I think, what we need to consider also the processor of such device.
Yes, you can get an ipad2, or ipad mini 1st gen, but you are
compromising the processor speed. Of course, some would argue that if
the main concern you have for an ipad is to browsing the net,
streaming video and perhaps read a book or two, might not matter. But,
the reality is this, in the long run, it matters as most apps will
going to need more processor and power to run, not to mention the
ability to run the latest OS smoothly.

I bought a Nexis 7 Android tablet to go along with my iPhone last 
summer. I like having the two devices. There are some things I just like 
doing better on the Nexis 7, in part due to the fact that it's running 
Android and in part due to the fact that it's larger and has a larger 
display. I also find it convenient to have the tablet downstairs in the 
living room while my iPhone may float around a bit more. I tend to 
segregate what I do on each device somewhat, e.g. I generally use my 
Nexis 7 for media, playing music, watching Netflix and so on. One of the 
reasons I got the Nexis 7 instead of an iPad was to play with Android 
and the fact that you can get them much cheaper than you can get an iPad.


I do understand the single device desire though. Around the house, I'll 
use my Booksense, my Android tablet and my laptop, but when I leave for 
the day or on a trip then I just take my iPhone. Whether you want to 
consolidate everything into one device or use multiple devices is a 
personal decision and there are no right or wrong answers here.

have the retina display.

At least, as far as I know, which is why I say check with others and do
your own research into the features you want.

In my opinion, there isn't much point in buying a new device with the
slower processor as things are going in the direction of putting more
and more demands on the processor capability of these devices.

I have iPhone, iPad and Mac. And an old machine that is running linux. No 
Windows at present but have had that too. I like everything I have, but I 
understand the issue of not accumulating possessions. If that's your priority, 
maybe you should just get a newer phone with more storage. If I had to only 
have two things, it would be my iPad that I would eliminate though I wouldn't 
want to get rid of it. If I really could do everything I needed to do without a 
computer and wanted to get down to one item, I'd keep my phone. It isn't that 
there aren't some nice things about an iPad vs a phone but if I really was 
going to choose only one, it would be the phone. Now, if an iPad were also a 
phone device, it might be a harder decision to make.

retina display is the term Apple uses for their displays with 
particularly high pixel density. I used Google and found this

In general terms, it has to do with the resolution of the screen. More 
megapixels, clarity sharpness, etc. Irrelevant if you can’t see.
