Possible iBook Refresh Later This Week
For those about to purchase a new iBook, the website of www.thinksecret.com predicts the following later this week: The refreshed iBooks will reportedly receive dramatic price cuts of US$200 across the entire product line, along with modest speed improvements. The entry-level model will be bumped to a 700 MHz G3, while the mid- and high-end units will clock at 800 MHz. The mid-range iBook will also pack a larger hard drive. Earlier in the week we reported that Apple would release speed bumps for both PowerBooks and iBooks in early November. Friday, we reported that Apple would roll out the new laptops November 6. The addition of Bluetooth support to the iBooks is a strong possibility, sources said earlier, but DVD-R SuperDrives will not be an option for any of the new portables. In addition, the form factor will remain unchanged. Other specifications for the refreshed iBooks were not made clear. Currently, the low-end iBook has a CD-ROM drive, while the other two models ship with CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo drives. Also, the high-end model sports a 14-inch display, as opposed to the 12.1-inch TFT comprising the lower end of the product line. Cordially, Richard Kay
Screenshot in OSX
I remember there was a question about screenshots, and just came across this Bob Grabbing a Screenshot Need to take a snapshot of your screen with Mac OS X? Apple has included a handy utility to do just that. Go to the Finder and select Applications from the Go menu. Locate the Utilities folder, open it, and launch the application called Grab. You have three options you can either take a screenshot of selection, of the entire screen, or a time-delayed shot of the entire screen. A time-delayed shot is usually the best option, since it gives you time to prepare the screen for the shot. Select Timed Screen from the Capture menu, and then click Start Timer. You now have ten seconds to organize your screen. After the screenshot is taken, youll need to return to Grab and save the image. Those of you looking for an application that can take shots of windows, menus and even short movies should consider Ambrosia Softwares Snapz Pro X. The shareware application is available for $29 ($49 with movie-making capacity) from www.ambrosiasw.com.
Winthrop Technology status Re: Fwd: For those who missed the news about Random Access
Next Byte (formally Random Access) and Winthrop Technology are now separate entities owned by different companies. For those Mac users who purchase/service through Winthrop there will be no change to the process the only difference will be that if Winthrop doesn't have goods in stock then they will not be able to access any available stock that the Next Byte has as they did with Random Access. Acourding to shop staff, as a result, Winthrop will stock a higher volume and variety of goods to cover for any past short falls. Next Byte, an eastern states reseller chain (some of you may remember the name from the ABC Buzzle documentary a while back) has taken over Random Access, the AppleCentre in Nedlands. Re: Low Cost Belkin FW 6-Port Hubs
Hello, For people who may be interested, Apple Centre on Scarborough Beach Road -should- have 2 Belkin 6 port Firewire hubs for $60, normally they are about $200-$170. Model is F5U526-SLV-AUS, these are graphite coloured and support up to 5 FW devices plugged in (and 1 connector to the computer) and come with a FW cable and power supply (for FW powered devices). Contact Chris ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or 9444-9988 if anyone's interested in picking one up (they may be able to get more than the 2, apparently). That's the AppleCentre on Scarborough Beach Road in Mt. Hawthorn, not the AppleCentre on Scarborough Beach Road next to WA Salvage :) (Who'd have thought, two AppleCentres on on the same road in Perth :) Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer It must be bunnies! Fwd: Unstable Connection OSX10.2.1
Hi people, Are there any WestNet clients using OSX10.2.1 ? You can see by the message below from Chris Thomas, that WestNet are trying to resolve my unstable connection in OSX10.2.1 If anyone else is experiencing this problem could they please let me know I will pass the information on to Chris Thomas at WestNet. How can I get Apple to respond to WestNet ??? Thanking you for any help. Regards, Ronni Begin forwarded message: From: Chris Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon Nov 4, 2002 3:11:52 PM Australia/Perth To: RONDA BROWN [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Unstable Connection OSX10.2.1 Hi Ronni, It sounds like you disconnection problems are probably not related to the information about the new additional period, discussed at the bottom of your email. The additional period should just cause problems with getting to resources, not completely drop you off-line. The fact that this issue has commenced right at the time that you upgraded, certainly indicates that it could be related to the new disconnection problems. I'm not sure where to start looking. We have a separate access server in Perth on a test number that registers a more detailed disconnection reason, which may give us some clues. But as you can sometimes be connected for hours without getting disconnected, it could be an expensive exercise from Mandurah. We'd be happy to discuss the issue with Apple if they have any ideas of the cause. I think that's probably the most direct path to an answer. We could go backwards and forwards between ourselves, you and Apple, but that is just unnecessary stress for you. If you could contact Apple and let them know that Westnet are keen to get the issue resolved, but that we need to work with Apple to get it resolved, hopefully we can take you out of the majority of the loop and get it resolved between the 2 of us. I don't suppose you know of anyone else who is with Westnet and working on OSX10.2.1? It would be handy to have a second connection to compare with. I'm using a iBook 14.1 (Iceberg) 700MHz 256MB Power PC G3 OSX10.2.1 (Jaguar). As I've said before I had a stable connection with WestNet in OSX10.1.5, using Apple Internal 56K Modem (V90), but now I'm experiencing dropouts very frequently. I've been trying to download a 30.5 MB PDF file for days now. I got to 30.1MB of it today before being disconnected. Apple are saying it is the fault of my ISP I'm not so sure about that. I feel it is to do with 'Jaguar' the information at the bottom of this email may help you come to some conclusion. You may remember we did a test back about a year ago with maintaining connection on Apple Internal 56K Modem V90 as compared to V34 in my Mandurah area. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Re: unstable connection on OSX10.2.1
I was interested to see the comments on this problem as I have just spent a long time on the phone to iiNet support trying to re-establish a broadband connection after upgrading to 10.2. iiNet so far haven't been able to help and have promised to phone me back shortly and while I was waiting I suddenly received several messages including those from Rhonda Brown. When I checked my Network preferences the IP address had changed itself allowing connection. Terry Mercer

Unstable connection on 10.2.1
My ISP (Albany Internet Services) was recently purchased by Westnet and I had a period of dropouts which was cured by limiting the modem speed to about 40k, this with 9.2.2 - all most frustrating. On installing 10.2.1 and possibly with the passage of time this is all a thing of the past and I get in at 49330k every time and can stay on for hours at a time, idle or active. Westnet have been most helpful in the changeover period, which was not seamless, but I have retained my old email and web addresses which was a real plus if a change had to happen. I am now thinking of ADSL which has a good name here in Albany, with PC users, and I note the latest MacFormat has an article on ADSL and strongly advises an ethernet connection stating categorically that USB ADSL modems give much trouble with OSX. This is in the UK, of course, and the situation may be different here. ADSL seems very attractive costwise, overall a better connection setup at less cost but as we have four phone points, my fax connection and two computers the initial, cost of routers, hubs and filters will not be negligible and I worry about whether it will really work out better or not! on 4/11/02 18:01, Shay Telfer at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'd advise against using a USB ADSL modem (or a USB ethernet adapter), it just adds another layer of complexity to your computer's networking, and that's another layer of things that can go wrong. Also, you have to rely on that particular computer being on whenever you want to use the network (assuming you've got more than one computer on your network, of course :), and the old adage of 'Routers are routers and computers are computers', ie don't rely on a computer as a router. Have fun, Shay Excellent advice. Although adding a router does add another thing that can go wrong it's usually dead easy and dirt cheap to do. As much as this is a Mac list I've found Smoothwall Linux to be an awesome product as a router/firewall. OSX can be used for this but I'd hate to see anything powerful enough to run OSX dedicated to something as mundane as being a router/firewall. With Smoothwall a Pentium 90 is the recommended minimum machine. I got mine for $25 and it already included two LAN cards. I later upgraded it to a Pentium II 266 for another $15. $40 total for a dedicated box that handles my connections both internally for the LAN and externally for the net and keeps me safe from people trying to get into my machines is one of the best purchases I've ever made. This kind of solution does require either a mutli-port ADSL modem or an Ethernet bridge or switch but the prices of these are down to under $30 for 3 and 4 port ones.

Below is a description of files located on an OS 9 Imac and Powerbook. Perhaps there is a similar file for OS10.2.1 It seems the internal modem can be a USB modem ! ? Regards Bob File attached (I found it on my iMac under Applications(Mac OS9)/Apple Extras/Internal Modem/USB AT Commands.pdf ie it came with the computer) As I typed this, I wondered if there was an equivalent on my powerbook (which isn't a USB modem) and there is (also under Applications(Mac OS9)/Apple Extras/Internal Modem), and it also includes the same commands so I've attached that also. (Don't know why the USB AT Commands shows as 83k but the AT Commands shows as 328k!) ***
