You're quite right guys - I just got a little depressed after reading the
blog below which highlights how the labels could still quite easily wreck
the party by sabotaging Apple's prices. The important point as you guys
have reminded me is that if you are buying just a couple of tracks off an
album, you can't beat iTunes and it should hopefully be rare for the
purchase of a whole album on iTunes to not also be competitive.

Here's hoping the examples cited in this blog are the exception rather than
the rule.  :-)

And finding that only 3 out of 10 songs were actually worth listening to more
than once ;-)

And I don't know about others, but on the odd occassion when I have bought a
cd, the first thing I do is rip to iTunes then store the CD away. A waste in
my book! (Unlike the cool stuff you used to get in records!)

[OT] What is an ex DET Acer Travelmate 270 worth?

2005-10-25 Thread Reg Whitely

Hi WAMUGgers

[OT]
I'm hoping someone may be able to help with this query.

My son in law has been offered an ex-DET lease Acer Travelmate 270
for $750. It seems to have been well looked after.
Generally I'd say don't buy second hand, compared to what you can get
new, but I need to ask this question?

Is it worth $750?

A quick inspection suggests it is 896 Mhz Pentium R, 1.6Ghz HDD
running Win XP Home. No other software as far as I know, other than
IE and usual Windows install stuff. It doesn't seem to have CD
burning or DVD capabilities, or installed wireless - radio/infrared.

As I've had far more experience with Macs, I'm not sure what to tell
him. What is your advice?
(Don't tell me to tell him to buy a Mac. I know he should :-) but
he's a winMan. Let's leave it at that.)

Many thanks

Reg

I've complained to Team Digital where I bought my software They

Re: Problem with Software Update

2005-10-25 Thread Gordon Campbell
Oddly enough I had this problem with one of the guys I work with just
last week. I'll bet you're having problems printing too.
In my case something had happened to the permission on the /private/
tmp directory, cause Software Update and Printing and a number of
other things to be unable to write to the directory, despite
apparently having permission. From the terminal I used 'chmod -R 777 /
private/tmp' to reset all the permissions on that directory and the
problem was fixed. Note that I'm pretty sure that isn't the usual
permissions for that directory, it solved the problem, but I did have
some concerns that it might cause others.

this, to get the best out of it, I also upgrading from Jaguar to
Tiger. This then meant I needed a new driver for my scanner. I use
ScanWizard Pro (now 7.21.3).

The problem is that it doesn't seem to give me a good a colour
reproduction result as the old version of ScanWizard that I used with

I've have tried and tried to fiddle with the files in Photoshop but I
cannot pull the colour into an acceptable reproduction of my original

So how does that work with the iTMS in the US? Do purchasers find the extra
state taxes magically added to their credit card bill depending on the state
on their billing address or something?

Don't forget the tip as well - I often found myself paying almost double the
advertised price of meals in restaurants after tax and tips were added.
Very frustrating. Thanks goodness it is required here in Aus that GST be
part of the advertised price and I'm so glad tipping hasn't infected us
here. I could never help feeling like it was a bribe to get decent service.
(I know a lot of staff survive on tips, but it just doesn't feel right).

Yeah, they are showing the corporate greed rather blatantly these days
aren't they. Here's an interesting and amazingly eloquent article by
Courtney Love regarding the Music industry's exploitation of their artists:
http://www.machelpdesk.com/courtneylove.html
Here's hoping more and more sign up independently with iTMS as their label
so they get a more equitable cut of the proceeds.

So has everyone downloaded this week's free single of the week? At last we
can start accessing these even if one doesn't buy too much from the store.

$1.69 per song. Hmm, doesn't quite have the ring of 99c per song

So we have the following breakdown:

USA = 99c   (A$1.32)
Europe = 99euro  (A$1.58)
Australia = $1.69
Japan = 150 yen  (A$1.73)
UK = 79p   (A$1.87)
Japan (2nd tier) = 200 yen  (A$2.31)

So I guess we're about middle of the road.

Don't forget in the US that 99c has sales tax put on top when you
purchase (since taxes vary from state to state). I got caught out
on that on the very first item I ever bought in the US. Handed
over $20 as the item was advertised $19.99, then got stung an extra
couple of bucks at the counter!

The $1.69 was the price when the backdoor was open in April. And
no Sony/BMG artists or tv shows. Guess they just couldn't quite
get Sony over the line (here or in Japan). Let's make Sony pay for
the ignorance!

Grrr,

Yet again the record companies are annoying the hell out of everyone...

Most of the aussie artists are 'by song only' or 'partial albums'.

Grrr.

Th normal download option at

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

gives you iTunes 6.0.1. Just click the button. I know, because I had
to do this after Software Update failed to download it once again...

I must say, though, that Software Update is working for everything
else on my system, just not iTunes.
