RE: error compiling VNC with X.org 6.8.2

2005-05-11 Thread James Weatherall
Andreas,

The module is normally built by the XFree86/VNC build process, on platforms
that can support dynamically loaded modules.

Hmmm, you mean, if I want to monitor an existing X session, I have to
use the x0vncserver? And I think I read something with a module that
might be loaded from an existing X server.

If it's only the module, I want to compile do I have to a) compile and
install X, b) patch the just installed X with the vnc patches, and c)
compile and install only the new vnc module?

Hmmm, looks like I have to re-read the documentation.

Andreas,

Xvnc is a stand-alone, virtual X server, viewable only via VNC. It's not a
replacement for your existing X server.

Well, definitely not the effect I expected. With the patches, no hardware
dependent part has been compiled or installed, so I was not able to get
X running on my mac. I guess, I have to check all the patches for
changes that I don't need/want.

But just to make check again, VNC compiles into X, I don't have to
install X and compile it again (2nd time with VNC) to have some vnc-X
modules. It should be possible to compile X once (with VNC) and install
it once (with VNC) on a fresh system. Is this correct?

Thanks for the help so far,

Andreas,

I assume that these patches fix the problem, since they're the only patches
I can find that Tim has posted and the post states that they fix his
problems building the old VNC 4.0 beta code with Xorg 6.x.

Tim, are these the patches you meant?

All I get is '[2004-05-31] [patch] X.org foundation X11R6.7.0'. Is this

Well, I guess, I have missed it, as it does not sound like a solution to

RE: error compiling VNC with X.org 6.8.2

2005-05-10 Thread James Weatherall
Andreas,

At a casual glance, it looks like there is a new extension (XFree86VidMode
or something like that), which is a hardware-related extension and therefore
won't be built into Xvnc, but which some other part of Xorg is expecting
will always be there.

Have a look at the build rules for Xvfb, which is, like Xvnc, not a
hardware-based X server, and so may have the relevant build definitions that
you can copy to the Xvnc build settings to fix the problem.

Cheers,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.
