Re: Mac OS 10.1.1 available

2001-11-15 Thread Andrew Nielsen
You'll find that while it's downloading the update, it stores the
.tar file in a randomly named hierarchy of folders in your home
directory, then _as soon as_ the download is completed, it moves it
and starts the install, then deletes it afterwards.

Of course, if you're connecting to the Internet via a proxy server
and watch the log, you can spot the URL for the package, then stop
the Software Update control panel from proceeding, and download the
package independently using a web browser so that you can use it on
other computers without re-downloading it.

The URL which MacFixIt posted was probably one to an Akamai server,
and you'll probably find that those URLs change constantly as Akamai
shuffles their content around dynamically. They're not required to
provide fixed URLs :-)

In the interests of customer service, however, I believe Apple would
do well to EITHER:
(a) provide URLs for these updates immediately they are released via
the Software Update mechanism, OR;
(b) provide a checkbox in the Software Update control panel to allow
the user to request that the updates be stored after download.

Consider an environment where there are 100 computers, all of whom
need updating. Imagine the congestion on their shared Internet
connection as they all try downloading the update independently. It
would be far preferable to allow the local support person to download
the update once and then install it as required. Or have a mechanism
whereby the updates could be locally cached. I don't know that squid
will cache it effectively because I am not certain the URL for the
Akamai download is necessarily identical for all computers requesting
it from the one organisation. Maybe someone who's got the time to
spare could do some testing on that.

Curiosity was the compelling motive on my part. I must admit my
curiosity in this case hasn't really been satisfied. Can't see any
obvious differences. I guess my main interest was in the fact that
10.1.1 had updates to the Mail app. Can't say I can see any difference

Replacing a HD in Blueberry iMac

2001-11-15 Thread Boxer
Hi there,

I have a blueberry iMac 350Mhz with USB only. It currently has a 6 or 7GB HD
in it that is dying a very slow death. I am assuming it is an ATA33 or 66
IDE 5400 RPM, pretty sure it's a quantum.

If I were to replace that hard drive as it is dying, with a ATA 100 running
at 7200rpm would there be any ramifications to any componentry inside the
machine?

ie. There is no fan, would a 7200 rpm drive create greater heat? If it is a
ATA 33 or 66 bus is there are problem installing an ATA 100 or is it just
not possible. Here are my choices, please comment on the most
appropriate/possible.

ATA 66 5400Rpm
ATA 66 7200rpm
ATA 100 7200rpm

Obviously the latter two are the most readily available.

Thanks,

GC

atm 4.6 deluxe

2001-11-15 Thread Craig Chappelle

Y'all

I recently learned the hard way, that any version of ATM earlier than
4.6 is not compatible with OS9.1 ... however, the 'lite' packaged
version of 4.6 is of little use to me, cos I need to use and manage a
lot of fonts, and like to have more control than the lite version
offers. So to my question/s:

The only upgrade to 4.6 deluxe I cd find on the Adobe site was from
4.5. Can I instal it safely, by simply running the installer and
letting it replace my existing 4.6 lite version? More to the point,
will it cause any dramas, given that I'm not actually upgrading from
an earlier version?

Scroll to the bottom for Version 2.13 update.

What is the rush to download 10.1.1 ??

This has been appropriately addressed by others on this list ;-)

Does anyone know what it does yet or is this another it must be better
 syndrome ?

From the Read Me:

The 10.1.1 update delivers improvements for many USB and FireWire devices,
including support for additional digital cameras, and overall improvements
to CD and DVD burning. Enhancements have been made to AFP, SMB, and WebDAV
networking, as well as improved support for printing. This update also
delivers better application compatibility, including updates to the Finder
and Mail application. In addition, hardware accelerated video mirroring has
been enabled for the new PowerBook G4.

Not bad for an dot-dot-one release :-)

I noticed the convoluted URL provided, also - nice to have a single click to
get there. Given that everything is powered by WebObjects these days, it's
one of many that will work.

The Knowledgebase itself http://kbase.info.apple.com copped some flack in
its initial release - it was not only new, but different. It's now version
2.5, we've been listening, and it's certainly worth checking out if you
haven't for a while.

Searching the Knowledgebase for 10.1.1 reveals this as the first option:

Mac OS X Update 10.1.1: Information and Download
This article contains the Mac OS X Update v 10.1.1 document and a link to
the Mac OS X Update 10.1.1 download.
100%   Last Modified November 14, 2001    Article Number 120080

A couple of clicks and 14mb later, you too can have a persistent monolithic
updater.

Cheers!

L.

Re: Mac OS 10.1.1 available

2001-11-15 Thread Matt Huitson
After unsuccessfully trying to install 10.1.1 through Software Update I
was pleased to see versiontracker provide a direct link to a compressed
.dmg. I downloaded and installed this version and I now have a copy of
the .dmg for my backups. FWIW, I did have some trouble with the install
process in that the 10.1.1 installer refused to recognise my OSX
partition (it was greyed out) . I had to download and install the
Security Update and Installer Update (in that order) before the 10.1.1
installer would recognise my OSX partition. Reports of this problem can
be found at macfixit and apple knowledge base and appear to be
independent of the .dmg available through versiontracker.

Matt.

I presume you are booting from a MacOS 8.6 CD? If so, I can't really see
what the problem might be. Drive Setup will not (or should not) work on
the startup volume, so you pretty much have to boot from a CD if you
have only one partition, and of course the CD must have a copy of Drive

No, no, no.

The fix for an LCD screen with dead pixels is to replace it, that is why
you can only get it 'fixed' when the dead pixels meet the criteria set by
