networking query
merry christmas to all, I have a networking problem that some of the experts may be able to help me with • I have a PB OS 9.2.2 on ethernet connected successfully to an ISP via ADSL modem router • I also have a 7600 OS 8.5 with an extra ethernet card in it. I normally have connected to 7600 via standard ethernet port with my PB to transfer files and print but now unable to do so. Also the 7600 has been connected to the ADSL modem/router via hub through the additional ethernet card. At present unable to connect to ISP with the 7600 and unable to get the other port connected for file sharing using apple share which we have previously been able to do. As Spike milligan would say hlllp TIA John
[beware] iPod and 10.2.3: a solvable issue
Hi All: Just thought I would share a recent experience which would be beneficial to others. After updating to 10.2.3, I found that iTunes 3.0.1 would no longer recognise my iPod--and I therefore could no longer sync music. The iPod was showing up on my desktop, so I knew it wasn't a firewire problem. I tried many things to no avail. I then rang apple support and they helped me through it. The issue: 10.2.3 comes with new iPod software which must be installed on your iPod for it to sync. If you have the same problem as me, the issue is that iTunes needs to prompt you to install the new software onto your iPod. The cure: (as it worked for me) - Make sure you have all software updates - Disconnect your iPod - Reset your iPod by pressing the play and menu buttons simultaneously until you see the apple logo in the screen - Restart your computer - Open iTunes - Connect your iPod You should now be prompted to install the new iPod software, do so and it should work fine. Internet 56k speeds
I'm sure there's been something about this in the past but I haven't been able to find it (sorry about that). I've noticed that I don't seem to be getting the same download rates that I used to get. I used to get about 4.8kb/sec and now I get about 3.8kb/sec. I also noticed that I don't seem to be able to get a connection above 4 bps very often (sometime get 42667). I used to get connected at 46667 or 48000. I'm pretty sure it's not the ISP's fault. Does anyone know what might be causing this and is there any way of correcting this problem. Running 10.2.3 on G4-400 ISP - Dodo Using standard Internet Connect Thanks for help Ruben A. Franke
Re: Internet 56k speeds
Hi all, btw...I don't know how to tell my connection speed any more under OS X.2. It used to appear in the message box while connecting...now it's just a dialling...connecting...time online...scroll in the menubar... How's it done now? Cheers, Kevin Phyland.

Connection speeds, ie the 40,xxx sort, are mainly determined by the quality of your phone line. Things like static and interference can cause problems. This can be caused by problems with your phone cable, ie the one which goes from your Mac to the wall socket. If you are going through a long extension cable, or your cable is regularily bent, twisted, trod on, or rolled over, then damage can occur, and your connection speed will suffer. Also, try unplugging all other devices, ie phones, faxes on that line, and see if it makes any difference. It can also be affected by problems with the copper which runs from your house, out to the street and beyond. This can be tested by either trying a different phone line in the house, if you have one, or getting your Phone provider to do a line check (results from this may vary, depending on the operator you speak to. Don't believe them if they suggest joining Bigpond will magically solve everything...) If you Mac is somewhat portable, take it over to a someone elses house who is able to connect at good speeds, plug it in, dial up, and see what you get. Basically what I'm saying, is that it is a process of elimination. Download speeds, ie the 4.5kb/s ones, are determined upon your connection speed, and also how congested the ISP's bandwidth is, and which site you are downloading from. Re: Internet 56k speeds
If you click on the Dialup icon in the menu bar, choose Open Internet Connect, you should be able to see your connection speed in there. Spammer Info
Hiya all, Something I just saw on another email list. The amount of equipment and infrastructure that goes into these activities sure is amazing. Does anyone on here know anything more about Wayne Mansfield, the Perth spammer? Rgds, Phil I just stumbled across an article from a few weeks ago that's absolutely brilliant! It's to do with a very successful U.S.-based spammer that has earned enough from his activities to recently build a large home for himself. The original article, by the Detroit Free Press, is here: http://www.freep.com/money/tech/mwend22_20021122.htm Needless to say, SlashDot got all over this one within a matter of hours: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/22/1658256tid=111 Now - here's the good bit - another article in the Detroit Free Press, with the spammer complaining that he is now being flooded with advertising e-mail and snail mail: http://www.freep.com/money/tech/mwend6_20021206.htm (That page has two other unrelated but interesting articles on it too...) Internal Modem
Some weeks ago there was a problem identified with Apple's Internal 56k modem and Telstra internet connectivity. I can not recall the details and at that time I was not interested. But now I am. Could someone point me in the right direction for the info. I seem to remember that a firmware download was required from Apple?? I have searched the archives but could not find anything, but probably used incorrect search string. Thanks . Peter Sealy Thurgoona AUSTRALIA
