Router Firmware update

2007-08-16 Thread Lloyd White

I have a Belkin 4 port router and iiNet tells me I need to get the latest
firmware update. V.41

However when I download the .bin file it immediately opens to a .img file
which the router will not recognise.

The Mac man at iinet tried to do the same with same result. Apparently the
Belkin update will not work on a Mac.

Has anyone tried this or has any ideas?

Re: Router Firmware update

2007-08-16 Thread Neil Houghton
Lloyd,

The .img file is, in fact, a disk image file:

IMG files, which were used by Mac OS 9 and earlier versions of the Mac OS,
were replaced by the newer .DMG disk image format in Mac OS X.

Google gives more, eg: http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/img

So you would need to first open the .img fie (try disk utility)

Then the firmware update file should be apparent on the opened disk image
away you go (hopefully!)

Cheers

Hi Lloyd

If the router has to work with a .bin file (which it may do), then you could
try the following.
If you are using Safari, go to Preferences.
Under the general tab, untick Open safe files after downloading.
This should then just download the .bin file without turning it into an
image file, which you can then point the Belkin router to, to work with.

That should then work.

Hope that helps.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: Router Firmware update

2007-08-16 Thread Adam Hewitt
When I have downloaded similar files in the past I have found that OS X will
open the file and show the contents, but also keep the original file intact
in the place that I downloaded it to.

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried looking in the place
where you downloaded the file to see if the .bin file is still there?

Adam.

Modem fireware update

2007-08-16 Thread Lloyd White

Thanks Shay and others.

I was using Safari which gave me the .img file.

I tried with Firefox and it gave me the required .bin file which the router
recognised.

It is now upgraded and my VOIP phone is operating correctly again.

I will get back to the iiNet Mac expert and let him know.

maybe the different itunes versions is the problem?

further to all this, I discovered that the G4 had Quicktime problems,

all now works well

End of an Era

Apple has quietly discontinued AppleWorks, in the week that the company's
spreadsheet solution, Numbers, debuted in its iWork suite. The AppleWorks
website now directs users to the iWork section of the Apple site. AppleWorks
was introduced ‹ before the Macintosh ‹ in 1984 and began its long twilight
as abandonware in 1999.

ilife08

2007-08-16 Thread Severin Crisp
Having been unhappy with iMovie08 I was then stricken with the will
not export syndrome with iPhoto08.
This is well documented on MacFixit and elsewhere and is apparently
due to plugin problems with addon plugins that are brought in at
installation from the previous version. In my case a trashing of
iPhoto and an effective clean reinstallation solved the problem.
Others may have a period of tooth gnashing and head scratching so
hope this helps.
Apart from a real dumbing down of the capabilities of iMovie, which
the special download of iMovie HD for 08 takes care of, I am only
mildly enthusiastic about iLife08 - it seems pointed fair and square
at the easy canned options approach, which is fine but the more
sophisticated bits should not have been hidden in the process.

Re: ilife08 Specs

I read on the apple feedback pages that the reason for some of these
problems is that the specs for running the software is quite high and
a lot of people are using computers than don't meet the specs. Is
this correct?
