Re: I deleted a Mail account - Help!

2008-02-26 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Heather,

The latest version of Data Rescue II v1.2 (11/15/2007) can recover
deleted Apple Mail EMLX files.

It's not cheap, but it is probably the best Data Recovery software for
Mac ... think I paid over $140 for it back in 2005-6.

Ronni

Have you expanded the Print Dialogue Box?
When you go to File > Print
All the settings are then under the Applications Name that you are

New MacBook and MacBook Pro - sneaky,...

2008-02-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hey all

Was just having a look at the configuration options on the new machines, and
noticed that Apple took out the Remote control for Front Row.
If you now want it with the remote, it now costs $29.
I guess not people used it perhaps?? Or a way of bringing the price down.
:o)

Just something to be aware of if you do use front row and want the remote
control.

Enjoy!

Kind Regards
Daniel

Oh, anyone interested in a just superseded top of the range MacBook Pro
2.4GHz with 4GB RAM, warranty until 11.2008. :o) I think I'll be selling
mine. Very well looked after with everything original. (those who know me
know the condition is always well looked after) :o)

Re: Comment re Office 2008

2008-02-26 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Neil

Office 2004 runs under Leopard no problems at all. I run it on a current
iMac and MacBookPro with no issues.
And yes, you are right Excel as part of Office 2008 does away with Macros.
However, when you install Office 2008 you can choose not to delete Office
2004, so this leaves you with both. Not really a solution, but at least a
bit of a work around. Then you can run things with Macros into Excel 2004
and everything else into Excel/Office 2008. That way you don't lose it.
A bit of a shame they did that, but that's what I've set up for clients that
need both. Seems to be the only way to do it at the moment.

Hope that helps a little.

Kind Regards
Daniel

One thing to shout about (and not in a good way!) is that in the new version
of Excel they have done away with macros.

I have several spreadsheets where I use macros - so if I were to update
these macros would stop working.

I have a LOT of time invested in various Excel spreadsheets that I use
constantly - so I cannot contemplate either updating Excel or changing to
Numbers (it doesn't handle Excel macros either).

The problem for me goes deeper than that - MS don't support Office/Excel
2004 for Leopard - so even though my new iMac came with a Leopard upgrade
disc, I'm still running Tiger - at the moment I'm up to my eyeballs in
accounts spreadsheets and I can't afford to find out the hard way any
incompatabilities between Excel 2004 & Leopard.

Bit of a bummer really :(

Cheers

Annual General Meeting

2008-02-26 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
The next meeting of WAMUG (4 March 2008) will be the 2008 Annual
General Meeting, when the current Committee will stand down and
nominations for new committee members will be sought.

Please be aware that Matt Healey has announced his intention NOT to re-
nominate for President and will therefore stand down.

It is very important for the continuation of WAMUG as an incorporated
body that the role of President be filled, which is also true of the
positions of Treasurer and Secretary.

If you have been thinking for some time that WAMUG needs some new
blood at the top, or that you have something to offer by way of new
ideas, or just want to become more involved, please consider
nominating for position on the Committee.

I'll take this opportunity to thank Matt very much for all his time
and effort over the past ten (!) years. He was single-handedly
responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the XServe that
has been hosting our mailing list (and web site, albeit a languishing
one - he has to eat as well after all) and has happily lead the way
with most of the demos and fielded many of the more challenging
questions at the Q&A sessions.

I'm sure his efforts have been greatly appreciated by all, and I think
we can all agree that he has well and truly served his time. Please
consider nominating either yourself or another member in time for next
Tuesday's meeting so we can continue to move forward.

I will continue to post abridged versions of this message until the
day of the AGM.

I deleted a Mail account - Help!

2008-02-26 Thread heather glass

Hi! I'm a first time poster, because I've got myself in a fix.

I deleted an account in Mail that I no longer needed, without
realising that all the inward messages associated with the account
would go with it. I have restored the last week's worth from the
server, but anything before that is gone.

Is there any way of recovering the deleted material?

Thanking you all in advance.

Regards
Heather Glass

Re: Deleting messages in Mail

2008-02-26 Thread Stephen Chape

Yep Robin,
Definitely have a Junk Mailbox.

Stephen,

Can you confirm that you actually have a junk mailbox, from your
descriptions I don't understand why the key combination and menu
item should be greyed out.
When it does work, the items disappear straight away and do not go
via the trash mailbox.

cheers,

robin

'Stephen, I think the point should be that 'Trash' and 'Junk are
separate mailboxes and there is no need to move items from the Junk

to the Trash - you move it directly (manually or using 'Rules' if
Mail hasn't already learned to recognise it) to the Junk mailbox
and dispose of it directly with Cmd+alt+J - or should be able to if
Mail is functioning correctly.

My goodness Peter !!!
I agree with you entirely
I put stuff into trash because I don't want it any.
However I have been accused by other parties (who also use this
Mac) that I am too quick to "dump" emails.

Consequently I set up my Trash to delete after 1 week.
This gives other parties the opportunity to recover anything they
may want.
I just don't want heeps of Junk mixed in with that week of deleted
mail.

Hi folks,

Is there a way of deleting messages in Mail without sending them
to the Trash ?

Once I have checked my Junk box I then delete the messages.
However I don't want them in the Trash because I keep genuine
messages there for a while.

Aghhh! At the risk of sounding unfriendly, please find another
way. Trash is for stuff you DON'T want. Find somewhere else to
keep it. If I find I have to clear up space on a client's hard
drive because there's 1500 items in Trash, I'll empty the trash.
I do not assume that there is anything valuable there. If you
have to check your Trash to see if there's anything you want to
keep, then it's not really trash. Create another folder for it;
anything. Don't put valuable stuff in Trash. This goes for Mail
as well as files.

I'll stop now. I could keep this up for hours...

Re: MacBook

2008-02-26 Thread Robert Howells
There are a number of applications that you could have set to connect
to collect images

for exampleImage Capture .

You would need to explore the possibilities and cancel the settings
in those applications ( preferences )
