No problems with my .mac account.

I have a friend who cannot receive his .mac Email using Apple Mail and we
have tried all sorts of things to fix it (thanks Ronni!). He has resorted
to using Entourage instead as it works okay with that.

2005-02-15 Thread Adam Yap

Hey guys,

Upgrade bug has hit me again. Is anyone interested in my:

* 15" Aluminium Powerbook
* 1ghz G4 Processor
* 768MB RAM
* 60GB HDD
* Combo Drive
* Airport Extreme
* Bluetooth
* All the cables, bits, pieces and box
* Great condition, used bagged throughout it's life.

Was bought as an education product, so has 2 years of the education
warranty left. Note that I would have to claim the warranty for you if
something happened, I don't believe it's technically transferrable.
Anecdotally, quite a few friends have bought edu laptops and not had a
problem claiming the warranty.

Looking for offers north of $2000. You guys all know the prices and
current specs.

Hi

many thanks for everyone's feedback and continued reading of these
postings...

sue thanks for your points. I have just been up to the shop again. I
deleted the paired K700 device from blue tooth, and did a pairing from
the phone to the powerbook. No worries, typed in the code and there it
is on the mac, and the mac seen on the phone. Beaut. I could even send
a txt file across.

not so. I opened isync. clicked add device. Nothing. isync cant see the
phone!! Im running isync 1.5 in os 10.3.7

I tried pairing from the mac. It sees the phone again, but also the
'use isync to synchronise address book' box is greyed out again, as it
was with the motorola V620.

Should I try reinstalling isync? Should I try syncing with a cable
first?

Shay, I agree with you...sometimes the old stuff just works well
forever!!

dialogue

box ready to sync with my contacts and calendar.

So, the K700i definitely is able to work with isync.

It just didn't in that instance.

I took my Powerbook (G4 1.3 10.3.7) up to the shop so I could actually
test it with the new K700i.

Paired with the PB very quickly, but in the Bluetooth setup assistant,
has the 'use isync button' greyed out.
Sure enough when I cranked up isync and clicked 'add device' it could
not locate the K700i phone, even though it was paired.

Back to square one. Even though SE phones are supposed to use 'apple
isync' this one does not.

This is a dynamic menu that is created when you click on a file. These
apps advertise the fact that they can open certain types of files,
thus, they show up when you click on that file.

The only way to remove them from that menu is to remove the app from
the computer.

Hi all

Does OSX automatically use all hard drives attached for VM?

No, it writes the files in /var/vm, which is usually on the boot
drive unless you've gone to some efforts to put it elsewhere.

If it did could this mean some performance increases?

Marginally, as it'd reduce the delay due to waiting for the boot
drive to do other things.

I would be fairly confidently in saying that all new thumb-drives would
work fine on a Macs and Windows. It is important to have them formatted
to FAT32 file system. From what I have observed, they invariably are

Some are formatted as MS-Dos

and work equally as well on Mac

One point to watch :

Not all thumb-drives are equal when it comes to the current they draw.
Generally not a problem but some do draw more than the usual and can be
a nuisance

Hi Angus,

I purchased a Sarotech 512MB FlexDrive from Daniel Kerr last year.
It is very reliable. I've had no trouble using it on Mac or PC.
I also have a new iPod Shuffle 1GB (also purchased from Daniel... & is
cheaper than what I paid for the FlexDrive) )and it is fine on Mac &
PC.

Flex Drive is compact USB2.0 flash memory drive that can be connected
to USB2.0 port of desktop or notebook, it supports "plug & play" and
"hot swap" on both Windows and Mac, thus it is compatible with any
kinds of PC.

The USB 2.0 Flash Pen Drive can support up to 2GB disk space.
If you connect Flex Drive to USB port, your system will automatically
detect it as another removable drive. Then, you can read, write, copy,
delete and move data from your hard disk drive to Flex Drive or from
Flex Drive to your hard disk.

I would be grateful for advice regarding the use of bluetooth phones
with the mac. Does the phone need to be isync compatible for use
with the mac. ie to transfer address book and ical info to and from
the phone and to send sms etc from the mac or can this be done in
other ways for example using other software?

I have recently bought the Motorola V620 which has bluetooth etc and
am not sure if it will do the above.

 many thanks for help

 regards

Adam

This is a dynamic menu that is created when you click on a file. These
apps advertise the fact that they can open certain types of files,
thus, they show up when you click on that file.

The only way to remove them from that menu is to remove the app from
the computer.

Luckily a few apps like Toast let you turn it off in their own settings

Good Luck

Re: bluetooth phones and macs

Might need to set the first sync as computer overriding phone. This may mean
deleting and then reinstating the phone(device) in isync.

iPod battery life?

2005-02-15 Thread Ray Forma
I am wondering if my iPod will play for the whole of a flight to Europe. Model
M9282H. Using earphones with low volume.

If not, any hints about extending the battery to the max on a plane?

Re: Thumb-drives

2005-02-15 Thread gary dorn

Hiya
Can anyone recommend/ have experience of thumb-drives that will work happily
with both Mac and Windows please.
Thanks

I got one a couple of weeks ago - 128Mb from Applecentre Mt hawthorn for $35
plugged in and worked in OS 10.3.6 okay

copied over some files to transfer to my iMac ( OS 8.6) - files lost
their data fork so initially they were not openable and my software
wouldn't reckonise them.

Over came issue by opening up a similar type of file already on iMac,
which seemed to fix up files type code, then the file opened okay.

also loaded on drive some downloaded PC software to pass onto my
Intern to use on his PC laptop, all transferred over okay

Catch the 3am flight. Stay up all night packing beforehand. Have a
GnT or two when you get on the plane :) Turn the iPod on when you
wake up.

Have fun,
Shay

Hi, I've been trying to send an email to the mailing list, but kept
getting the " Mailer-Daemon "unable to deliver because of " multipart /
alternative etc " I changed my Composing prefs from Rich to Plain text,
and it came back to me, does this mean it was received by the list ?

Thanks for your help

Crossword helper ...

2005-02-15 Thread Peder Kristensen
Hi All,

For all crossword enthusiast, or cheaters, try this little gem that I picked
up from the latest issue of Inside Mac Radio. ... On your system, 10.2 and
greater I think, you have a Webster dictionary that you access via the the
Terminal app. The Webster dictionary, web2, is located in /usr/share/dict
and by using the Unix grep command you can search for a word. The grep
command structure is
grep w ³the word you looking for² /path
The "word" is made up known characters and blanks, blanks are entered as .
So here is an example:

   grep -w "ap.l." /usr/share/dict/web2

This grep search will find words that matches a patter of "ap.l." in the
Webster Dictionary, you should get an answer of: apple, apply, aptly

Have fun with your little word or crossword helper.

Cheers,
Peder

Hi,

I think what Adam meant was remove unnecessary associations between apps
and file types. I had the same problem, especially with text files, and
there is a semi-solution.

hope this helps
