I waited 2 days after faxing my iLife upgrade application to Apple,
then called them up. 'Got a guy named Paul, who put me through to

Cool thing number 1 - Alan knew my name, and why I was calling.
Normally when I get transferred to someone else in a large
organisation, I have to repeat the whole story.

Cool thing number 2 - Although Alan couldn't find the application
initially, he chose to seek out and find the fax, taking no more than
2-3 minutes. At no time did he blankly tell me to just 'wait and see'.

Re: Domain name registration question

2005-02-02 Thread Wez

Chuck in my 2c

I had a very cheap domain registrar in Australia (was $15 or there
abouts for a couple years i think)

They ended up going under and screwing me over rather well. After a
lot of trouble i ended up getting the domain again off the provider
they sold all their domains too and i've had way better service with
them. (boy that was painful though to start)

I think cheapest prices are down to sub $10US if you look on the web
(not .au of course as they are way dearer)

So couple things to note.

Do you need a .au? if that's what you are after
Can you afford to lose that domain name if it all goes really wrong?

And i think what you are paying for is the quality of service. A good
server where you can change domain details readily is critical.
Automated systems work fine for me.

WEZ!

probably go with recommendations i think as a best starting point

MelbourneIT are a bit like Telstra... their services aren't anything

Why would I register a domain name with Melbourne IT for $140.00 for

A lot of our clubs who have their own domain names have used very
cheap registrars and have no end of trouble with them. They can't
use the domains to their potential. In contrast, I've not had any
hassles using MelbourneIT, so I imagine that one component of the
price is "customer service". I don't have any opinion on the matter
myself, as all I do these days is renew domains that already work.

CommPost: Zytech specials

2005-02-02 Thread Zytech - your online data and technology store

Hi all!

If you missed our first newsletter of the new year - happy new year to
you all!

This year promises to be very exciting with better products, and
better value for money. If Apple's recent 'flurry' of new products to
the market is anything to go by, will all have lots of products to
contemplate buying for our work or pleasure.

Firstly, a couple of recent notices: If you have a Radeon 8500 card and
have noticed some flickering especially in small text and some
application palettes, then you can contact ATI support to see if they
can help you resolve your problem.

News from America is that in a recent poll of 200 ad executives, the
'Apple' brand ranked number one ahead of Google. No doubt the iPod has
helped in propelling them to that status.

With recent reports of data being lost from iDisk, it may be time to
start taking control of your own backups - see the following report:

And to do just that, we've broken the $300 barrier on our 200GB drives
bringing the price down to $299 while stocks last. Here's the link:

Prices have also been slashed on Elgato products, in some cases by more
than $100 - check out the details of the various units at our link:

And don't forget to pick up a pack (or 2) of 50 CD-R's going out at
$17.50 so hurry in with your order.

Congratulations to Colin from the ACT who promptly replied to our email
to claim his prize in last months monthly prize draw. The next draw
will be taking place shortly, so get your friends and family to sign up
and be part of it.

Till next time.

Yes, James has mentioned it in his email, but Onno's comment makes it
clearer that the satellite is 'in' and the phone line is 'out' and much
slower. Therefore, the dish only needs to receive.

I gather satellite in and out would cost a lot more.
