It's been mentioned so many times in this thread I'm surprised you
missed it. It's Keynote, of course. It's part of Apple's productivity
package called iWork, which also contains their Word Processor/DTP
program, Pages. Retail price $119, and well worth it if you wand a
"real" alternative to Powerpoint. Of course, it won't work in
Windows, so you need a Mac to run it.

Other (not-so-real) alternatives:

Apopleworks (Pressntation mode)
Preview Slideshow
Adobe Acrobat Reader
GraphicConverter
NeoOffice

and a bunch more I can't think of off the top of my head...

In addition to the suggestions already made, I can also highly
recommend the Photoshop TV Video Podcast. You can subscribe to it
from iTunes, or by visitng . Every
edition contains useful techniques demonstrated onscreen by Photoshop
masters. It's made to be entertaining as well as informative, so
you'll have work around the presentation style, but it's still a
valuable resource.

I've tried it in Safari and Firefox, but I don't have the time to
exhaustively test it now. Perhaps there's a browser out there that
will actually load this page properly...

Signature problem

2006-08-17 Thread Severin Crisp
For one of the bodies of which I am secretary I use an email
signature with a coloured logo. Most recipients have no problem but
some report an "attachment" which fills the screen with garbage!
These are Windows users but I have no other details. Mail Help does
not seem to comment on this issue. Should the logo be as a bitmap or
as a JPEG? It is presized.

Any comments welcome.

Translators

2006-08-17 Thread Dick Anderson
I have one of the first iMacs, OS 8.6, I think about 2000 and am thinking of
upgrading to a new one.
The only serious problem I've had until recently has been getting Microsoft
e-mail attachments which I can't open in Appleworks. Using Maclink plus
sometimes works but never very well.
Presumably, if I get Microsoft Office for Mac that will be OK, but not if I
only get iWorks.
Alsp with a new Mac OSX, will documents etc I've created on my old iMac with
Appleworks and transferred to the new one automatically open when I use the
office for Works, or will I still be stuck with a translater?

Thanks,

Re: Translators

2006-08-17 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi, there shouldn't be a problem opening Word documents from any
source in Pages, Apple's present word processing programme, but you
would find it much easier to have Office 2004, which is the most
recent Microsoft version for the Mac, in terms of opening all sorts
of office documents.

There is no 'works' equivalent for Macs now, its the full version, or
stick with Apples ' iWork' package, which has two applications, Pages
and Keynote (presentation software). The iWork package is much
cheaper than buying Office, of course.

You won't need a separate translation programme in either case.

I'm not sure what will happen to your Appleworks documents -
hopefully someone else on the list can help. It might be a good idea
to translate them using Maclink plus to Office documents before
trying to use them on your new machine. Sounds like it might be an
idea to hang on to your old Mac until you are sure that everything
works on the new one.

cheers, susan.

Powerbook 17" 1.33GHz running 10.4.7 refuses to wake

2006-08-17 Thread Brett Carboni

Hi all,

when I arrive at Tsunami often my Powerbook just shows a black screen
and won't wake up or do anything.

Eventually I have to do a hard reset (control-option-on button) to
restart it.

This can't be good for it. Any suggestions?

Yes, Matt, I should have let you look at it when you were in and I
told you about it, but people come to us hopefully to escape work :-)
Of course I usually can'r stop talking about Macs but it could be
worse (you could be a Windows person berating a Mac).

Hi Brett

Did you run the 10.4.7 update from Software update, or did you download the
full Combo Update (about 160MB).

I ask, as I had a clients machine do something similar, and it was
downlaoded via Software update.

I reinstalled the full 10.4.7 Combo Update over the top, repaired the
permissions and it all appeared to be fine.

So that might be worth a go to start with. Unless it's something a bit
deeper, which sometimes can be seen from Console report that can show what
it's crashing on.

Hope that helps to start with.

Kind regards
Daniel

Wanted: G4 Mac of some sort

2006-08-17 Thread Martin Hill
Anyone wanting to sell off an old G4 Mac? My mother-in-law needs something
better than her old 450MHz G3 iMac though we don't want to spend too much.

So anyone have an old G4 iMac or G4 Mac Mini or similar they would like to
part with for an appropriate amount of cash? Or perhaps a G4 PowerMac up
around the 733-800MHz mark perhaps?

We can of course get a intel Mac Mini for $830 (educ price) so any of these
would need to be a fair bit cheaper than that to make them viable options.
We have some 17" screens she can use already if need be.

Thanks!

Apple's own Keynote... part of iWork
It is what Steve Job uses to give his keynotes ;)

I use it myself for all the presentations I give to MUGs here in
Victoria.

http://www.nicholaspyers.com/presentations/... many of them have PDF
versions of the slides I use... sure you lose some of the effects,
but you get an idea.

In particular checkout http://www.nicholaspyers.com/presentations/
20050305-iwork05/
It covers Keynote 2... and we are now up to Keynote 3... but it gives
you an idea of what Keynote can do for you... the sample file for
Keynote used just about every new feature of Keynote 2... just to
show them off.

I used PowerPoint for years... now I wouldn't touch it... Keynote is
a far better product... from ease of use to style... and it just
keeps on improving
