I have just lifted the moderation on your messages . It took about 15

Hi All,

I belong to a number of US lists and e-mail sent by me is usually
distributed to those list members within 10 minutes or less. Can
somebody please advise why mail, particularly mine, to this list
takes so long to be distributed?

An e-mail I sent this morning took over 3 hours and weekend mails
quite often take up to 8 hours. I have noticed that my latest mail
included "X-eGroups-Approved-By: turnor1900

Re: Palm 4/Mac 10.2

2002-11-12 Thread Shay Telfer

Since I loaded Mac 10.2 onto my new imac, and the Palm 4 upgrade I have had
trouble synching my husband's Palm. Someone suggested Isync, but that did
not work (would not update, and lost a lot of data).

Two things happen
1) the desktop software won't open the user files. When you shift from none
to the user name, the boxes of info appear then disappear. If I point to
open in the file menu the same thing happens. I can force it to open by
opening the archive files, but it doesn't hold.

You might need to try moving the user's data out of the way and
downloading a fresh copy. To do this, move the folder

/Users/username/Palm/Users

somewhere else, and then re-run Palm desktop. It should download
everything from your Palm onto the Mac. If that doesn't work you can
always move the folder you just moved back.

You can also try quitting Palm Desktop and deleting the file

/Users/username/Library/Preferences

(Where of course, 'username' is the appropriate username in the above examples)

Good luck,
Shay

Hi Bill & Jo & Others

there may be another option accessing GEM with a third party software
which is internet based and works with Macs as well. Shall look into
it and get back to you. By the way, Highway1, our Mac-friendly ISP
actually have something to do with the GEM setup (I do believe).

Same thing with me... Most of your problems I have had in the past and
unfortunately cannot remember the exact cure but I know it involved
making copies and deleting old files and re-entering preferences...
Can't be much help in this area I'm afraid.

One thing I have noticed is that I cannot backup using G4 Now using
10.2.2 The only thing that works is shutting down the computer
giving it a minute and re-starting it. Restarting alone does not cure
the problem for some reason. Once it has restarted I can run my Palm
backup no problem. I think that it is either Internet Connect or Print
Centre that causes the problem once it is run.

Good luck, I will be watching your responses with interest...

2) the synch doesn't verify, the log indicates "system error" and the files

What is peculiar is that the synching has worked a couple of times, but now
just refuses.

As we shifted from PCs after 12 years so that my husband would find using a
computer easier, I would really like an answer. (He had no trouble synching
with Windows!)

LOL, Trust me, you'd never even know it had happened unless I was to tell

You'll note that I don't specifically say Macintosh anywhere here,
because the problem is more widespread than that. There are many more
options available beyond Microsoft, and Macintosh is only one of those.
If institutions stayed with the open standards the rest of us use, more
people would be able to use computers - which in my opinion is what it's
all about.

What do you think of this?

I know when I was at Linux.conf.au in 2001 there was a petition for
Linux users to sign to encourage the Australian Tax Office to provide
open standards versions of their software.

I think it would probably be a good idea to join forces with the
Linux crowd and push open solutions. After all, we taxpayers
shouldn't be doing more to help Bill Gates out than we can avoid!

WAMUG Lobby [Was: Re: GEM Tendering]

2002-11-12 Thread Onno Benschop
Over a period of several years I have noticed that there are several -
some would say "more and more" - organisations who think that supporting
end-users is covered by only supporting Microsoft software. Some
organisations go as far as actively excluding anything that is not
Microsoft.

As a group of users WAMUG has enough members to actually contact
organisations who refuse to support anything that is not Microsoft.

It is my opinion that there would be great benefit in organizing
ourselves by identifying those institutions who refuse outright or
support poorly anything that is not Microsoft.

As individuals we can each then approach the "offender" and as a group
we could send a clear message. I suspect that if we asked Apple to
support us, we'd have even more impact. There are other user-groups who
we may wish to invite to join in this effort.

You'll note that I don't specifically say Macintosh anywhere here,
because the problem is more widespread than that. There are many more
options available beyond Microsoft, and Macintosh is only one of those.

The form bounced back so I investigated and found..

"Hardware Requirements

Macintosh and other Platforms
Gem has not been tested with on Apple Macintosh and other systems.

This does not preclude operation using Macintosh system (or any other
system), however the Department of Industry and Technology (DoIT) is unable
to make any assurances that Gem? will operate on such systems.

DoIT will not make any commitment to fix any problems identified when using
Gem on these platforms."

Now I find this appalling considering that MACs account for what -? -10% of
the market and certainly all the graphic designers and many writers I know
use MACS.

Does anyone have any smart ideas on how to deal with this? I am using a
G3/333 OS 9.2.2 Explorer 5.1.

It could be security? Or is the answer, find a PC and fill in the info on
that? Surely not!!

Consider making a complaint to the State Supply Commission. In fact
Wamug & Apple Australia should both also make formal submissions as
well on all government contracts and particularly all those lodged on
the web. Onno & others may have thoughts on this. Certainly DoIT
have control of most IT contracts for the State and manage the Spirit
