphone 8
and having similar performance issues to what I have now where, even with four
bars of cell service, my emails and web pages take super long to load.

Getting used to the large screen and no home button took about 2 minutes.
I really loved Touch ID and I was a bit skeptic.
However, Face ID is simply brilliant.

RE: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Touch Id may let you unlock the phone while it's in your pocket or in a
belt holster, but it's different strokes for different folks. I live in
northern Canada and I'd love to have Facetime since then I wouldn't have to
take off my gloves every time I'm outside and want to unlock my phone and for
us up here that is probably about 5 months out of the year. Then there are the
times when I spend more time in my woodworking shop and when Touch Id simply
won't work because either my fingers have too many cut and cracks in them or
they are full of glue which even when properly removed usually messes up Touch
Id for a few days.

Re: iphone 8 or XR?

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Sieghard

I was so happy to get a face recognition iPhone for exactly those
reasons. Though my Vermont weather isn’t as bad, the wood working and hard use
of my hands in projects caused my finger print reader to rarely work. I was
often redoing it so it would work for a little while.

I have found that I can be subtle when opening my iPhone. As all it
has to do is sort of see my face and it clicks on. I have it on the setting
that doesn’t require eye contact.

Now if only my talking tape measure and audible level could be controlled by my
voice that would be great!

Is there a email list for blind wood workers out there!
Or, maybe those working on vintage cars?

One more related thing. I did struggle a little to learn the gestures that
replace the home key. I was trying to do them from a podcast description. It
took me some practice and I did have some frustration. But, now I prefer the
gestures and miss them when using older iPhones.

Hi Sieghard

I was so happy to get a face recognition iPhone for exactly those reasons.
Though my Vermont weather isn’t as bad, the wood working and hard use of my
hands in projects caused my finger print reader to rarely work. I was often
redoing it so it would work for a little while.

I have found that I can be subtle when opening my iPhone. As all it has to
do is sort of see my face and it clicks on. I have it on the setting that
doesn’t require eye contact.

Now if only my talking tape measure and audible level could be controlled by
my voice that would be great!

Is there a email list for blind wood workers out there!
Or, maybe those working on vintage cars?

One more related thing. I did struggle a little to learn the gestures that
replace the home key. I was trying to do them from a podcast description.
It took me some practice and I did have some frustration. But, now I prefer
the gestures and miss them when using older iPhones.

And from what I've heard from someone that worked in Canada as a fireman
Taking your gloves off in the cold, isn't really a good idea.

I have to admit I had trouble when I cut myself trying to open a phone with
touch id,

Can't think how bad it is for you after you've been working in the workshop.

I recently went from iPhone 7 to XR.
Getting used to the large screen and no home button took about 2 minutes.
I really loved Touch ID and I was a bit skeptic.
However, Face ID is simply brilliant.

When I had fingerprint ID, I used my thumb. I figured it was the least likely
to get a nick or something causing a problem.

Yes,

I set up my thumb, a finger on my right hand and one on my left. But
results were very poor. But than again When I needed a background check for
my last job I could not get usable fingerprints. I went back 5 times. Finally
they gave me special status as I had no usable fingerprints. This was from
many months of hands on construction on my home restoration.

I liked the idea of the finger print but Face ID is working much better for me.

I’m now having similar finger print problems on my Mac. I got it working again
but then once I started some outdoor projects my hands got rough and it sopped
working.

Here is hoping for Face ID for my Mac! Or for using my iPhone to confirm
identity on my Mac!

Best,

Eric Caron
