Re: GPS and Mac

2007-01-15 Thread Mark Heeler

Lloyd and all,

I have had a TomTom 300 for 18 months which I selected after much
research.
IMHO they have the best interface and while they weren't really Mac
friendly to
start with (applications were Windows only) they are now ! This was
a issue
when new OS software became available (there have been a number of
updates
- free - that have added features and so on) but I got around it by
manually

copying the files across (using a card reader).

There now is a program "TomTom Home" which your run on your Mac and from
that you can backup your data and upload new programs, voices and
maps etc.
It isn't the best program but it does the job... Connect via the
miniUSB port that

is the same one as in my Blackberry and Digital Camera.

Basically most of the units available use the same whereis.com AU
data and
errors in mapping will show up whatever device you use. I still
can't believe
that there is still a phantom roundabout near to Binninup (between
Bunbury
and Perth on the Old Coast Road) that is still present in the latest
TomTom

maps as well as being in the prior version and the CDROM's in both BMW
and Mercedes I had with built in systems which were inbuilt (the TomTom
is better in most respects than those very expensive options).

If you have the AU maps, you can still buy and download maps for many
places

in the world online via the store built in to TomTom Home.

eg. UK and Ireland plus major roads of Western Europe - 59.99 Euros
Detailed Western Europe (street level coverage) - 99.99 Euros
Detailed USA and Canada (street level coverage) - 99.99 Euros

Dependent on the size of the memory (and/or card) you can have all
installed and

switch between the map databases depending on where you are...

The good thing is that you can look at the maps before you go, add in
destinations
and even be able to work out roughly how long it will take you to get
from one
place to another. This is great when you arrive at a unknown airport
and

put your unit in a rentaracer and set off to places unknown !

There are also some freeware programs you can install on the TomTom
that are
quite a bit of fun to play with. One is "Tripmaster" that you can
set to log your
co-ordinates every so often and then you can import these into google
maps

so you can see where you have been !

http://www.webazar.org/tomtom/plugins.php?lang=uk

http://www.yournav.com is also good resource to check out.

Funny as it seems, the TomTom actually uses a custom version of Linux...

Hope this helps !

Regards

Mark

accounting software

2007-01-15 Thread Rosemary Horton

Firstly software has to have help files that don't assume a degree in
accountancy!

Needs to be able to:
1) Import from my bank (my copy of MYOB First edge (V1) does not
recognise the Qif files from my bank).
2) Be able to put in the "narrative"/other info from my bank ie
description etc

3) Enable easy categories to be established
4) Enable the selection of a number of entries to group change them
to categoriies

5) Able to import/export from qif, csv, xls etc if necessary
6) can work out a budget based on past spending
7) can find things easily
8) can "filter" by criteria
9) can print recognisablly
10) has subtotals

Re: Attachments go astray

2007-01-15 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Neil
Placement of the attachment is an interesting one. In Eudora when I
add an attachment an icon appears in the Header just below Bcc. My
son said he just clicks anywhere in the body of the email, above or
below the signature, and says 'attach'. Yes, the images do come up
in the email I receive as well as getting the feral files.
Other than Eudora I have only used web site mail, and those clients
all had a specific spot - usually at the bottom - for identifying the
file name being attached. I'm surprised Mail hasn't something
similar, or perhaps it has, and he has overlooked it.

There does not appear to be any preference in Mail that would affect

and do the other attachments include or exclude the file extansion ?

 x-unix-mode=0644;
 x-mac-creator=3842494D;

 Content-Disposition: inline;
 filename=MumKaye.jpg
The file located in Eudora Parts folder is, in this instance, named
 MumKaye.jpg
I am not aware of any inclusions or exclusions being applied. Where
 would he do that?

In all other cases (other senders) the extension is shown.

Re: Accounting software

2007-01-15 Thread Neil Houghton
With regards to the share trading - I've looked for several years for any
worthwhile Mac software with no joy. With regard to SMSF- I've just set up
my own this year and have the same problem.

I've looked and posted queries in forums such as this but :
A) There's not much Mac software covering these fields at all.
B) There doesn't seem to be ANYTHING worthwhile which covers the Australian
financial environment (taxes etc.)

I'm unfortunately resigned to using Windoze software & am really looking
forward to being able to upgrade to an Intel mac & finally wave goodbye to
VPC! - Unforunately, having bought one of the last G5 iMacs, I have to wait
a while before that happens :(

With regard to the SMSF - one Windoze example is
it sounds quite good and I've downloaded a 30 day trial but I haven't had
chance yet to install and try it.

Cheers

Re: Accounting software

2007-01-15 Thread Glenn Nicholas

Michael,

One of the advantages of a package like MYOB isn't so much software
related, its that its easy to find a book-keeper and/or accountant to
help you. Maybe you could consider using MYOB and getting your book-
keeper to assist with your special requirements day to day, and get
your accountant involved where necessary. With a more obscure
package, you may find you get the YOYO support option (you're-on-your-
own). Being a one man band, you would want to be careful how much
time you plan to spend on your books vs your business. A book-keeper
may cost less than your own hourly cost rate.

My personal view on application software is that a KISS based
strategy can save time/money - that is, implement software to support
the common/core functions, and leave the hard bits to a human. The
hard bits are often one-off or very complex ... and if not careful
can take longer to setup/implement/maintain the software than it does
to do it by hand. And then you need professional advice anyway
because the (super / asset / taxation etc) rules are so damn
complicated

We use MYOB for our business, with a book-keeper and accountant to
help on the hard stuff.

Anyway, your mileage may vary :)

Glenn.
