[Vserver] How to setup FSS?

2006-01-05 Thread Wilhelm Meier
Hello,

how do I setup fair share scheduling? I've read
http://linux-vserver.org/Scheduler+Parameters
and I understand, that if all contexts have running processes, the
fillrate/fillinterval gives the "share" of cpu capacity the context gets
(roughly, if you neglect the effect of the other parameters). But what
happens, if only one context has running processes. Is this context then able
to use the rest of cpu capacity, or is it waiting ?

This is I think a "synthetic vservers" concept application. Tools for that are
distributed in the latest Jacques GĂ©linas' version of vserver userspace tools
available on http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/miscprj/s_context.hc?prjstate=1&nodoc=1

You can get a summary of the "synthetic vservers" technology on
http://www.solucorp.qc.ca/changes.hc?projet=vserver&version=0.40 in the "New
vservers commands".

By the way, Jacques' userspace vserver tools work perfectly with the latest
2.6-based ctx kernels, should anyone prefer the original 2.4 vserver management
style (I know I do!)

[Vserver] [Arch] powerpc aka. ppc64

2006-01-05 Thread Herbert Poetzl

Thanks to the Debian Folks (espeically Bastian Blank)
for providing a quad Power5 test machine!

initial power support looks good so far, but could
only be tested with 32bit userspace (yet), which
seems to work quite fine after a few adjustments.

enjoy,
Herbert

well, they are for linux 2.4 and the quota patches, so
on linux 2.6 you can use them to turn quota on and off
but that's it ...

in your case, it just means that you have to set and
maitnain the quota on the host, and let the guests
suffer from the limitations :)

but let me know if you are interested in per-context
quota for 2.6, if there is a certain demand, I will
implement it ...

depending on the packaging system (or the lack of)
the unionfs might be the easier (maintainability
wise) approach (in your particular case)

in a unification setup you would have to install
the updates in all guests, and re-unify them again
nevertheless the listed advantages still apply.

consider unification like hardlinks, with a twist
the stable release makes them immutable but still
unlinkable (for updates), the devel release adds
CoW (Copy on Write) link breaking, which makes them
as flexible as normal files ...

As i said, i'm new to vservers on linux... bsd jails i know with unionfs

I was thinking of keeping all the core packages on the host in ro mode
and only install particular packages based on necesity.

This ideea is best described by slax livecd.

I'm always open to new and better ideas, so, any links are welcome.

On this machine it's 2.6.14.2p4smp.21 :) it is mostly 2.6.14.2 with vs
2.1.0-rc8 and the procfs fix. Other machines are running either the

I found the testcq.sh script and after a bit of path tweaking I got
them to succeed on ext2, ext3 and reiserfs (that's more than I
actually care about currently) and I got to learn the invocation of
mqon/mqoff in the process but I am still at a loss wrt. the actual

Do I pass the path to /vservers/aquota.* or /vservers/*/aquota.*?

Do I use the real device (/dev/hda6 in my case) or /dev/vroot0?

Do I need a separate vroot for every vserver?

etc etc ;)

How do I even use it afterwards? What should be the expected outcome?

the problem with linux quotas (something which per-context
quotas solve) is, that the quota files reside in only one
location, the root of the associated filesystem

the consequence is that you have to manage them there, i.e.
on the host, outside of all guests ...

they will be shown with quota and other tools which do not
look into those files, but query the kernel instead ...

memory limits come in different flavours and
types (currently only hard limits are implemented)

virtual memory: VM, VML

[Vserver] Vservers and quotas

2006-01-05 Thread Grzegorz Nosek
Hello all,

I have a basic question regarding quota usage with vservers. My
scenario is more or less like this:

 - I have xid tagging enabled (UID24/GID24)

 - vserver with e.g. xid= has users with uids in range 000 -
999 (and several system ones but these need no quotas)

 - I'm not interested (at the moment at least) in per-context quotas,
only per-user ones

 - I need to manage the per-user quotas from within the vservers
(preferably, only the specified users should be available - their
files will be always created from within the vserver too so xid
tagging is an option)

 - I don't need quotas on the host

My question is: where do I configure the quotas? The host? The
vservers individually? Both?

Best regards,
 Grzegorz Nosek

I used:
(I only tested new patch-2.6.15-rc7-vs2.1.0.1.diff
but there are also patch-2.6.15-rc7-vs2.1.0.diff and stable
patch-2.6.15-rc7-vs2.0.1.diff)

Hth,
Joel

PS: rc7 was enough close to final release to apply one of those patch cleanly
;-)

Joel is running HP, pa-risc - I think he built his own patches for testing.
No clue about other hardware systems.

[Vserver] 2.6.15 Vserver patchs

2006-01-05 Thread Mike O'Connor
Hi All

patch's for 2.6.15 kernel.

Where would I down load these patch's

I would like to test it as the 2.6.15 kernels are the first 2.6 series
which support smart via libata.

Thanks

The most simple solution is to bind-mount an apropiate file, but if there
are many "virtualized" entries, this would get messy.
