Roughly the same hardware specs as the base model iMac LCD. Even how much screen real estate is the same (other than the better resolutions on the eMac). Approximately $1000 less - it would severely cannibalise LCD sales. Only massive public reaction would sway Apple to release the machine to consumers, but that would also mean a backflip on their current consumer policy. (I'm not holding my breath!) I know plenty of students who will look at the emac and sy 'stupid name - but it can run maya ... I was planning on swapping all my office imacs (13) with Dells. I 17monitor and box can be got for $18-1900. The flat screens are way too expensive for office machines, but these eMacs look fantastic. Like the apple swivel stand too. ;-) Interesting to note they only use x2 AGP on their GF2mx, and 1280x960? Re: New E Mac
Hmmm, speaking as a Oz consumer, it looks to me like a case of less for more. The optional stand seems a bit of a swizz. Maybe future Mac models will come with an optional power cord too. So, I reckon it appears expensive, but probably is intended to appeal to the cashed up foreign student. No doubt it will have its apologists. Regards, Paul.

For those who are technically minded, would it be feasible to put Bluetooth and Airport on the same card? The thought of having a dongle hanging off the back of a Powerbook is not all that appealing! Yes, you probably could, but then Apple would miss out on selling you two separate items! Plus the Airport cards are rebadged Lucent cards, so Apple would need to get Lucent interested in the idea, which is IMHO unlikely at this stage. A Bluetooth transceiver module costs about $7 in lots of 1000 or so, so it'd probably be cheaper to build BlueTooth into everything and keep the Airport as a configurable option. And besides, I'd want my BlueTooth outside the Titanium case, where it could actually talk to other devices :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer It must be bunnies! Some schools might only want one or two machines with a burner in them. It looks like the airport card is inserted above the CD drive, which is bizarre. I suspect it would take the enterprising student mere seconds to make off with one. And the serial number and ethernet ID are written on the inside of the drive bay door, which I'm sure is likely to get ripped off at some stage! Re: CELLSPACE virus
Either this infects Mac's or somehow it is sending e-mails from a PC using a Mac (or other?) users e-address. Any ideas, knowledge, info on this little lovely? Yes, the latest Klez PC virus fakes its from address using e-mails in the mailboxes of the infected victim. So it can look like the mails come from anyone who has sent mail to the infected person (or even people who haven't, as it also scans for e-mail addresses in web caches). http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.ciac.org/ciac/ciac_virus_info.html Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer It must be bunnies! ADB Mouse
My sister is after a replacement for her old mouse. Telnet
Does anyone know how to make a script to telnet to an IP, authenticate (login / pass) and then reconnect every 8 hours or whenever the connection is lost. Its rather important because its the only thing stopping me from fully using OSX. I had an applescript that did this with ³MacTelnet² in OS9. Cheers. Sorry missed the original - had unsubscribed/resubscribed (what a pain) so going to take a punt as to this being about conecting a powerbook up to a DJ or FoH or home studio mixer. If this is something you're going to do regularly rather than a once off you'd probably be better off investing in a USB to audio converter if nothing else than to avoid damaging fragile mini jack cables and ports as most USB Audio Converters use RCA and/or standard phono some flash ones have cannon balanced/unbalanced inputs. Be aware that most D/A A/D USB devisece won't work properly through standard USB powered hubs so plug them straight in to the USB conector on your mac. Some do digital to analogue (A/D) only so sound out through the usb port to converter to mixer/stereo. Others do both D/A A/D so you can record from a standard stereo line-in source or Hi-Z microphone as well as output to a mixer. There's a lot of sales pitch about better sound quality because the D/ A A/D conversion is done outside the computer so subject to less electrical/electronic noise which may be a bunch of hockum or not as I have not as yet layed my hands on one. They are resonably priced if you are going to use this semi-regularly. I'll get around to getting one soon to do MP3'ing of my old records - mainly to get some white label stuff on to CD. http://www.minidisco.com/minispecs/edirolua3.html ( I want this one) http://www.midiman.net/products/m-audio/quattro.php (total overkill unless your running a semi pro home studio) http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/imic_main.html - use mini audio :( http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/pwrwave.html - use mini audio :(
