Re: Video Recorder for the Mac

2007-09-19 Thread David de la Hunty
I have an ancient (4 years old) Canon MV600i (Hi8 digital tape based)
which has been superb and works seamlessly with iMovie through a usb
cable. These days naturally hard disc recording is vogue but for what
it's worth Canon, for one, seems a compatible brand.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

In the end I got a Canon MD160 with MiniDV tape. Great little video
recorder. And it works well with the mac.

Word problem

2007-09-19 Thread Peter Bull
Hi,
I have a problem with MS Word (now there's a surprise). I have written a
training manual consisting of one section of 4 pages and the rest of the
text which is 128 pages, giving 132 as the total.
After a bit of editing the page count has increased to 134. I converted the
Word document into a PDF and there are now two blank pages in the PDF file
but they are not visible in the Word document. The PDF is used for printing
so obviously I don't want two blanks in there.

Any clues as to how I can get rid of the two "invisible" blanks?

Thanks,

VNC Clients

2007-09-19 Thread Chris Watt
Hi Guys,

I am after recommendations for a better VNC client than Chicken of the
VNC. While CotV is nice, it doesn't allow me to set what colour depth
I want, which is reallly important for me to connect to servers
world wide!

Does anyone know of something that will allow me to set colour depth
and so on as the standard RealVNC client does for windows? Preferably
free as I don't use it often enough to make it worth paying for.

Cheers!

As Susan says, there are so many brands and options that it's
difficult to make objective recommendations. Your best bet is look
through the Made4Mac lists on www.apple.com.au, and look for good
(user) reviews. I an only make one generic recommendation - avoid the
temptation to go with the DVD-recording type. Rather, look at tape or
solid state instead. The quality is better on tape, since when
recording straight to DVD the video has to be compressed. The other

Re: Webcams?

2007-09-19 Thread Antony N. Lord
With 10.4.9, Apple has included a driver for USB webcams. They must
be UVC compatible, such as the Xbox 360 camera (about $50). The
third page of the skype link has more information on which Logitech
cameras are supported under 10.4.9 without a driver.

I did find the note about UVC cameras on the Skype forums.

Interestingly many people are reporting that (for example) some
Logitech models do / don't work depending on what revision the webcam
hardware is even though they're both marked UVC on the box (and
there's no way to tell which version of the hardware it is).

I think I'll give it a punt anyway!

Cheers, Antony.

Hi Chris, that's a difficult question because it really depends on so
many factors and its sometimes best to do your own research. All of the
current video cameras are compatible with Macs if yoi have the right

Re: Ext Dual Layer DVD Burner

2007-09-19 Thread Mark Secker
actually this reminds me - as I never got to looking at this problem
earlier. are you able to watch DVD's from external DVD drives or do
they have to be a model supported by apple's standard drivers?? the
list of compatable drivers on xlr8yourmac is old and none of the
models listed were stocked anymore by PLE, Austin, Tang or Netplus.

The DVD drive on my G5 tower is playing up - reads and writes CD's
and writes to DVD, will _generally_ read a data DVD but watching a
DVD movie results in the movie freezing (this is using both Apple's
DVD player and VLC). I can rip the DVD to disk - takes a long time as
the drive is obviously doing repeated read attempts (you can hear it
shuffling the disk).

Hi Clive

Buy a pioneer drive about $55 from PLE or Netplus then buy an external case
with a firewire interface. Of course you can see Daniel Kerr and he will be
able to help.

DVR-112D. This new model supports scintillating 18x write speeds on both
DVD-R/+R media, and 10x burning on Dual/Double Layer media. Pioneer drives
remain the leaders in speed and versatility, with the facility to write
4.7GB of data to write-once media or store up to 8.5GB on Double Layer
media.

Roger
