Re: wireless networking possible for these three?

 A thought from anyone knowledgeable...

Is it possible to wirelessly network a g3, and two early model 233mhz
imacs, all running 9.2?

Well, it would have been easier until Lucent EOL'd the original

Airport cards... You might still be able to purchase them somewhere...

Actually, Greg Sharp pointed out that early model 233MHz iMacs don't
have airport slots, you need at least a slot-loading iMac. So you'd
need some form of wireless access point for each iMac, or a hub
connecting both of them and a wireless access point.

no antenna on the G3 - one of the old beige boxes...

You may be able to find a PCI wireless card carrier (a normal
wireless card in a carrier that plugs into a PCI slot) that will work
under OS 8.6, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. Otherwise you'd
need to hook it up using a wireless access point, which is all
starting to get a bit expensive.

Have fun,

You don't say which G3. Some had built in Airport antennas, but would
 also need a card.

As to sharing the printer, can you currently share the printer under
9.2? If not then don't expect it to work wirelessly.

 Have fun,

Apart from the problem with original Airport Cards reaching end of line
status (though still available on eBay) I don't think old iMac 233's even
have anywhere to put them. I think this capability was added to later models
only (iMac 266's onwards). The G3 doesn't either but I think there are 3rd
party solutions available using a spare PCI slot. All up though probably
impossible to do what you want with that combination of Mac's.

Sorry to bear the bad news.

Genuine 'Postscript' Colour A3 Laser printer

2004-07-08 Thread Douglas Sheerer
Can anyone please recommend a genuine Colour A3

The slot load iMacs were the first of the series to have Airport
capabilities. I have seen USB to ethernet adapters for PCs, so maybe some
enterprising company may come up with USB to Wireless adapters in the

There are USB - Wireless adaters:

D-Link DWL-122
http://dlink.com.au/Default.aspx?ArticleID=177

Don't know price, but pretty much all wireless network hardware
companies have one...

There are also direct PCI - Wireless Adapters available:
http://dlink.com.au/default.aspx?FolderID=25

Also, for another option, you could use an ethernet - Wireless adapter...

Cheers

There already is a USB to Wireless adapter. The ones I've gotten before for
clients sell for $79. They only work in Mac OSX though.

Email me off list if you want more info.

Enjoy!!

I assume you mean that you're looking for a printer with an Adobe
PostScript 3 engine embedded, rather than a PostScript Compatible such
as those made by HP? If so, there's a world of choice out there - just
make sure you pick one with the Adobe engine. You will pay a lot for
that, though - there's a reason HP emulates it instead.

I know Ricoh use Adobe PS in their high end printers, as do Xerox, and I
expect the same is true of the lower end ones. No doubt many others do
too. HP are the main ones I know of that don't use the Adobe RIP.

It's worth noting that an Adobe PS RIP is no guarantee that the printer
will work well. Our Xerox DocuPrint 4025 has been an unending nightmare
with the macs.

There's also no substitute for going to the showroom with a laptop that
has your suite of production software installed and spending the next
two hours printing torture tests.

Midi Keyboard Advice

2004-07-08 Thread Reg Whitely

Dear WAMUGgers

I'm looking at buying a midi/USB keyboard to use with Garageband at
school, on an eMac or G4 iBook with plenty of RAM (~768). Any
suggestions for a good quality beginner instrument? One I've looked at
is the the Edirol PCR-30. Any advice for a total music mug is welcomed.

Also, who is a good supplier of this sort of equipment, preferrably
closer to Augusta WA than somewhere in the central desert?

Reg,

I have purchased the EDIROL PCR-80 which is the big brother of the PCR-30,
and I'm really happy with it. The keys have a good feel, and the unit has a
quality finish. Mind you, I've come nowhere near using its full
capabilities.
