Re: Lacie ED and Time Machine

2007-12-05 Thread Ronda Brown

Apparently the problem, according to Lacie support is that:

"If you have a edmini gigabit drive then you will not be able to use
it with time machine. The USB port on the drive is a USB network port.
Since time machine doesn't work with network drives, it will not work.
Also the format on the drive is XFS, and Apple has said that only HFS+
will work with time machine.

If you have a edmini 10/100 then the drive should show up on the
desktop when you connect to it via USB, and after running the
edmini_logon program in the drive, you will be able to use time
machine with it, if the drive has been formatted into HFS+ by you."

Is my LaCie hard disk compatible with Time Machine?

On Apple Time Machine Discussions some people suggest:
"Execute this in a Terminal window:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences
TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Launching TM prefs next time should show mounted network volumes in
the chooser after this.

Having said this, please note that as of now, TM is not officially
supported for Backups over Network Volumes."

I don't think your problem is to do with the drive formatting as
others have suggested.

I believe as a NAS device, there is some firmware that is producing
the logon message (which wont be impacted by reformatting) and I
don't think Time Machine is likely to be compatible with it. Time
machine will work with network shares provided by OSX 10.5 server,
but if it worked with the La Cie device you would be lucky indeed!

When I plug it in to the USB port, it appears in Finder and I can

After hitting a few brick walls, can anyone illuminate me:
- Can I use this disk for Time Machine?

After checking the manual and using the install CD for the disk, I
can't find any references to setting it up as a USB disk. So maybe
it only operates as a network drive.

Thanks for any assistance.

Filemaker Error 13 says that an object or file is "in use". I presume
you have tried stopping and starting Filemaker Server. Have you tried
closing the server and opening the files directly into Filemaker?
There may be some scripts not executing completely, active fields,
etc. A difficult one to solve remotely.

Hi Michael,

You cannot load the iTunes app on a HD without there being a system
installed.

You can store your iTunes Library on an External Firewire Drive. There
are of course some issues with doing this.
Particularly if you use a Laptop computer that will not always be
connected to the external drive.

Instructions for how to do this correctly are here:

Hi Severin,

If they are in the Sent Box and your Wife didn't put them there I
would say they have been sent.

When a message is sent Mail keeps a copy in the Sent Box.
They would be in the Outbox if they haven't been sent.

Go back to the place where your wife 'sent' the emails & check if you
are in range of a unprotected wireless network??

Just open the email in the Sent box, go to Message menu and 'Send

not to the list!)

Re: DVD regions

2007-12-05 Thread Mark Secker

Most (well most that I know) DVD players are actually multi region
players. BUT they hide it way, no menu or direct access and usually
different from manufacturer to manufacturer and even model to model.

For example
mine is changed by turning the unit off and then holding down the
numeric key on the remote for several seconds when you turn the unit
back on

my parent's is changed by holding down the numeric keypad on the
remote that corresponds to the region as you press the eject /close
button on the front of the player.

One of my sisters you put it in to standby and hold down the numeric
key on the remote as you take then press the standby/wake button on
the remote.

another sister's one (one of the DVD+VHS models) you hold down the
channel select button on the face when you power it up and then
select the region from a on screen menu.

if you know what model they have you should be able to google for its
multi region key combo.

alternatively use something like "Mac The Ripper"
(http://www.mactheripper.org/ )on your mac to strip the region coding
out, you can also use this to remove UOP's (The user operation
prohibition ) (where you can't forward through the opening pre menu
items) but be careful as I turned a few burnt disks in to drink
coasters where they wouldn't play in component DVD players (even
though they would play in my mac OK) when I turned off some of the
UOP.

I recently bought DVDs to send as presents to UK and I now find that
they can't be played outside Australia. I gather this is old news,
but is there any software that would let my copy DVDs and change
the region code?.
I looked for something called "Shrink" but this seems to be only for
microsoft systems.
I'm not normally into copying things, but this is different - I'd
have been happy to pay for things my friends can use.

Yes ! I agree . If Mail cannot access the server it usually tells
you . ( 10.4.8 )

Might be an idea to check with the destinations to see if they did
arrive
