Secure connections

2002-02-11 Thread FRANK BIUNDO
Hello all

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I am having all of a
sudden connecting to secure sites like Bank Sites.

I am getting a message that reads

"Unable to establish secure connection to ...com.au.There is a
problem with the security certificate for that site.(The identity
certificate is not yet valid).
The information you view and send will be readable to others while in
transit, and it may not go to the intended party".

I am on OS 9.04 with I.Explorer 5.0 when the problem first appeared.I
upgraded to I.Explorer 5.1 but the problem is there.

Any help with this would be most appreciated.

It really depends on the web cam you're trying to view - they all
work quite differently. Can you send the URL you're trying to view or
is it a camera you've bought, if so, what brand/model etc?

I guess one thing it did highlight, indirectly, are the problems related to

They're unlikely to highlight that too strongly, being nineMSN (ie

That's Ray Martin for you! ;-)

What I found was 'interesting' was their use of the other guy's web cam.
When played back (in real time streaming) in front of Ray Martin, it was in
full motion. Now they must have had an awfully fast connection for that to
happen (at both ends)!

May be it was just scare mongering tactics for people to buy more
anti-everything-bad software.

I guess one thing it did highlight, indirectly, are the problems related to
having no real competition to Microsoft. Considering their 'lacksy-daisy'
approach to system security, I am not surprised it happens so often.

USB - PS/2 adaptor

2002-02-11 Thread Matt Huitson
I was wondering whether anyone knows of a driver for OSX (10.1.2) which
might allow a PC PS/2 mouse to be connected to my Pismo via a newish
PS/2-USB adaptor I picked up from work? Unfortunately no idea what
brand the adaptor is - black USB plug, grey cable, purple PS/2 plug, if
that helps - and was most likely purchased for use with a PC. I tried
USB Overdrive X 10.0.0b2 without success, and a search for similar
adaptor products failed to find an OSX driver (or indeed the exact
adaptor itself). Is this setup even possible?

Pismo (500, 384Meg, 10.1.2)

Cheers, Matt.

CommPost: RAM discounts

2002-02-11 Thread Zytech Exclusive Offer
This week we have another RAM special -

512MB RAM modules for PowerBook G3 Pismo (FireWire) at $389.

The web price on these modules is $463 so you save $74 per module.
(Limited numbers only.) When ordering just insert "WAMUG special" in
the special comments field and you will only be billed $389. You'll see
below that RAM pricing is still trending upwards!
http://www.zytech.com.au/memory/index.html

A reminder about our $599 February FireWire sale -
80GB FireCube (Barracuda) external FireWire hard drive
30GB FireStar portable 2.5" FireWire hard drive
32x LaCie FireWire/USB burner

The new 32x LaCie burners started shipping last week. One of the lucky
recipients was my son Scott who had this to say about the burner -
The LaCie burner is excellent - most CDs take 40sec. OSX Toast converts
mp3s to AIFF on the fly which means it takes less than 3min to burn a
complete CD from Mp3s it used to take over 30min to encode etc.
It's awsome

On the RAM front here is some commentary from our suppliers -

"Concerns that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Micron Technology Inc. and
Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the DRAM makers focusing on the contract
market, will fall short of DRAM chip supply to their customers in
February, have been confirmed. Given the strain on supply, Samsung and
its peers reached an agreement with their customers to scale up the
128MB SDRAM contract price, a rise of between 20 percent and 30
percent.

This rise stirred up the value of the DRAM spot price again. However,
the appreciation was not as strong as had been expected, probably
because retailers unloaded their inventories onto the spot market for
cash needed ahead of the long Lunar New Year holidays.

The DRAM spot price is likely to continue to rise, as the world's
leading computer companies, including Compaq Computer, Dell Computer
and IBM, are having a problem acquiring sufficient DRAM chips on the
contract market. They are actively searching for DRAM chips and memory
modules on the spot market.

A chipmaker said that it was not clear that the real demand for DRAM
chips justified these frantic purchases by leading computer companies.
Nevertheless, their behavior has guaranteed that DRAM demand will
exceed supply in the first quarter, resulting in a gradual rise in
prices. Anticipating this development, some DRAM chipmakers have
started to slow the pace of delivery in the hope of exploiting higher
unit prices in February, thereby bringing them faster to the break-even
point."

Re: Mac to PC + Re: MP3 CD's

2002-02-11 Thread Mark Secker

Old threads I know (was away from computer)... But...

Mac to PC
At the risk of fits of laughter from the computer
intelligentsia*... if you're only after bouncing a few files then
maybe try web sharing a folder on each computer (you'll still need to
config TCP/IP stuff) - takes about three steps on a mac and a only a
little more effort in XP. - you'll need to do it on both machines
if you want to transfer the files back and forth rather than just one
way.

Don't set up a home page or a index file in the web folders so that
when you punch in the other machines IP number** you get the hosts
web folder directory listing in your browser, then use the right
mouse button on the mac and PC(or option click on the mac if you
haven't binned your apple mouse for a "real" mouse) to select the
option to save the file - this down loads it to your web clients
hard disk

MP3 CD's.
as stated ISO 9660 is the "industry standard" though hybrid CD
format MAY work in some DVD players (? haven't tried it yet in a DVD
player) but its's generally best to keep to the lowest common
denominator.

My friends and I have noticed that some players like to have a
shallow folder/file structure but other players don't mind deeply
nested folders. Again when you burn probably best if you keep to the
lowest common denominator and keep as shallow a directory structure
as possible with maybe just the artist or album folders at the root
level.

Best to read the specs in the DVD players manual too ;)

* HTTP or web sharing is technically less efficient bandwidth wise
than FTP and many other file sharing processes but vastly easier to
set up. - however I find people who pontificate on this point tent to
belive that the only real operating systems use a command line...
only... and on TeliText terminals***) ;)

** if you want to be a real hero then set up your own private IP
network complete with a DNS server (your XP box will do this - so
should OSX [somehow?]) so you can use names instead of IP numbers but
that defeats the Q&Dapproach .

Here's a starting point:

http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2002/02/01/applescript_macosx.html

It contains a sample script for launching a unix application in a
Terminal window.

ignoring application responses
tell application "Terminal"
activate
do script with command ¬
"/Users/brucep/bin/start_tomcat; /usr/local/bin/safe_mysqld &;"
end tell
end ignoring

For example, I replaced the line ""/Users/brucep..." with "telnet " and saved the script as an application. I now have an
AppleScript program that launches Terminal and starts a Telnet session
to the server I specified in .

Unless iCab has changed radically, I believe you can export the favourites
as an HTML file (from either IE or iCab) & them import said html file into
your preffered browser - just keep importing until you got 'em all!

(in IE, import/export is in the file menu, dunno about iCab)
