I suspect that a re-installation of the software might resolve this,
however, it is possible that the problem is not in the Unstuffing where
you are seeing the error, but in the Stuffing, or even the storage of
the stuffed files. In that case - pardon the pun - you're stuffed.

Also, the current version according to a quick search at
http://www.versiontracker.com/ appears to be 6.5.1 - AFAIK the software
is backward compatible, eg, you can unstuff a v4 archive with a v6
application, but not the other way around.

iDVD and toast titanium 5.1.3

2002-06-05 Thread James Anderson

Hi all,
I read that you can combine two iDVD projects in toast to burn to a
DVD-R. This is a way to overcome the 60min or 90min limit (whatever
it is) on iDVD projects.

but does anyone know how to do it?

I am unable to work it out and can't find any toast manuals which can
help. (or the toast CD for that matter)

if anyone has any ideas could they please help!! because I have a
family video which goes for around 2 hours (it contains speeches and
stuff) and want to put it on DVD. can anyone give me any way to do
this - without using final cut pro or some other expensive program.

cheers
James

Re: 10.1.5 is out!

2002-06-05 Thread crazy_ebot

Hmm, I installed it on a 333mhz (320meg) iMac here at work which I've
been using to test OS X's potential for office use (outside of my own).

The rage pro support is noticeable ... it makes the OS workable on the
little sucker. Caveat: I haven't tried it with classic running; in my
experience classic moderately degrades the performance of any G3
running OSX.

Haven't noticed any difference in performance on the G4/466 at home
that couldn't be attributed to wishful thinking ;)

Don't really mind as the current performace is fine, and so, so
stable. 'Kinda curious to see what perceptible difference Jaguar makes
to my work habits (if any). I'm looking forward to the printing
architecture improvements and possible MS Exchange support, although
I'm not sure how the latter wil be implemented. Anybody got any inside
info?

Ah, to own a quicksilver ... *sigh*

Cheers,

Tobes.

P.S. MS File server browsing seems to finally have been fixed in
10.1.5 ... not more long pauses as you try to scroll through a root
directory *yay!*

No problems so far here. I've put it on my Quicksilver, the wife's iBook and
the housemates Flatscreen iMac and in all cases it went without a hitch.
It's improved multitasking on all machines. I know because I'm always
running rc5 in the terminal on them and all are more responsive even doing
that after the update. Apps launch faster on the Quicksilver and screen
redraws are improved a bit. Still anxiously awaiting Quartz Extreme but this
was a nice little update.

Quicktime 6 - US only?

2002-06-05 Thread crazy_ebot

Hi all,

Before I start mucking around with the QT6 preview, I thought I'd
better check if there are any localisation issues with regards to the
software. Where the downloader says 'US only', they mean 'English
only' yeah? I didn't think/can't find any documentation which mentions
international english versions of quicktime ...

Better to look stupid than sorry, ;-)

Re: Disk damage?

2002-06-05 Thread Paul Weaver
I am running Norton's 5.0.3 with the latest auto downloaded patches. The
machine is running on Sys. 8.6. There is a upgraded version of 8.6
available for downloading from Apple at
http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/11/wa/query?type=id
&val=KC.60283&searchMode=Expert but it is so huge I have been hanging off,
hoping to meet someone who already has it on disk.

The suggestion by another writer to do a full backup and then a reformat of
the HD to map out the bad block seems a valid suggestion. I have put all my
data onto several CDs yesterday in anticipation. The HD is 6 GB which is
pretty small by today's standards I guess. An external HD to take the lot
at once would be handy. What do they cost new? Does anyone rent 'em or
have a cheap second hand one for sale?

The other questions I have is how precarious is it to run with a bad block.

Regards, Paul.

Patience, Grasshopper...

iDisk certainly seems to be quite a bit faster, although not as fast as
I was expecting.

Roll on Jagwire! (Thanks Ashley! :-) )

(Apologies to all those who weren't at last night's meeting - seems

Hello Merv,

My wife had the same problem with Statewest. We use OSX with IE 5.1

I changed the password using Netscape 4.7 in Classic, then went back to OSX
and IE 5.1. This worked fine the first couple of times, then she started
getting "knockbacks" telling her the password or user name are incorrect.
We contacted Statewest and they have no answers ... so she has given up.
My wife is virtually anti-technology so this was something of a triumph for
her (see .. told you computers were useless).

I would be interested to hear how you get on.

I agree completely with all that you have written. I find that of all
the aspects of MacOS X that new users have to deal with, Classic is by
far the most confusing, and not only to new Mac users. People who are
new to the Mac don't really understand why it's necessary, and from
long-time Mac users who are new to MacOS X one of the most frequent
questions I get is: "How can I tell if I'm in MacOS X or MacOS 9?".
Trying to explain the concept that while they are running a Classic app
they are still really running MacOS X has been very difficult at times.
I think life would be much simple for these people if Apple greatly
simplified the Classic launch screen, perhaps with just a simple
progress bar, so users don't see the MacOS 9 splash screen at all. I
would be a lot less confusing.

In truth, I can live with scanner drivers running only in Classic for
the moment, since getting access to the scanned files from X is easy.
Printing is what needs the greatest attention at the moment. I live for
the day when I get all the same functionality in my MacOS X Canon S520
printer driver that I get in the Classic version.

Hi folks,

This Spam business has got worse and worse during the past few months (for
me anyway). I have seriously thought about changing my email address, but
that's almost as bad as changing your postal address ie: the follow up
required is horrendous.

Each time I nominate an email as "junk" it turns up again "wearing a
