Loading Classic with 10.2

The horizontal barbers pole in the Classic window keep twirling for
minutes - last effort 7 minutes. When I clicked outside the Classic
window it disappeared and I was able to use the application.

Does the twirling barber's pole ever stop?

What's the 'Classic' window displaying? Happy Mac? Icons? A dialog?
You'll need to have the triangle in the classic startup window
'twiddled' to show what Classic's doing as it boots.

At boot up a MacOS 9.2 window appears with a smiling face momentarily
in the centre. The extensions icons then appear as loading at the
bottom of the window. When they are finished the 'twiddled' page is
blank but has a 'header' with the heading "Classic Environment
starting from "/Macintosh HD/System Folder", the pulsing (twirling?)
progress bar at the top left, an option to hide Mac OS9 desktop
window. The progress bar rapidly progresses until the last cm where
it seems to hang.

HOWEVER, last night the MacOS 9.2 window disappeared after several
minutes and the "old" Apple emblem appeared in the top left corner of
the screen. I could then access the Chooser and print a document
from my pre-10.2 version of Eudora on my old LaserWriter.

Is it possible to create a document with AppleWorks 6 in 10.2 and
then transfer it to the Classic environment for printing?

Is restarting in OS 9.2 the only solution?

Merv

I'm not sure what you are referring to here, since you've sent an email
message to the West Australian Macintosh User Group, which is as local
as you can get.

A number of Apple Centres exist around town who are able to supply and
support Macs.

There is an Apple Computer Australia office in the city which has a
small staff of dedicated individuals who work at the pointy end of sales
and support.

Finally, there is a population of IT consultants around town who provide
services including telephone and/or on-site support, training,
installation and application development.

So, what are you referring to when you say: "local group for Apple"

PS. I've sent this message directly to Greg and cc'd the list, since I'm
not sure that Greg is in fact subscribed to the WAMUG list, and I've got
better things to do than to login to yahoo and check right at this
moment...

Good Mac vs. PC Reference

2002-11-18 Thread Martin Hill
For those who haven't come across this, here is quite a good,
up-to-date Mac vs. PC site:

Quite a lot of good comparative TCO, ROI, support, environmental and
other stuff from an educational perspective (though it is all very
applicable to the business context as well).

You won't be able to do much more than export the data from the Data
Flex solution into a form readable by a Mac-based DB program. This will
depend on what export facilities are provided by Data Flex. Exporting
directly to Excel (à la Access) is porbably best id possible, but if
not, try DBF if available, or some kind of delimited test file as a
last resort. Whatever approach you take the Data Flex solution is
basically going to have to be rebuilt from scratch in whatever
Mac-based DB solution you choose to go with, and this could turn into
serious time and money depending on the complexity of the thing.

In the long run you may well find that an investment in Virtual PC
might be more cost-effective, and just run the Data Flex thing as is.
