i'm just wondering if you have the same trouble as i had during the last
month but in os9, after time consuming tests i found that the modem
negotiates the highest speed possible thus getting unstable..
i tryalled a few different scripts with no usable result, then i
"crackt" a script and blockt off the lines where it want to negotiate
speeds above 42k...result: fare more stable connection
below you see a section of my suprafax script and where you see a
exclamation mark & a space before the comment that means the lines are
comments only..and not executed
good luck and anyway many thank to all who gave comment to "modem
disconnects" 2-3 month ago..James

Monitor recognition solution

2002-09-20 Thread brite
For the archives - I was having trouble with my Quicksilver dual 800 G4, mac OS
10.2 running Final Cut Pro recognising my PAL TV wired in via a Canopus ADVC-

The 10.2.1 upgrade has removed the problem, and seems to have improved
firewire performance overall. My second computer monitor problem has also gone
away.

Eudora again

2002-09-20 Thread Kevin Lock

Help please. I am using a 333 iMac with 8.6 with eudora 5.1 in sponsored mode.

I am on ADSL with a DSL300 modem connected through Enternet.
Problem is that when I check my mail I get around 20-40 seconds delay
when logging in to the pop server. Sending mail there is no delay.
I also get a short delay even off line when closing programmes etc.
This is something new and has commenced after some time on ADSL.

On the enternet side I am now having a few problems of which I am
unsure of the cause. A couple of times I could not connect and a
dialogue box told me to check settings in remote accesssure
enough my ten character password had enlarged itself to about 50
characters. Figure that one out!!???

hope someone has a couple of ideas to try.

Anthony,

My b/w G3 now and again does the same. Sits for about 30s doing nothing. Then a
hard disk starts whirring and all is well again. Luckily it only happens once
every few hours so I have learned to live with it. I suspect it may be the
clock trying to contact a time server because it never happens when I am on
line. However, I can't be bothered to check that idea fully.

Re: Switch from PC questions

2002-09-20 Thread Shay Telfer

I'm a new user of mac after more than 12 years as a PC user.
I have a flash imac which I am loving but I have a few questions.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some basic keyboard shortcuts which
are obviously different from Windows? (I know how to cut, copy and paste and
force quit!)

Well, you can either look at the menus, or a Google search reveals

amongst others.

Where do I find defrag and such like utilities?

Personally I never worry about defragging my disks. You could try
PlusOptimizer though

Can anyone recommend fax software that lets you use "distinctive ring" that
works with os x and the apple modem?

You could try FaxSTF, not sure if it supports distinctive ring though.

Is there an Australian finance software programme (suitable for small
business) that works in os x ?

I believe MYOB is the most widely used

launches the browser and then the file.
Versiontracker says there are programmes such as autorun for the windows

Any simple tricks from the multimedia experts out there? Or do I have to

You want to have a file on the 'doze CD called autorun.bat, which
will be executed when the CD is inserted if the user hasn't turned
the option off as a security precaution.

Actually, that should be autorun.inf, check out the documentation at

Sorry, I have to go and wash my keyboard out now after typing that URL.

I downloaded an updated driver yesterday for the G85 and ran it on OS
10.1.5.
Something has improved - for the first time ever I could use the scanner but
it was excruciatingly slow. As usual, I'm a bit puzzled. I scanned a
document into the computer. The size was 25mb. I left the document on the
scanner and used the email from scanner option for the same document. This
time the size was 1 mb. At some stage of my try out the computer switched to
Classic. I can't remember when.

Both sizes surprised me, but the difference in size did so even more. The
document was only one page long but had three colours on it as well as black
& white.

The e-mail option will by default scan at a lower resolution because
you really don't want to be mailing people 25Mb files.

Glad you've finally had some joy with it!

Hallelujah, a HP driver at last!

2002-09-20 Thread Michael Hawkins
You may have noticed that from time to time I've made (passing) mention of
the problems of getting my OfficeJet G85 to run.

I downloaded an updated driver yesterday for the G85 and ran it on OS
10.1.5.
Something has improved - for the first time ever I could use the scanner but
it was excruciatingly slow. As usual, I'm a bit puzzled. I scanned a

scanner and used the email from scanner option for the same document. This
time the size was 1 mb. At some stage of my try out the computer switched to
Classic. I can't remember when.

Both sizes surprised me, but the difference in size did so even more. The
document was only one page long but had three colours on it as well as black
& white.

This weekend I'll try the printer & scanner out in OS 10.2, and also see if
I can master the trick of sending a fax from the computer. The relevant
dialogue box opens up, but the send fax now button is greyed out.

I have spent so much time trying to get my PowerBook to function smoothly
and to do what I want that I now think of my PowerBook as being a
contra-productivity tool.

Does anyone else share that frustration?

Cheers,

Michael.

FileSharing and dropouts

2002-09-20 Thread Severin Crisp
I recently set up File sharing on my two machines (G4/400 and G3) and
it works a treat.
BUT I immediately started to get dropouts to the point of being
unusable at times and much slower internet performance. Turning off
FileSharing fixes it.

Is this a known phenomenon or have I uncovered a new little secret of Nature?

Not happening here. What did happen though, is that after I had checked
out the Graphite appearance, I tried to restore the Aqua colours and
everything stayed Graphite!

I went back in and changed back and forth a few times and now Aqua is
back.

I suspect the problem lies in the fact that when I first subscribed, it
was not possible to do so with an non-US address, so I, like many

Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to.

Hmm. The .Mac account I renewed and paid for was my original one that
also had some other address (Canadian, I think). I used an Amex card
and Apple had no problem grabbing the money. I wish they would respond
to .Mac support queries as efficiently.

You mean you have actually been able to get them to accept your money?
Every attempt I make tells me that my Credit Card number is
"incorrect". How the hell would they know? This message comes back
simply as part of the form validation.

I suspect the problem lies in the fact that when I first subscribed, it
was not possible to do so with an non-US address, so I, like many
others, used a fake US one. I think the problem is that my Visa card
number is not matching some algorithm they've got going which matches
names, addresses and numbers. They're convinced I live in the US and I
cannot now tell them otherwise. Nothing I do will get them to accept my
Credit Card number. There's not even an area I can find to tell them my
address has "changed". Mac support is less than helpful.
