Re: [OT] Broken palm pilot screen

2006-07-27 Thread Paul Doyle

Hi James,

I went through a similar exercise earlier this year with my Zire 71.
Sent my palm to the specified address. They contacted me to give me the
options. Repair or replace with a second hand zire. Took about a week
and a half to turn it around. Couldn't find a local repairer. I must
admit that I didn't look too hard. I went to the Palm website and found
my repairer through them. I think they were in Sydney. I have been
really happy with the results.

I recall that the Good folk at WAMUG were generous with their advice at
the time. Dave pointed me at some excellent backup software allowing me
to backup to my SD card. All worked out really well.

Good Luck

Paul

Does anyone know a local service centre where I can get my Palm Pilot-

Also I tried to look in the archives, since I'm sure this has been

There was a server error of some description (Firefox 1.5.0.4)

I guess that's why it's a Beta :)

I find it annoying that this version has eliminated the useful
menubar iccon showing status.

Skype menu -> Preferences -> Advanced, and check the appropriate checkbox.

Take a look at the following page:

The Macintosh a.k.a. Macintosh 128K
http://www.lowendmac.com/compact/128k.shtml

Works with any system from 1.0 through 3.3

Go down the page to the link called:
Mac System 1.0 Headquarters - where you can download the original
System 1.0

(Broadband connection not required )

Any suggestions as to where the missing video has gone would be most

Note that the iSight mic only turns on when you specifically tell
iChat to use it. This is the same as Skype.

Re: Wireless Mighty Mouse

2006-07-27 Thread Tony Evers
I too had to return my first Mighty Mouse - same problem with
scrolling. Local Apple outlet T4 Technology (Albany), happily swapped
it for a new one, and this time all has been well thus far - fingers
crossed. I've adapted to the right-click so well that for a moment
wondered what you meant Paul.

A minor word of warning...

We are on our second (tailed) mighty mouse.

We had to return the first one as the track ball was driving us nuts!
It (the track ball) became very unreliable within a couple of weeks.
A quick search revealed we were not alone with this problem.
In particular ours had major issues scrolling down. The other 3
directions were unaffected.

Some quarters suggested it just needed a clean, we followed
recommended instructions but the effect was short lived, we were
soon cleaning it every day or so.

This soon became unacceptable as you can imagine.

We took it back to nextbyte where we actualy had to work on them to
be given a replacement, in fact we wanted credit to buy a M$ mouse
but they ruled this out.

The replacement *Mickey Mouse* has fared better but we have already
seen a sign of it beginning to have the scrolling issue again.
Couple this with the unique way one must perform right-clicks and this
mouse looses a little lustre in my books.

Almost $80 was a lot of money for a less-than-perfect mouse.
The trouble is; you know the bastards have you as soon as you have
scrolled sideways in the Finder while in coulumn-view, damn you
Apple! ;)

In short, when it's good, it's very very good but when it's bad
it's horrid.

Have fun
Paul

install new software. Has eventually let me repair permissions but
disk Utility returned the following messages.

Reserved fields in the catalogue record have incorrect data
Keys out of order
rebuilding catalogue B-tree
Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

It then informs me that volume could not be repaired. It will not
let me install the system and keep network preferences either.

Is all lost, or should I go out and buy diskwarrior in last ditch
effort before erasing.

My HD has 12GB free.

Before giving up completely try rebooting while holding down Command-
S. You will end up with a black screen and a flashing UNIX prompt. Type

fsck -fy

at the prompt. This sometimes does a better job than Disk Utility
(which actually uses the same routines but also has to worry about
some MacOS X overheads), and I've had it work where even Disk Warrior
has failed.

If fsck doesn't help then I think you're only moments away frpm a
(backup and) reformat.
