Re: Self-introduction and Area of Interest

2023-02-24 Thread Keith N. McKenna
Greetings Keren;

First let me sat that your curricula vitae is very impressive, and your
interest in technical writing comes at a most opportune time. We are currently
in the process of updating our user documentation and a person with your
background would be a wonderful addition to the documentation team.

We use Writer, the word processor module of Apache OpenOffice (AOO) along with
other modules as needed to create the documentation files, and GitHub/Gitbox
for version control.

The process is an iterative one. Writer is able to track changes. The first
person sets the track changes on, makes the necessary changes, then sends the
changed file back to the online repository. A second person pulls the changed
file to their local copy of the repository and reviews the changes and either
accepts or rejects them as well making additional changes and adds any
comments that may be needed and sends it back to the online repository. This
process iterates until their is agreement that the file is ready to publish.

If this is something that you would like to pursue then I would suggest that
you subscribe to the documentation mailing list by sending a blank e-mail to
doc-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org. You will receive an e-mail back from the
list management software; be sure to check your spam folder as well as some
mail clients will mark them as spam. Just reply to that message and you will
get a mail back, which may end up in spam as well, saying that you are
subscribed.

Also with your permission I will forward your introduction mail to the doc@
list.

Another task you may be interested in is translating the software into
Chinese. We have both variants in our translation software.

Regards
Keith

Self-introduction and Area of Interest

2023-02-23 Thread K C
Dear team,

I am currently working as a teacher of English in one of the A-level
schools in Shanghai, China. After I obtained my master degree in
Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a top
50 university in the QS World University Rankings, I decided to become an
educator since I believe as one of the most noble occupations, it can
greatly contribute to human and social development as a whole. I’ve been
teaching ESL courses and Standardized Language Tests such as IELTS and
TOEFL for about ten years, during which I’ve marked tons of students’
writing pieces and helped them achieve a satisfactory score in the writing
part of their tests.

I heard about the role of technical writer for the first time from one of
my friends from graduate school. Her description of the job made it sound
really interesting. She also recommended the Apache OpenOffice Project to
me, saying it is a friendly community where anyone who is interested in
technical writing can get an easy start. As a technophile, I am
enthusiastic about knowing every new release and update on technology
products. So I think maybe I can combine my interest, expertise and
experiences together to seek more personal development.

When I found out about your volunteer project, I considered it might be a
good way for me to get started and be actively engaged. I am looking
forward to your further reply to see how I can contribute to the community.

Kind regards,

Keren

Greetings Piring, and Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice community. We use
mailing lists for communication and strongly suggest that you subscribe to
those that interest you. Subscribing to the lists will avoid the delay of

Welcome Jensy to the OpenOffice Project,

Any help is appreciated no matter so small.

I recommend to subscribe to the doc mailing list and maybe if you want
to follow the project beyond documentation the dev mailing list.

I have no overview what the documentation is doing currently. So I am
not able to give further pointers. If you have any questions or need
help just write to volunteer mailing list.

2022-04-25 Thread Peter Kovacs

Hi alejandro,

Yes the list block is on purpose. If you want to help this is great. But
we are not able to finance you.

In order to contribute I would subscribe to dev mailinglist instead of
volunteer or recruitment.

Next step is to make familiar with where we need help. We have in
general 4 branches where we need volunteers.

1) documentation of the software - requires writing skills

2) translation libraries - requires to know english and some language
you want to translate too. (The translation is done in a web tool named
pootle)

3) web development / maintaining our web infrastructure - you may need
php skills here, and we look into containerization
4) maintaining Apache OpenOffice itself - you need programming skills.
Depending on which bug you tackle C, C++, perl, python, java, assembler
skills are asked for.

In order to set you up, Which line does interest you? If you do not have
the skills you need to build them, but you would still be able to help.
It is just harder for you ;)

All the best

Peter

program. My name is Alejandro Trombetta, I am currently studying free software
at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have more
than 10 years of experience in it. I really want to be part of the different

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the interest in OpenOffice.

If you are interested in contributing, I suggest to start step by step.

I think the best way is to familiarize with our setup. We offer a github
[1] presence which makes it easy to access.

Try to sync the code from there. to your system.

And as a next step try to understand how to build OpenOffice from source.

I recommend our wiki guide [2] and Arrigos presentation [3] for starters.

If you have questions or need help please ask.

All the best

Peter

Re: Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module

2021-06-26 Thread Peter Kovacs

Hi Dineth,

We have following issues we need to look at (without poriorization, they
are in some aspect all important):

# Fixing bugs

- Here we have especially a short coming on windows.

- We a have a special bugger code that leads to destroy files.

# Update to ODF 1.3 Std.

# Update SDKs for Windows

# Windows 64 Bit

# Move Code to Apple Silicon, and look at Rasperry pie version (Main
issue is here a piece of code which looks at ABI code)

# replace make file (dmake, gmake with SCON approach)

# update dependencies.

# update code to c++11 standard (we need a strategy here, so that is a
bit complicated topic)

# integrate diverse patches (they need to be checked, too).

# testing and reviewing Pull request on github.

My recommendation is to look at the build process and understanding that
first. at least a little. If you have Windows get in touch with dev -
Mailing list and ask for help since you need a outdated SDK.

If you have more questions I can go into details. OpenOffice is a huge,
long living code base. It takes some effort to get into the whole code.

All the best

Peter

I am a licensed architect with 35 years of experience. I am currently working

opensource alternatives to anything Microsoft. Their business model, in my
mind, is immoral.

Thank you for this opportunity to help.

My name is Fabio Siska, I am from Leimen, Germany and I'd like to learn more
about software and development, as I haven't had much to do with it so far
(except writing a few macros in Excel VBA or creating a medium sized
database with Access and VBA).

I am mainly interested in bug reports, feature lists, tutorials, templates,
marketing through tutorials and templates and later on Quality assurance.
Besides German as my native language I speak English very well. I would like
to support the spreading of OpenOffice in general, but especially in the
German speaking countries, by creating tutorials and practical, high quality
templates.

That's it from my side for now. I'm glad to be on board with you and look
forward to a fruitful cooperation. Cheers! :-)
