Re: Startup Message

2007-02-07 Thread Jude
Has she got Sleep X installed? It's a program that manages your macs
sleep cycles. It needs to be running at all times to do this, so it
would probably load at start up. If you did install it and trust it,
click 'fix' at this alert.

Hi,
One of the girls at work has started getting this message everytime she starts
up her MacBook and asked what should she do about it.

The message is

"An item in the startup Items Folder
(Library/StartupItems/hexSleeperX.app) does

not have the proper security setting. Closing this item may cause problems.
If you trust this item and want to fix the security settings, click Fix.
To always prevent this item from being used, click Disable.
To stop using this item and show this message again, click Decide Later.
Decide later Disable Fix"

Suggestions? Advice? I've never seen it before.

TIA

Maureen

RE: WANTED to buy: Mini-DVI to VGA adapter

2007-02-07 Thread David Moyle
Hi

We just bought a few batches of late 2006 MacBooks and Apple have stopped
supplying the video adaptor, it is now something you have to buy separately
at a cost of I believe around $50!

Great because we won't have hundreds of them, but bad because we don't have
any! The MacBook Pro's still come with one though to go from DVI to VGA.

Thanks, David Moyle

we would all
be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just

  part, esp 7th point):
  1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
  2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would
have to

  buy a new car.
  3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason.
You
would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the
windows, shut

off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could
continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
  4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would
cause
your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you
would have

  to reinstall the engine.
  5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was
reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but
would run on only

  five percent of the roads.
  6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would
all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed an Illegal
Operation"

  warning light.
  7. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying.
  8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you
out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the
door handle,

turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
  9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to
learn
how to drive all over again because none of the controls would
operate in

the same manner as the old car.
  10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.
Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate

RE: a quick question or 2 about Apples 30" monitors and G5 towers...

2007-02-07 Thread David Moyle
Hey Mark

I've been away for a long time and have no idea if you received any answers.

I don't think its more can the G5 handle it, more can the graphic card put
in the computer when originally purchased (unless upgraded later) can. I
don't think earlier G5's can handle a 30" unless they had it upped after the
newer card was released.

For a definitive answer maybe try MacTracker and see what the monitor
requires to run or ring your local AppleCentre Techie, they should be able
to give a definitive answer.

Thanks, David Moyle

Subject: a quick question or 2 about Apples 30" monitors and G5 towers...

for those lucky enough to own such beasts.

is the Apple 30" display supported by ALL of apple's G5 towers even
the lower end single processor slower bus models?

if not which G5 towers don't support the Apple 30" display?

looking at getting a cheap s/h G5 tower to bridge me over for 5 to so
months - I mean has anybody seen just how cheap they are going for
on eBay! it must break the heart of any one who bought one new :( :(
watched one of the single processor ones get passed in at $750 with
not even a single bid!!!

My G4 TiBook is starting to really showing it's age but not looking
to replace it in that form factor immediately.

Will probably salary package a MacBook Pro 15" and a Apple 30"
monitor mid year or slightly later I'll probably end up using the
30" display more with the G5 (if I get it) for assorted photo
processing tasks and beefing up the ram to handle Photoshop CS2 stuff
should give suitable performance for a couple of years to come and
use my current 20" Apple display with the MacBook Pro.

Windows/Mac issues...

2007-02-07 Thread Mark Heeler
In my office we have a server (that I own !) running Windows 2000
which I do not have any administration access (due to our inflexible
IT department).

This server runs Windows 2000 on which I have a user account that
requires changing the password every 30 days.

When I want to access the server (simply to copy data onto the
drive), I can do so with my Mac as long as I update the password
using one of the "locked down" workstations every 30 days.

The question is, is there any software that I can install on the Mac
that will enable me to change the password every 30 days without
using one of the workstations ?

I was considering buying Macs to totally replace the Windows
workstations however this appears a major hurdle. Can anybody lead me
in the right direction ?
