MS Word printing from emailed docs.

2003-02-22 Thread bill parker
Folks,

I have many occasions when I need to print Microsoft word documents created
on Windows machines around Aus and NZ.

The files ( sometimes very large) arrive as attachments to emails. If they
are text files with usual formatting stuff like bold, italic etc, then they
will print. If they contain embedded picture boxes in colour, the boxes
do not print. I can see all of the pics on screen BTW.

I am using OE 5.0.6, OS 9.2.2. and an Epson 670. Setting wrong somewhere?
Tried using the latest Epson update stuff - printer wouldn't work at all.

Re: Freezes (over hell)

2003-02-22 Thread Paul Weaver
Peter wrote: "I've never had this many freezes in all my life with Apple."

Well join the club Peter, I have had a huge number of freezes with my 64 MB
IMac over the past few weeks and have had no joy in solving the problem with
Conflict Catcher, Disk Doctor and Nortons. The only way I find to get out
of them is turn off the power at the wall plug. Something initially damages
the Finder, and Remote Access app usually when I am online and using
Internet Explorer 5.1.5 and I find the only solution after that has been to
do a clean install. I am now running on a bare minimum of apps and am
keeping my fingers crossed. Everything is backed up. I am running Sys 8.6
and did so for a couple of years with stacks of different apps on the
machine before these problems started. People I know with Windows based PCs
seem to not have as much trouble. My recent experience makes me think there
could be an awful lot of Macs out there that people have given up on.
Indeed when one thinks about this list there has been a huge number of
problems raised over time. Admitedly lots of solutions and suggestions are
offered too, but not always.

Hands up those whom over the years have watched demos by Mac experts at
exhibitions and WAMUG meetings where something has crashed? These are
generally received with patience and murmered understanding. We see and
accept these frustrating events as a part of life.

Perhaps part of the problem of people having so many problems began when
Apple started charging for the new operating systems it developed. Ordinary
Mac users were inhibited from upgrading because of the cost, and certainly
no guarantee of freedom from more problems. Remember the good old days when
Apple gave out Sys 7 and then its Tuneup.

Some people might say I should shell out for Sys 9 but is my 64 MB of RAM
sufficient? Is it worth the effort? Is even the much heralded Sys X
trouble free?

Recently I was also experiencing occasional zaps on the screen, but I am
happy to report these seem to have stopped - for the moment. Do I trust my
IMac? Sadly, the answer is not any more. I now have a feeling of
foreboding everytime I turn it on.

Regards, Paul.

iMac Firmware Upgrade

2003-02-22 Thread Gordon Morris

Guys
I have just wiped my brow after sweating bullets for a week after
attempting to install OSX on a 2000 iMac without updating the Firmware
first. (idiot)
When a working iMac becomes one that turns on without boot chimes, no
internal monitor and then turns itself off, I felt as sick as a parrot.
No reseting the PRAM, removing the battery, holding the programmers key
would fix it.

Hints from Rod at Apple Mt Hawthorn set me on a tortuous path.
The three necessary items - an external monitor, a HD with OS9x
installed on it and another iMac.
Basically I swapped the logic boards and OS9 HD into the working iMac -
downloaded Firmware 2.4, installed it with everything crossed put the
boards back and now everything is sweet. Thank God.

Re: Help Please - VCD Burning Problem

2003-02-22 Thread Shay Telfer

Please assist in solving this burning of VCDs problem for me.
Power Macintosh 7600/120Mac OS 9.0.4
Philips Burner CDD 2600	Toast Titanium 5.0.1 &
Update version 5.0.2

System capable of burning CDs, but not VCDs. It says: "Couldn't
complete the last command because of a Mac OS Error. Result Code=
32".

How are the VCD's being created? Disk images? Copied from another VCD?

Typically you have to create a VCD Disk image and burn that if you're
not copying from another VCD, as VCD's use different track structures
to normal CD's.

Thanks,
Shay

Scanner suggestions

2003-02-22 Thread Andrew Schox
Hi all,

I need to get a new scanner. One of the requirements is to scan x-rays.
Previously we had an old UMAX with the light box on the top (which worked
well enough), but I also want to scan photos and slides with good quality.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Andrew
