As a still (unfortunately) unemployed graduate I'll type it for $100. I
would have replied off list but I deleted the original message.

Re: Sticking cursor/E10 camera

2003-02-06 Thread Jon Davison
Thanks for all who got back to me re the sticking cursor. It's still there
me hearties. I have pulled out all USB peripherals, all SCSI cables, removed
all uneeded Exts and Prefs but still it freezes on some Apps like Pagemaker
6.5/7 and PS 7.0/6.0, OE and IE.

I removed one of the Pagemakers Apps in case it was PM7, no change. I have
cleaned and optimized with TechTools, Disk Warrior etc, still no go. I can
see no new Exts, Prefs etc, cleaned out the dust from the fan casing,
removed Iomega, trashed AppleShare Prefs (as I do everyday) so it beats me
what the hell this is?

The system has been great for over a year (Phil McG I take your point, more
later) but suddenly this.
Darren, thanks for your suggestion, yes I ditched the Kodak camera files
good and proper, but zees bleeding kerser steel it stiks matey!

So, the G4/400 needs to be upgraded anyway. Here is an offer.
I have an 18 month old Olympus E10 4Mpxl digital camera, with built in zoom
35mm to 140mm, with 200mm ext lens, plus dual slot card reader, 16Mb Smart
Media card, plus space for Flash card, boxed, CDs etc. I will throw in a
28mm ext lens that has a stripped thread as well.
The camera is great, a nice professional design and great A4 images (with
Genuine Fractals you can of course go a great deal larger than this. I will
throw in this CD as well. The system works well on the G4.

So, I am looking for $3'000 or near offer, or a swap with a newer G4, say
around dual 800Mhz - 1Ghz or more.
Any offers?

I have used this camera for my photographic books, brochures, travel guides
for Lonely Planet, slide output etc and it is great. I have just up-graded
to a Nikon D100.

Cheers for now
Jon

Can someone please advise me of the most (cost) efficient solution in
terms of scanner and software?

Ask the original authors of the document for the electronic copy :)

Or spend $100 getting a uni student to type it in for you.

Have fun,

Scanner / OCR software

2003-02-06 Thread Michael & Sue Anderson

I am considering purchasing a scanner for the following:-
100 page document (primarily text) which I need to edit for use with
another document.

In the future I may have need to scan 35mm negatives, but at this
stage not the high priority.

G4, 400 Powerbook, running System 10.2.3. I have Adobe Acrobat 5.05.

Can someone please advise me of the most (cost) efficient solution in
terms of scanner and software?

TIA
Mike Anderson

Makes it a little difficult to browse through the book before outlaying
the cash though...

Bookstores tend to be much better for that.

Safari slow launch...

2003-02-06 Thread Mark Secker
over the last couple of days I've noticed that Safari has been taking
"ages" to launch - up to 30 seconds as opposed to pretty much
"instantly" (under 2 seconds) when first installed.

cleared cache and now once again launches in under 2 seconds...

Interestingly IE is still my main browser (90%+) and is set with a
huge cache (100 meg) yet still launches in sub 3 seconds.

Me thinks Safari beta doesn't as yet automatically clear it's cache

Dell to drop the floppy

2003-02-06 Thread Shay Telfer

Getting people to part with floppy drives will take some work, Vena
admits. "Customers still have an emotional tie to floppies," he
said. "But it's an antique technology. At some point, you've got to
draw the line. You wouldn't think of using a processor from 15 years
ago."

Wow. Only 5 years behind Apple :)

Re: OS X compatible list

2003-02-06 Thread Daniel

I am still using OS 9.2.1 and am being tempted to OSX.

I have the following bits and pieces:

Epson Color 740 printer
A Brother HL 1240 Laser Printer
Canon 1240 U scanner
LaCie USB/Firewire CD burner
Imation SuperDisk

Is there a list somewhere of which of these is compatible and will work with
OSX?

Have looked on the MacFixit website but am unable to locate such a list.

Hi Lloyd (and others)

Yes they will all work.

Epson 740 - Should be preloaded but,

Brother 1240

Canon 1240U (either through Image capture or twain drivers)

LaCie Burner, will just work with Disc Burner or Toast 5.2

Imation SuperDisk, again just works.

I hope that helps!

Kind Regards

You may want to check out Apple's list of compatible printers

and scanners:

If your printer isn't listed it may be possible to print to it by
installing gimpprint

The CD Burner will probably be ok too, although it may not be
supported by Apple's burning from the Finder or iPhoto (although it
might be ok from iTunes).
