Hi WAMUGers
I think i have to purchase a Digital Video camera for school before the end of
the year.
I have around $1300 to spend.
I have been happy with the Sony that we have had for a few years.
Canon seem very good.
The Panosonic 3CCD range sound good. Especially for indoor shooting.

Any advice would be appreciated please.

Do I still have to ensure they have firewire, dv in/out?
or is USB 2 now fastt enough?

You will not regret having Firewire. Unlike USB, it's designed from
the outset to support video. I don't think you'll find many Pro DV
cameras that offer USB2 as an option.

Address Book and Mail

2005-11-16 Thread SevCrisp
Mail seems to reference my Address Book happily and correctly except
for Company addresses. In these cases, typing the name fails to
bring up the required entry and I have to go specifically to Address
Book from the menu bar. For some, but not all such entries, the
address is remembered and comes up on later occasions. Is this a
known bug or am I missing some setting? Nothing I can see seems
relevant.

Switches are better generally but in your case it won't matter - but get a
switch anyway. You might even struggle to find a hub these days.

Neither is passive ie. Both will require power.

And 15m is just fine. Just make sure when you connect it all up that you
plug the router into the "uplink" (or similar) or MDI/MDIX port on the
switch. Some switches have a button to change between MDI/MDIX - use the
position that turns the link light on on both the switch and the router. Or
simply use a crossover cable.

Spyder problem

2005-11-16 Thread SevCrisp
I am having a problem doing a monitor calibration with my Spyder,
which I have used with no problems for many moons. Everything goes
normally until the last stage, where I am asked to save the profile.
At this point it comes up with an error

 [-48FFDO/utils.c/986]
If I "OK" the error to clear it it comes back with a message that the
calibration was completed and the profile created - but of course I
have no saved file.
ColorVision suggested a) that the Spyder must be plugged directly
into a USB port, not into a powered hub or b) that Sleep and Screen
Saver need to be set to "never". Predictably, these make no
difference, as my normal setup has worked many times in the past.
The only difference I am aware of is that this is the first
reprofiling since going up to 10.4.3 from 10.4.2. Both Optical and
Precal are at the latest versions and, apart from this one sticking
point, function perfectly.
Have any other Spyders out there anything to offer please, I am not
happy with a monitor overdue for reprofiling!

Make sure you don't get the JVC Everio(?) It's a nightmare to import
anything into iMovie (it just doesn't). Also it doesn't have firewire
(which would explain the import problem). Had to use some programme
that sounded like FFDeMux to convert the files after we (very slowly)
imported them in.

Even Pogue gave them a bad write up in the New York Times.

My Sony works fine. Firewire rocks.

Have you tried Stuffit Deluxe? A bit of a stretch, since there's
not much that SE won't open. Where did the file come from? Are you

without errors in the first place (assuming it actually is a

No I have not tried Stuffit Deluxe because it is my understanding
that the app Stuffit Expander within Stuffit Deluxe is the same as a
stand alone Expander. Wrong? I have no need to buy Stuffit deluxe as
I never stuff files and the free Stuffit Exp does the file opening
requirements I do need.

The file I am trying to obtain is the firmware upgrade 3.1.7 for my
Sipura 3000 VOIP unit. This file is a download from www.sipura.com/support/index.htm> which gives a zip file which
expands to an exe file and a .bin file. It is the latter i am trying
to open. I have no trouble opening other files with my versions of
Stuffit Expander so I assume Stuffit Exp is not the problem. Indeed
the zip file is expanded by the same Stuffit Exp. Many other folk
have downloaded, expanded and then installed that file without

I had a corrupt download but then firstly the zip file would not have
opened [which it did so] and secondly other users would have reported
the same problem [which was not the case]. I have repeated the
download from that web site several times over the last two days with
the same result.

Thus I seem to be stonewalled and I am looking for another app which
will open a .bin file.

Any further thoughts?

together. Several layers of these. Only in this part of the
presentation, and only in PAL format we are getting a "shutter" effect
(problem) happening on some of the still After Effects images. What
could be causing this problem? Some here are thinking that there
might be a compression problem causing it and that perhaps DVD Studio
Pro wouldn't have that problem. What do you all think?

Is the After Effects montage in NTSC? Remember NTSC is 29.97 frames
per second, where PAL is 25 frames per second. Might explain the
skipping.

iDVD Problems

2005-11-16 Thread info

Hi guys,

We do video production at our office here in Perth and we have been
doing some DVD production lately. We have been using iDVD to do some
simple menus and to burn the DVDs. We have been finding a problem
that occurs sometimes. We have an opener on one of our productions
that starts with a After Effects montage of still images blending
together. Several layers of these. Only in this part of the
presentation, and only in PAL format we are getting a "shutter"
effect (problem) happening on some of the still After Effects images.
What could be causing this problem? Some here are thinking that
there might be a compression problem causing it and that perhaps DVD
Studio Pro wouldn't have that problem. What do you all think?

Thanks

Absolutely. But no need for a router - a switch or a hub will do just
nicely.

But when you say long, no longer than 100m otherwise you go out of spec for
Ethernet.

Cheers

Router doubling?

2005-11-16 Thread Paul Weaver
I want to connect a Mac in a distant part of the house via ethernet to a
router which is by the main broadband-connected computer. No problems in
this.

But I would like to know if it is possible to put a second router at the end
of that single long ethernet line to accommodate another distant computer?

In other words two Macs sharing the one line to the main router.

Kind regards, Paul

CommPost: Zytech newsletter/specials

2005-11-16 Thread Greg Satti

Hi all,

Be on the look out for our congratulatory email for our October
newsletter winner - it could be you!

Well they say you should practice what you preach and its exactly this
mantra that saved me from losing my entire email data several weeks
ago. But, having said that, I still learnt a valuable lesson - here's
what happened.

Several weeks ago, I applied the Microsoft Office 2004 SP2 and things
went totally haywire with Entourage. I know there's many people out
there who don't like Entourage and while instances like this certainly
have swayed me, I still believe it to be a great all round package that
does much more that just manage mail.

Well the patch for SP2 was applied, the computer rebooted and Entourage
failed to load. I checked that the file size was below 4GB, and then
attempted the repair. After several attempts I was in panic mode, and
turned to Microsoft support for help. We copied, moved, uninstalled,
reinstalled etc etc, only to find on starting up Entourage - nothing.
Microsoft suspected that my data file had been corrupt for some time
which is why it didn't start up properly - and thats where Microsoft's
support ended. But I kept calm (OK maybe I was calmer after an hour)
and reverted back to my backup which was a few weeks old, which was
certainly better than starting from scratch. I now understand why some
of you justifiably stay clear of Entourage.

The 2 lessons I learned from this were 1. Always make extra copies of
your data before you let someone else have a play, and 2. With mission
critical data, you can never be too safe and you should not only back
up, but keep different versions as well.

Now for something new - Sharp has developed a new LCD (liquid crystal
display) panel that is capable of showing different images when viewed
from the right or left hand sides. The panels are soon to go into
production and will make possible people being able to watch different
programs simultaneously, or computer screens capable of giving battling
gamers different views of the same game.

The screen works by displaying each image in alternating columns of
pixels, which also means the resulting picture has a lower resolution.

Onto our specials - we've started selling the Harmony remote control
from Logitech. These have a RRP of $399, but we have them as an
introductory special at $288. These would make a fantastic Xmas gift
(yes it is around the corner). Heres the link:

Have you tried Stuffit Deluxe? A bit of a stretch, since there's not
much that SE won't open. Where did the file come from? Are you sure
that the file is in good condition, and that it was compressed
without errors in the first place (assuming it actually is a
compressed file)... and many other questions.

It's 'snappy'.

Notice any increase in heat coming from the faster drive?
