External Drive Copy Hang?

2004-01-20 Thread Antony N. Lord

The saga of resurrecting my poor Lombard continues :

* Lombard 333, 256Mb RAM, 30Gb HD, 3 partitions, fresh format and clean
10.3.2 install
* External HD (my data backup) is a 3.5" IBM DeskStar HD in a FW / USB
combo case (has been flashed to Oxford 911 firmware v3.7)

Every time I try to copy a stack of data back (from the external HD to one
of the internal drive partitions) it hangs after copying the first 120-200 Mb.

I had no difficulty in copying the data (via USB) to the external drive
before the reformat of the internal drive.

I also had no difficulty in copying the data from the external drive to a
mates G5 via FireWire in case the backup went south too!

I'm at a complete loss to explain this : it does it (hangs) with both FW or
USB and I've tried another enclosure with the same result!

Everything (hardware and HDs) check out with TechTool Pro 4.0.1

I'd really like to hear any ideas on this one as I want way data back on my
laptop!

Hi Paul,

The last few times I have turned on the computer there is a
'sign' stating the computer battery is low!
Each time I have checked that the power connecter is installed
(connected) to the computer and working (a greenish light is on).
Any explanation for this sign to keep on repeating itself (when I
turn on the computer)?

Regards,

Andy

Gilbert & Sullivan's worst nightmare?

2004-01-20 Thread Mark Secker
back when the wax cylinder was new and being heralded as the new
wonder of the world one of the duo of Gilbert and Sullivan was quoted
as (though I paraphrase due to memory lapse)
"it (the advent of recording technology)will result in the so much
bad music being preserved for all posterity"

The more times change the more they stay the same?

Time magazine puts it about Apple's GarargeBand "...to put
together a professional-sounding tune... you don't even need much
talent".

mind you to go the full hog you'll need the dosh if not the talent -
how about a full set of samples of a symphony orchestra for... $5500

We use: Applications>Utilities>Directory
Access>SMB>Configure>Workgroup

Mac to pc access isnt an issue, any share works.
The other direction was the issue.
Sharepoint did indeed sort this issue out, however...

At the time I was ready to 'map a network drive' on the pc the mac
was actually in os9 with dave 2.5 running.
Being lazy and avoiding a reboot I thought to myself that the mapping
( \\g3\audio ) would work regardless of which os the mac was in.

As dave is already sharing this directory I went ahead and mapped it.
No probs, up she came but with a twist.

When I looked at the Y 'drive' in 'My (Bill's) Computer' it was
listed as:
audio on 'Samba 2.2.3(build 26)(G3)'(Y:)

Not too unusual if osx was up but it wasnt, it was 0s9 using dave.
Not too unusual, possibly, if this drive was previously mapped to
'that' location but it NEVER had been.

The mapping does work to either macOS, using '\\server\share' sees to
that, the suprise was seeing evidence of samba while os9 was running.

I can only imagine it is that ethereal entity running on the pc
called 'MS Browse' which keeps tabs on network entities but is very
sluggish to refresh itself and will often list entities long gone
from the network.
However I draw your attention to the fact that this was the FIRST
time this drive has been accessed by the pc EVER!

Freaky!

Early in the piece (some years ago) my girlfriend called what I do
'Netwonking'.
How right she has been!

Cheers all

The To Do list can be accessed by:

1. Clicking the middle of the three buttons at the lower left border of
the main window (the one that says "Show or hide the To Do list" when
you hold your mouse over it)

2. Choosing Window > Show To Dos from the Menu

3. Pressing Option-Command T on the keyboard.

You don't really need any extra software.

BTW - iCal 1.5.2 has just been released and is available fro Software
Update. It now gives you the option of having your calendar info in a
drawer or in a separate window.

Hi muggers

I am attempting to organise my computer life better..using the i
software from apple. I have downloaded the latest ical and isync
versions. In the isync help it talks about its ability to sync address
book, calendars, bluetooth hardware and To Do lists. Now, Im probably
slightly naive here, but is the To Do lists the part of ical that pops
out, or is it yet another bit of separate software I need?

Also the people at the telstra shop tend not to advocate the bluetooth
phones...would that have something to do with their commissions rather
than the technology?

I (almost) desperately need to share my second drive containing 22g of

recommend an appletalk client for XP?

Can anyone say wether they believe this is possible or not? At least
put me out of my misery and say it CANNOT be done;o)

I've done it with 10.2.8 and Win XP home edition. Things to check for:
- Both machines must be on the same subnet mask. We manually assign an
IP address to each machine, like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, etc.
- Both machines must have the same "workgroup name". The default for
OSX is "WORKGROUP". It's easier to change the XP workgroup, than to
change the OSX one. It can be done, we used "Sharepoints" to change
the workgroup on the Mac.

- You must mark the directory on the XP box as shared.
- You must use the username and password on the XP box when connecting
from the Mac.

If you really want an Appletalk client for the PC, try PCMacLan
connect. I haven't seen it recently, but I downloaded a demo a while
ago. It's not pretty, but it works.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Paul.
